My exact thoughts when I saw the picture, funny it was the hedge in the background I recognised from driving past on the way home to Charleville.

I remembered my dad back when I was a kid wanting a Kadett, he bought a Nissan Bluebird instead though.
My friends father had a navy blue 3 dr 89' Kadett. Nice car in their day!

These are the kind of stories I like. Had many good memories being a kid in Kadetts, Asconas and Omegas.

Well wear with the new motor.

Was that first picture taken in Co. Galway on the road between Screebe/Camus and Maam Cross.
Well wear in the new motor, I hope you got a good deal for repeat custom and the salesman recognised you all these years later.

Had an 88 Kadette as a company car it was brilliant. 1.6 petrol it had well over 100,000 miles on it when it was traded in. It was still knocking around the area up to about 2 years ago. The heater matrix started leaking, it was a simple slide out job to replace. Great car.

You'll find the old 89 to be alot more reliable, Modern Opels are junk, same category as Renaults and the rest of the French junk in my opinion.

Give the man his day of glory with his new car. French junk is still better than Toyota or audi in this day and age

Maybe 29 years ago when Kadett trumped them all.

A Nissan Bluebird, Jesus, the childhood memories are flooding back.

The neighbour had a 1986 saloon, great car.

I don’t care what people say, today’s cars are sh1te next to all the oldies mentioned in this thread.

Except it's fond memories through rose tinted glasses. Majority of cars were fairly wrecked by 100k miles and weren't very comfortable in reality.

I’ve fond memories of some cars mentioned here also. I remember my posh neighbours having a Bluebird. I thought it was the bees knees. Even had an electric aerial!

But let’s not get too carried away. It’s rose tinted glasses stuff. Any of us on here would be in for a serious shock to the system if you got transported back to 1989 and drove any of those cars of that era for a week. They’d feel absolutely prehistoric in every way imaginable compared to what you’re used to today.

My father had a Nissan Bluebird back in 1989. Was a 3 month old ex demo top of the range facelift model compared to your standard paddy spec cars back then. Think it was 1.8 or 2.0 litre. Had everything you needed including remote central locking which was relatively unheard of in a run of the mill car. Paint started bubbling on the doors and rust forming just below the window frames though after two years and he traded it for a Carina II not long after that.

I loved the look of the Bluebirds, I've not idea of the BHP of them, they could have been complete sheds.

I had 2 1.6 bluebirds wouldn't pull the socks off a dead man also rust buckets. The last one I had started leaking in the floor, all datsuns and nissans were rust buckets.

Was in a Kadett with 12 other passengers and a driver when I was a kid going to a match. Not a seat belt between us. Good times.

13 of ye? Ye must've been very small.

Simple reliability. No electronics, egr valves, DPFs or any of the other unreliable and expensive non sense on new cars.

We went allover the country (totally unrestrained) in one. They were part of the motoring scene, like Hyundai are today. It's a shame Opel went into such decline.

I've a Mazda 6 2007 with 300k km 180k miles on the clock and still going strong with only normal wear and tear. Newer cars have too much extras though. I saw a thread recently where a 2016 Tucson with brake assist was braking during normal driving, surely drivers don't need assistance with something that is only a tap of their foot away.

For the most part the engines were geriatric in terms of design and power except for the very rare ZX turbo version. The diesel was prehistoric but they were the Skoda Octavia of their day with taxi drivers.

We had one as a taxi in the 90's, 2.0D. 88MH717

Had more gearboxes installed than tyres and after 300k miles was traded in at the 10 year mark. Parts were expensive too (links for the back were expensive and often went for example)

Wasn't rotten from what I remember, but a dog slow car

Left the road at a sharp bridge once, I'll never forget the bang when it landed again :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,364 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

They handled like a barge so only liked straight roads. :D

I remember they were loaded up with kit when they were on their runout. Electric everything, colour coded bumpers, trim, etc. The Primera that replaced it looked very dreary in comparison.

My Dad's Nissan's bluebird didn't rust at all... It was an 87' 1.8 SLX in silver... he had the car from 1990 to 1997 and not much trouble and 100% no rust. The starter motor did go on it around 96' though but look wear and tear. Big comfy car and we loved it as kids... And there was a cool looking bonnet vent even though the car had no turbo.... However there was a turbo version.

The reg of our bluebird was 87D 14773.... Wonder is it still out there.
