I find that hard to believe. Does it have keyless entry?

Not sure what keyless entry is. Why's that hard to believe? It has central locking

    What car is it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,499 ✭✭✭✭Alun

The chances that a 2014 car doesn't have remote locking are vanishingly small, pretty much zero in fact.

Why would I say it didn't have remote locking if it did?

    It's a 2014 ford fiesta

It will have remote locking, most likely keyless entry

It doesn't. That's why im here asking if it's possible to get it installed.
I've already asked the garage and they said it hasn't got it.

It does, it's standard on all spec Ford (and every other car brand world wide). It'll be built into the key

Wonder if the garage is a wee “Indy” who are saying this to avoid the hassle of repairing a broken unit.

Like others I’ve no doubt it was fitted as standard.

Sounds like the garage are fobbing you off.

To answer your question, if a car didn't have remote central locking fitted it would not make economic sense to retrofit it.
On the other hand if as suggested the system is present and not working a repair might be feasible.
Depending on the condition and price of the car it might make sense to bargain it down and fix it later.
Get a mechanic to look at the car and advise you.

(You should always get a car checked over by someone competent anyway)

    :D

Maybe they've "lost" all the remote keyfobs and only have the spare emergency key?

I've drove the car and seen the key and it's just a standard key. However I would really like to have remote locking on it for obvious reasons.
I've bought all my cars from this garage as has my family members so I don't believe they are fobbing me off.

Methinks they only have a spare key for the car, which would be a standard key. They should get you the proper key, with central locking controls, or else you should use this as a bargaining tool to get a discount.

That means they have lost or broken the original keys, this is the emergency key. I wouldn't buy it without them. They should be able to get new keys from ford with the log book.

    Stick the reg in here

and see if it's listed in the spec.I have driven a fair few 132/141 fiestas and they have all had rcl.

    I just googled this
Someone in that thread says their fiesta didn’t either.
And ford said it couldn’t be done.

If you turn the key in the drivers door lock do all other doors lock/unlock, this will indicate the car has central locking. Does the key you have say Ford on it?

Then you have some after market non original key, probably original owner lost the 2 keys and got current key as workaround. The original key would have remote central locking and be Ford branded. Original keys could be €150-€200 each.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 31,152 ✭✭✭✭KERSPLAT!

It's a spare key, the original will have the remote locking buttons on it. Tell the garage you want a key with the remote locking function, the car itself has it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,456 ✭✭✭The high horse brigade

Yes it has central locking and no the key doesn't say ford.

I have not confirmed I am taking the car yet but this has been playing on my mind before making the decision

    Walk away from it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,450 ✭✭✭LollipopJimmy

If the car has central locking then making it remote is actually easy enough but would likely require an additional fob. Anybody who installs alarms would be able to do it handy enough but it could cost somewhere between 250-500

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,249 ✭✭✭magentis

Strangely it's not showing up when I enter the reg...

I wonder is it a UK import fiesta studio?

Getting it fitted aftermarket used to be a fairly simple affair, just getting an alarm fitted that links to the central locking.I bought a 4 year old Alfa years ago and the key fob was broken,it was cheaper to get an alarm fitted linked to the central locking than buying a replacement key from Alfa Romeo.

To answer your question, yes a aftermarket remote central locking system can be installed. If it already has central locking, which it probably does its relatively simple to do, I added a system similar to this one https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UNIVERSAL-Remote-Keyless-Entry-for-car-central-lock-KE449HC/361860486961?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649 to my pajero. If it doesn't have central locking, you can get a universal system with actuators which would be a bit more work to do.

I would get the vin number off the car and call a Ford dealer.

It's a bit worrying that it doesn't have a genuine key and you get nothing from the ford etis with the reg.Did you do a history check?

Remote central locking was an optional extra on the Ford Fiesta (even in 2014). I think it was about €70 extra but you would be surprised the amount of them that came in without it being added especially if they were bought by rental companies. Pretty stingy by Ford to put it on the options list in this day and age all the same but not totally surprising with some of the odd standard specs some Ford models came with here over the years.

OP, if remote central locking is a sticking point then just move on and find a similar car with it. You could probably fit it aftermarket but it might be just easier to find one from the other hundreds of Fiestas for sale with it already. It just seems nuts to me to buy such a modern car and then having to go to the trouble of fitting aftermarket remote central locking.

To much stuff not adding up for me...I would thread carefully OP
I would definitely be looking for original key fob and not some after market fob.
Lose that key and you are looking at an expensive replacement.
Hard to believe a 2014 car could be purchased with out remote central lock but others have said it was only an optional extra...

If the dealer doesn't know that the car has remote central locking and that the key is not genuine I'd be taking my business elsewhere as they clearly don't have a clue about cars or else they do and hope you don't.

If you only have a none brand name key and you loose that it'll be an expensive job to get other keys programmed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,516 ✭✭✭XsApollo

I linked a Ford owners club forum above?
Some fiestas didn’t have remote central locking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,129 ✭✭✭✭elperello

Seeing as the car has working central locking and you are only lacking the remote feature it's not so bad as I thought before.
Given family relationship with the garage you should be able to negotiate a deal to include an extra Ford Key.
I would always be slow to walk away from a good deal on a good car over a small detail that can be resolved.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,235 ✭✭✭✭Cee-Jay-Cee

I thought all that too. But as this garage is somewhere all my family have used for years and is close by my parents house I don't think they would be trying to pull the wool over our eyes or anything. As it's a good deal in afraid to let it pass but the remote locking did seem weird to be for a 2014 car

Have you priced a similar car elsewhere? Don’t let the notion that just because all of your family have bought from this place cloud the fact that it may not be a great deal and you are probably getting the same price as a complete stranger would if they were to walk onto the forecourt.

My wife’s family thought their local garage was looking after them and bought every car (all 4 of them) from them and got tyres servicing etc etc done there too until I came along and pointed out how much they were ripping them off for everything, now they buy elsewhere and only go to the garage as a last resort.

The OP is getting a seemingly good deal because it must be a very hard sell to offload a car without remote opening. Add in a generic key fob and lots of people would be very wary.

With the car being a UK import and not having the original key then I'm guessing that it was bought through a UK auction. The car was probably a either an ex rental or ex leased car. It's not unusual for keys to be lost on ex rental/leased cars and it's also possible that the car was repossessed from the previous owner without the original key being handed back.

Theoretically it could have come with remote central locking but assuming the original remote key fob was either lost or not returned with the car, then the sellers just spent the bare minimum on a replacement ordinary spurious key without the remote fob. As said get the car's VIN (it should be a serial number displayed on the bottom right hand side of the windscreen or will be available when you do a car history check) and query it on the link already posted above or a Ford dealer to see if it originally came with remote central locking. If it did come with it then I'd be insisting on the garage getting a new remote key fob as part of any sale.

If it didn't come with remote central locking then you have to decide if you still want the car, if you do then I'd still insist on the garage selling the car to you with two keys as part of any sale. The third choice is wait for another similar car with remote central locking to become available. Don't be pressured into buying a car you are not 100% happy with for the sake of it appearing to be a great deal. There are plenty of these cars out there for sale and more than one garage offer good deals if your willing to shop around.

Ford seem to be stingy when it came to keys for the Fiesta .

Previously owned an 04 LX Fiesta that came with one remote key and one standard key .

When we got our current car (2013 Fiesta ) the base model had remote locking as an optional extra , the Zetec came with one remote key and one standard key , and the Titanium model came with two remote keys .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,364 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

If you have a car to trade in then the advertised price is nearly always not the true cost as garage advertised prices are nearly always the more attractive lower straight deal (no trade in) price. How much any garage wants with your old car for the newer car is the only figure that matters.

Have you got a cost to change price from any other garage with a similar car?

It would irritate me not having it. Do the locks only open when the key is in the drivers door? Carrying shopping and having to put it down to open the lock and then release the boot rather than clicking when approaching and opening boot/door. I think it would get annoying after a while.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 31,152 ✭✭✭✭KERSPLAT!

I wouldn't buy a car without remote locking. It's a small thing but a pain in the arse to not have it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,516 ✭✭✭XsApollo

Their are loads of Ford fiestas out there.
If anything is bothering you about the car walk away, easy find another one that will make you happy.
I wouldn’t buy one without remote locking when I could get one with remote locking.

Here’s the second one that pops up on done deal.

There might not be a keyhole in the passenger door .

On my older fiesta that came with one remote key and one normal key there was only a keyhole on the drivers side .

Same as my current car , only a keyhole on the drivers side

Out of curiosity would no remote locking be a deal breaker for others? Feels like a small thing to be bothering me this much

I've keyless entry and start. I hope to never go back to taking the key out of my pocket when getting into and starting a car.
