Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Does anyone know when the intake to Garda College would be for this campaign as we are only at Stage 1?

Probably see the first few going in April/May and July/Aug 2019.

Not sure if it depends on the budget or not though.

The social welfare had info sessions for the this campaign and the Sgt there from Phoenix park along with the Public jobs rep said it would be September 2020.

That is so far away. I hope that isn't true. It doesn't make much sense if they want accelerated recruitment?

Perhaps they have enough decent candidates to fill the 2019 classes with 1600 people from 2017 and earlier campaigns. That's what not recruiting anyone from 2018 until 2020 would imply, no? That wouldn't actually add up, as less than half of the 5000+ that apply even make it past stage 2.

I thought it was strange. They said they were indeed still dealing with the 2013 panel (due to vetting). Some chaps on here said they had pals who got called from 2017. I don't know why they'd say that it would be Sep 2020 in an info session if it weren't true. I asked if someone did a great set of tests would they jump the queue and was told no. They'll still prioritise the previous years unless there is a vetting issue. Only then do you skip the queue.

I don't like the sound of that 2020, oh my. Here's a small piece from an article, the journal.ie that was wrote when the deadline for applications was extended. Minister Charlie Flanagan said this.

"Flanagan said successful candidates from the new campaign will be expected to enter the Garda Training College in Templemore, Co Tipperary in the second quarter of 2019."

In the Garda information booklet it said that the first people recruited would be in the first quarter of 2019. How fast you go through depends a lot on your results in stage 1, that mainly being the aptitude test. Consequently, they obviously hold quite a bit of importance. The higher your OOM the faster you will be through to the next stage.
All that being said the aptitude tests only dictate how fast you progress to the next stage, and do not mean that you will get through the rest of the stages as quick. But the people with the highest OOMs will get called to interview in September.

There are plenty of free practise aptitude exams available online if you do want to do some preparation. I'm a bit apprehensive about the aptitude exams myself as I'm quite keen to progress as quickly as possible through the stages due to the length of my current work contract.

Did anyone else go to the courses on over the past few days? Found it very good and informative myself. The tutor we had was brilliant I have to say. Thought it was money well spent.

If you ask me thats still a pretty long time, they should get their **** together, the army do the same process as well and their intake will be in September

More people go for the guards than DF, and understandably so

So we have the social welfare info sessions giving(PAS and Sgt Phoenix pk) - Sept 2020
    Minister Flanagan saying - 2nd Quarter 2019
    Students Templemore - Jan 2019
    Garda Info booklet - 1st Quarter 2019

Apologies, that was a mistake on my part. Garda info book said 2nd quarter of 2019.

How does the OOM work? Are you assigned an OOM after stage 1 results and it sticks with you for the rest of the campaign or does it change after each stage depending on your performance?

How it works is that after stage 1, if you pass you're given your OOM which is your number in line. After stage 2, that will change again depending on how you do. Stage 3 which is the interview is normally just pass or fail, and your OOM changes not on how well you do, but on how many fail the interview.

How is everybody finding the tests? Planning on doing mine tomorrow!

    Is that leaving it late?

  • Registered Users Posts: 99 ✭✭kellbag91

Stage 1 is not that bad of a test, to be honest it would take a lot to **** it up. However keep an eye on all the cut off dates for the tests, you can easily lose track and put yourself out of the running.

I understand what you mean but I did a similar process before and scored really high on the verbal and non verbal reasoning but what let me down was the sessement. For example one question was do you see yourself as been more honest than most people, to which I answered neutral as I think most people are honest, this let me down!

No you won't get that until probably the day before they are due to start on the 27th.

Lads anyone have any idea how the questionnaire is marked, I was just wondering about that.

I just completed the questionnaire. Fairly straightforward enough. Took me 40 minutes just answered each with my gut feeling think it was the best way to approach it

Tomorrow's date is the start date on it so you're probably right.

  • Registered Users Posts: 229 ✭✭vardy98

Anyone do the aptitude tests yet guys?? I'm leaving mine till the middle of the week, dreading them.

  • Registered Users Posts: 52 ✭✭LukeP26

I did part b just now. Verbal was very straight forward, especially if you've done them before. Logical was very tough though, I'd definitely recommend practicing them online, I practiced the logical at home and on a course and always got about 90% right but this one was full of tough questions I felt.

Does anyone know a good Irish course or where to learn Irish? I need to learn it for the test but all I can find is rosseta stone and 1 course in Dublin

  • Registered Users Posts: 72 ✭✭P0dr1ck

Ye verbal reasoning was pretty easy but logical was a **** to do, I completed the logical part with 3 seconds to go while on the verbal I had plenty of time left

Hi did you do the career services course? If so was the logical the same type as what they are showing examples of?

Is the Kilroy online material similar to the material that appears in this stage?

If you've been practising the logical at all, I think you'll manage these. I found them generally straightforward. I'm more confident on the logical reasoning, felt like some of the wording in the verbal was a bit tricky.

Did them an hour ago. Did not have fun. I'm normally faster at the inductive reasoning but I pretty much ran out of time and had to start guessing at the end. I had 4 minutes left in the verbal reasoning. Not expecting to get a low OOM.

I wouldn't mind once i got through to stage 2 might wait till Monday to do it haha

I think I worked it out that to pass you could get 9 wrong for the verbal and 7 wrong in the logical. I don't think I've aced it, but hopefully done enough.

Even ran out of time on last 2 questions in both. Am I only person in this boat that found them v tough? Thanks

The good thing about these tests is that they are scaled and you are compared with peers.

I think I read somewhere that the pass rate is 70%. So that would be a score of 21/30 for the verbal and 17/24 for the logical. Don't have a source for the 70%, I'm sure I read it on here somewhere, but can't remember where 🙄

Do we have to complete an Irish exam at any stage? I have my Leaving Cert and have an ordinary level B. I was always brutal at it and I would really struggle to have a conversation in it. I could probably make a good attempt at translating an Irish passage into English but absolutely not the other way around. Is the Leaving Cert taken as satisfactory competency or have we to prove it in another way?

Once you have over a D3 in ordinary level Irish your fine.

Just finished Part B there. I found both exams alright, but I normally get an average of 50-60% correct from practising! Hopefully done enough to pass anyways. Sooner we find out the better

Not sure if it's much good to anyone at this stage but Kilroy have an online course for 99 euro. You might with a push get access by late Monday if you paid online today. I suppose it'd be a way to calm the nerves before you do the aptitudes.

    I am not sure

I used the career services myself. Just the online material for 100 euro. It prepared me some what.

However, what caught me was that the practice material for the verbal reasoning supplied by the public jobs was different format to what I just done in the actual verbal reasoning test..

But sure, such is life.. I don't really know how I done.
