Visiting set of Vikings in Wicklow

I tried to find a thread for the show but couldn't find a recent one.

What is the best way to get there? Is it possible to get there via public transport from Dublin?

I know if I attempted to drive there I would take a wrong route and end up in Cork, I've never driven on southern roads either apart from rural Donegal.

The place they use for the viking village is on the northern shore of Lough Tay on the R759 between Sally Gap and Roundwood. Most definitely not accessible via public transport, but easy to get to by road and you can get a great view of it from the grassy area just over the wall along the road....but be careful...it's kinda steep in places. There's a parking area opposite.
Chances are, all or most of the set has been packed away...although the last time I was there, there was one hut left! Still..worth the look just for the view. Ironic that they use a corrie lake in Wicklow as a fjord in Norway...amazing what a bit of CGI'd snow can do...

So there's no way to get there other than driving? Could you get a taxi from Bray?
I think it looks very Scandinavian regardless of the snow.

You'd need a car. You could arrange a taxi to drop you off and pick you up at an agreed time but it may be costly. Blessington Lake is accessible and also features in the show.

I'll maybe give it a try in the summer, takes 3 hours to get there, I'd want to be driving in daylight that distance, the furthest I've ever driven is 90 mins or so.

They film some of the water shots on Lough Dan. I was lucky enough to be camping there a few years ago when the where getting ready to start filming and I got a chance to see some of the long boats.
There real working long boats and some are made of wood also

There is a facebook page about those boats, Ardglass Vikings, they are made in Downpatrick, Down.

The problem with being there during filming is that you probably wouldn't be allowed to take a walk around.

Not sure about lough Tay, but do know lough Dan shore is private property and you cannot go there.

There was 3 boats there when I was there, one was irish build, it was fiberglass and the two other boats where wodden and made in europe, I think it was the czeck republic.
They weren't gonna be filming until the day after we left, but still we could see and explore the boats

You do realise there's no "set" per say that you can visit ?

It's a beautiful area but lough Tay is only visible from a steep location (it's a hell of a drop into the lake) and lough dan is not accessible without going onto private property.

There are a few spots just beyond Blessington that were used for water and battle scenes. Go to Avon Ri hotel and at the far end of the car park there's a lakeshore walk. If you go down there about 500 metres there's a path to the left which brings you down to the ruin of an old church. Ask at the hotel reception and they'll point you in the right direction. It's ten minutes walk from the bus stop in Blessington. The 65 goes there from Dublin.

This area was used quite extensively as was the lakeshore on the other side of the lake. I got to meet Travis Fimmel one day while they were shooting there. Even after a day's shoot, he couldn't have been nicer and posed for a pic with me and my nephew.

I'll have to do a bit more research on the location areas. Bus travel would be a bit of a hassle too as I would have to go back to Belfast and they only operate buses into mid-ulster up until 1am so to get to that hotel you mention would take 3 bus rides one way. Wouldn't be worth the hassle for one location so I'll have to see if the locations are close together so I could drive there.

Well I'm from down there. You'll see nothing generally. I would advise you that unless you specifically have an agreement from them to see some stuff its not worth a trip from Belfast. Lough Tay is surrounded by private land also

whomitconcerns is correct....it's not like Game of Thrones in that there are no permanent sets used... You may recognise the areas used in Lough Tay and Blessington Lake but it's unlikely there will be any sets there, unless they're shooting.

You could say that about alot of tv locations though, if you're a fan of the show its worth seeing regardless.

It's comparable to going to a football stadium when there's no game on.

I wouldn't say that, it is just good to know you've been there when you see the stadium on tv the same with a tv location.

If it's more the set stuff from the vikings you want to see instead of just the locations (which will currently have no sign at all of anything viking related), then your best bet would be to get in contact with someone in the Ashford film studio and get a guided tour (that's probably not the name of it, it's a huge film location half km north of Ashford village anyways ha). I was lucky enough to be at an event in the same venue 2 yrs ago, and manged to get a decent peek around the sets, impressive stuff!
