Hello, was bought a new phone last month and just now, ive dropped it down the toilet. Lifted it as fast i could, washed the piss of it, dried it and screen was still working. Put it on the radiator to dry but now its completely blank screen. :( Any tips on what to do, is it completely screwd or is it easy fixed?

    Rice to absorb the moisture.

Get a plastic lunchbox and fill it with rice grains.

Put the phone inside and seal the cover.

It might take a while to come alive (if it's not beyond redemption).

My wife's phone sprang back to life after 2 days. We thought it was a write-off.

    Good luck.

I was thinking maybe the radiator has damaged it aswell. Could heat effect the phone in a major way?

I'm not a scientific person unfortunately

Couscous and oatmeal are notable alternatives to rice.

It will be trial and error.

Same happened with my last phone. Got it fixed in cork. It lasted 2 years after it's bath.

Worth trying with a repair shop and see what they say.

You shouldnt have known the screen was still working, should have been too busy pulling the battery out.

Taking it out and having the patience not to try for a week is what saves you. Something few do.

Pics will be backed up to Google photos anyway so you'll have access to them there.

Thats not what I was suggesting.

Water + electronics = No Problems
Water + electronics + current = Bye Bye

The battery is what kills the important bits like the motherboard.

Get the power off and battery out asap if possible.

Then in a sealed box of something absorbent, rice, couscous, etc. And leave for 7 days.
Don't even touch it before then

I read somewhere before that if you put it in rice it will be fine. Asians will then come and fix your phone because they like rice and are good at fixing phones....seems legit!

what sort of money to fix a wter damaged phone

You don't need to take the screen off of a G5 to take out the battery. The phone opens at the back, just pop out the sim and leave the phone in rice for a week then try to power it up.

Leaving it dry out on the radiator or hotpress will just corrode and rust the board.

Sorry chief, rice works fine and doesn't clog anything, oats would as they are powdery.

Power off, Tupperware with rice for 7 days and save yourself the fee OP.

My wife did the very same thing with the very same phone about a month ago. Left it in the hotpress in a sealed bag of rice for 4 days and it worked again

Rice doesn't work. There is absolutely no proof it works. I'm taking from experience and there's many articles online saying the same. I'm not trying to scam the OP or anything but trying to offer some advice.

Have opened up phone and there's some whitish spots on it. Have disconnected the battery and the phone is in 4 parts now fully dissembled. Theres like a corroded look around some of the board. Anyone know what this is and is this a sign that its ready for the bin. Going to stick all these parts into some rice for a few days and hopefully itll start up again. Anyone know how to get rid of the corroded parts?

To me the corrosion is a result of the damage already caused when the liquid came in contact with electronics.

Does this men its finished. Is there any way of just getting all my pics/files from this phone if most of it is toast

I'd fear the worst. But it still wouldn't stop me from trying everything. I dropped a one plus 2 into a water tank in attic couple of months ago but got lucky. I opened it and only speakers were wet.

I'd also try to connect it to pc and see if it can be recognised as a USB drive. Then you might be able to copy stuff across.

A phone with sd card option should be next choice.

OP, stop fecking around with it and get it sealed in rice!

The longer it stays wet, the more chance of corrosion causing problems.

+1 for the rice... I have had 3 phones come back to life after 24hrs + in a bag of rice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 518 ✭✭✭kingbhome

Taken phone apart, brushed the corrosion off with makeup brush and have had it in rice for 24 hours. Put battery back in and screen on(not all screwed up thou) and it hasnt came back on. I had two wee vibrations but nothing came on the screen or no noise that its been powered up.

I have some distilled water in the house. Would this be ok to wash the corroded areas

24 hours is a minimum - it takes time for the moisture to be fully absorbed - leave it 48, even 72 hours if it got really badly penetrated by water.

If you can, get soke isopropyl alcohol and scrub corrosion off with a toothbrush. If you can remove the shields on the board then do that. Sometimes the capacitors and resistors are caked in corrosion.

Would a toothbrush be to course? Ive a thin makeup brush looks like it would be better.

Where would i buy that isopropyl alcohol?

What do you mean remove the sheilds? I have taken the phone apart and is in 4 parts

Every time you power back on you increase the chance of killing it.

This is why rice trick fails, people won't just wait.

    The phone.
    Screw the battery.

But you could also be shorting the battery. Though I'd rather buy a new battery than a new phone

Ive now had it disasembled for a few days in rice and now ive cleaned the corrosion from the board with nail polish remover. Back into the rice untill NYD and will check it then. If it wont come on, think ill throw it in the bin :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,060 ✭✭✭✭Thargor

Or you could do something completely mad like bring it to a phone repair shop where they fix this issue all the time? Sorry for the crazy idea, Ive had a few...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,370 ✭✭✭✭GreeBo

Is it sealed in rice or just sitting in it?

Tbh I'd say it's fecked now, too much arsing around.

Getting the water off is far more important than cleaning it, you can clean it when it's dry.
