Unfortunately there is no way to identify a scam call number, and they can resemble a very normal, familiar, geographical or international number that we would come across on a daily basis.
    Bollocks.

A foreign premium number suddenly calling lots of Irish numbers and then hanging up after two rings with no attempt to leave voicemail and no text. What possible legit reason can there be ?
It's not accidental or wrong number if they dial lots of numbers.

Sorry Comreg & Irish mobile providers you can do a lot better.

The only reason you are getting these calls is that your phone provider gets a kickback. If it was costing them you can be sure they'd block them.

Autodialer fraud is not new. Eircom's even had a band 13 so they could charge more for these calls back in the day. The US military took over the Diego Garcia and used their own numbers. So when ringing a "Diego Garcia" number you were ringing a non-geographic number.

Worst part is how much this could cost you if you accidentally redial.

These days their Band 13 seems to be for some far flung places, including Diego Garcia. Nothing to do with the US Navy on Diego Garcia. It is not a US territory.

    Band 13:

Diego Garcia, Cook Islands, Tuvalu, Papua New Guinea, Wallis & Futuna, Kiribati, Guinea Bissau, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu

PAYG plans where the top-up is used for the offer don't allow you to ring these scam premium rate numbers. The operators are careful enough to block them when they have no way of charging their valued customers for the scams. They aren't going to let you ring up bills that they have to pay.

It would be as simple as putting in a small addition to their systems that auto blocked all international premium rate numbers or at least give callers a warning and additional confirmation before connecting the call. Of course as said the operators take a cut so are happy to allow the scammers activities.

Corporate Responsibility; what a pile of sh!t.

Install Mr. Number and batch block all numbers from Africa, Oceania, France, whatever.

    I'll rephrase it.

    You can't call Diego Garcia.

You can call a number that appears to be from Diego Garcia and pay heavily for the privilege. But ever since the US military took over and chucked the Chagossians out you can't actual call anyone* on the Island

Like their domain name .io all traffic is routed elsewhere.

    * Technically you can but you'd be dialling a US number that their military use.

To be fair a few quid on a premium rate scam is small fry compared to the disgusting way those people have been forcefully removed from their homeland and their most basic rights ignored for political and military convenience by the British and American governments.

There is something darkly funny that they have seen fit to allow the dialing code for the place be used for a cynical money grabbing scheme, irony as well as the slightest sliver of common decency is lost on those cnuts.

Off-topic I know but it does put our small telephonic problems into perspective.

Strange then that US phone users have to dial a non US country code to place a call to Diego Garcia.
