Espresso option blocked off

Inspired by the other coffee thread :)

How come in so many Centras and the various Biwahoog Foods Group shops they have a coffee machine with a touch screen that used to have an option for espresso not so long ago but now it's gone?

Were they sick of people coming to the counter complaining about getting a cup that isn't even 1/4 full when they press this option by mistake?

Are they afraid some stingy person will put 12 espressos in one cup and try to pass it off at the counter as a normal coffee?

Has some marketing ninjaguru decided that Irish people only like big massive wake mugs of coffee or perhaps do they realise the inferior cheap and cheerful beans they're using wouldn't taste good without diluting them with a bucket of hot water or reconstituted milk?

Probably due to people calling it an "expresso".

    Fair enough too.

The expression "Gin ****" comes to mind and I'm sure it could be used here too...

Why is the gin button gone too?

I emailed the crowd who run these machines and found out it's people putting in an extra shot into their regular coffee who were the problem rather than ones pouring a whole load of espresso into one cup

Maybe if the steaming piss they pass off as 'coffee' wasn't so weak, people wouldn't feel the need to put an extra shot into it, tb perfectly frank and honest with you.

The only way to make an americano out of those machines decent was to remove the cup for some of the water and then put an espresso in it. Always paid for it but I presume most didn’t.

I don’t think people are always in the wrong for doing this.

I don’t take kindly to a 12oz option on the machine only filling my 12oz cup with 8/9 oz of coffee. That’s literally conning the customer.

I passed this one place on the way to work every day for a year. It was the only shop with coffee on my route. For the first 8 months it filled to 12oz exactly. Then it went much lower. I actually tested their 16oz option around then and found it would fill to where the 12oz option used to. I brought it up in conversation at the till one day and was given the stink eye. /rant

Anyways - not condoning it most of the time.

Used to work with a guy who said he would always pop two espressos into the cup and then fill with (and pay for) a Cappuccino. He did it twice a day.
His excuse was that the machine didn't fill the cup and he was just topping up the empty space he'd paid for.

    Theft, basically.

That said, for the very few people doing that and the cost of extra beans the shops must still be making serious bank on Coffee. Has to be one of the highest margin products in retail.
