Dislocated knee

    Hi,
This is my second time dislocating my patella. Most braces including the one supplied by the doctor cause my leg to swell up. I saw these small patella straps online and am wondering has anyone tried them? I basically need something to hold the kneecap in place.

I wear them for running on both knees and find them brilliant. I’ve never had anything as severe as a dislocation but they help with tracking so I guess they could be good for you.

I tried a lot of different types of support without success before getting them, probably have them 3 or 4 years now so they hold up well. You don’t need to wear them overly tight either.

I have the ones from boots that you linked but there are cheaper options on amazon.

i dislocated my kneecap a few times - quite a while ago, a physio will give you exercises to strengthen the muscles around it, also if your not in a gym, join one and do weight training. Squats may be out though as they can be painful build up slowly (light weight - perfect form) though and you will get there

Were you advised to get a support for it?
What caused the dislocations in the first place?
I have patella allta (sp?) where my kneecaps sit higher than normal so that caused it to "slip" out always during some twisting or load bearing event.

I've done it a few times myself. As the poster above says get physio to focus on strengthening the area.
I'm still careful of it now, fingers crossed I've been incident free for a while.
Ran a half marathon and a decent amount of 10ks without a brace too. But everyone is different.

The squats point is right though, I can't get full depth but plenty of practice and focus on form and technique and I'm happy with the depth I get.

The first dislocation happened while playing indoor soccer, I just twisted and it popped out of place on to the outside of my leg. The second time I just slipped and it popped out the same way, this time I managed to get it back in place myself. I'm waiting on an MRI to see the exact cause. I was advised to keep a full length brace on for 6 weeks keeping the leg completely straight but this causes the knee to become very swollen and painful, it's a big relief to take it off . So i've just been doing leg lifts while sitting and it seems to be getting there slowly.I was doing a good deal of squatting, leg press work over the last couple of years and it still happened so I'm not sure what the cause is. They did mention something about the ligament on one side of the knee being stronger than the other side thus causing a pull to one side..surgery might be the answer.

Best of luck with it anyway.
Personally I've always felt better without a brace or open cap patella support. But that's just me.

I have dislocated my kneecap 4 times first one happened when I was 11 and had to stop playing sports by 16 cause my knee was too unstable. I am in my early 30s know and still get subluxations quite often.

I have been looking into successful surgery’s and MPFL reconstruction with a trochleoplasty seems to be the best option for people with multiple patella dislocations and was wondering has anyone here had a successful MPFL surgery as I can’t see anything about it in Ireland.
