New to gym. I have a few questions.

    My boyfriend and I recently joined Ben Dunne Gym. I am 162 cm and 62 kg, he is 171 cm and 72 kg. We both want to lose weight and increase our stamina and he also wants to tone up and get muscely.

    How long is too long for a novice to spend in the gym? How long do you spend on average? Do you just stay until you are tired and can't do any more?

    Is there anyone hovering around that you can ask advice for or to get a routine made for you? None of this was explained to us.

    Apart from the threadmill to burn fat and increase stamina, what specific exercises do you recommend for toning and muscle building?

    Ben Dunne gyms have staff who can provide advice on how to use the facilities. Your best bet is to get programmes drafted for you both from a personal trainer, and review your progress every few weeks. That will cover your objectives, exercises, and how long you should spend on each exercise.

    Most people spend 30 minutes to an hour in the gym, although it depends on how intensely you work out.

    But getting a programme drafted for you by a trainer is your best bet.

    I second the suggestion to book a session with a personal trainer. I'm in Ben Dunne, there's a lot of equipment and without the experience or advice you won't be able to make the most of it. A personal trainer will incorporate weight training and cardio into your routine which will get you results.

    My trainer said there's no need to be spending more than an hour working out, that more will just exhaust you too much.

    I go 3 or 4 days a week. An hour at a time. I do classes and circuit training.

    It might be an idea to do some classes just to learn some exercises and see what works.

    If you're new to the gym i really recommend that you don't go more than about 3-4 times a week and absolutely do not kill yourself at the exercise or you'll burn out and never go back. it's easy to go mad when you're starting something new but as i said it's also a good way to make sure you stop just as quickly.
    push yourself with a reasonable program (with a PT as mentioned), accept there will be pain for the first week or two with DOMS, and get into a routine.

    I reckon your best bet is about three days per week in the gym, but each involving short sessions with intense effort. Recovery from your sessions is enormously important, as is diet. Getting those two things right is vital to getting progress.

    Some people train with their trainer multiple times each week, but many others see a trainer only once every week or two and do the sessions on their own the rest of the time. It depends on your preferences and budget. Having someone to train with and encourage you makes it so much better than training on your own so if you plan to workout with your boyfriend you might need the trainer only to review progress and update your programme rather than have the trainer train you themselves.
