Hi 5 days ago I had an incounter with another male. I gave him unprotected oral sex but he did not cum in my mouth and said he did not precum. I have bad anxiety and am wandering what the chances are of getting hiv. I went for a test but will prove useless as I haven't waited long enough. Any help appreciated

You should be fine! Very low chance of transmission.

Very stupid of me. He said he was certain he was clean from all stds and all that but still since I've such bad anxiety it makes me very nervous. When is the right time to get an honest test done. Just to clear my head

Around 4 weeks, but you should still get tested straight away:

    https://www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/3102.aspx?CategoryID=118

You may then have another test in 4 weeks time.
Relax though, your chances of contracting the virus from that encounter is absolutely tiny.

I would still advise you to get a full sti screen on a regular basis, as anyone who is sexually active should!

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sexualy active as such the last sexual activity was 8 months ago protected. I got tested Friday nd was told results will be here Tuesday. As I taught myself the test wudnt be accurate for hiv. Wud the 4 week one be accurate?

It should be AFAIK, but I'm not an expert. Did they explain to you that you will be getting another test in a few weeks time?

No never told me to return for another test but I will have to so I can relax

And did you explain you were concerned about this recent encounter?

Yes all my gp did was test there and then and didn't mention another test

Do you have any reason to be concerned that he may have the virus despite the fact he's a sexually active homosexual male? Like has he said anything to suggest it?

OK, that is a bit odd. If I were in your position, I would contact an sti clinic and explain that you will need another test, just say what you have outlined here. They will provide a free test for you.

They will probably also provide a full sti screen as well, as there are other sti out there that are actually much more prevalent.

Anyway, in your case, the chances are really low, but I can understand your concern.

OK thank u but I'm better off waiting the 4 weeks I presume. If he wud get an stick check it wud be easier as I was the only person with him in 2 months prior to this encounter so he wud get accurate results

I would still make the appointment now. It is up to the medical people to determine how long you should wait, and provide you with a date for the upcoming test. If you put off making an appointment now, you may not follow up with the test in 4 weeks time.

Regarding your sexual partner, never rely on what people say about their status or sexual history. Your wellbeing is your responsibility. That would be my advice anyway.

I'm very sure your next test will give you the all clear.

Hi sorry again but could you tell me what tests are performed in Ireland. The one my gp did was take blood from vein and are sent off for testing.?

They will perform a blood test for the hiv antibody. If you make an appointment with a sti clinic they may also provide testing for other STIs. That's the standard approach anyway.

OK thanks as was told u could also get an antigen test or something. Booked in for first week of January so that will be 5 weeks since the incident which will hopefully be accurate

Good, five weeks will be plenty time. Not sure what the antigen test referred to, but the standard antibody test will have you covered. Best of luck!

No problem thanks a million I'd be happy with the 5 week results. Was told that it is a very low category on how it can get passed and that even tho 5 weeks will be a good indicator that a 3 month test is also suggested

Yes, that sounds like a good idea, as is regular testing anyway (every six months).

OK but over this anxiety I will not be making sexual contact unprotected nomore. But wud u consider the 5 week test good enough

5 weeks is enough. Your risk of exposure has been extremely low, so try to not be so anxious while you wait out the five weeks.

Op, The risk of getting hiv from oral sex is close to 0. The risk of getting hep B, syphilis, gonorrhea or chlamydia are a lot higher. Get the hepatitis immunisation if you didn't already get it. The rest can't be immunised against and may not show symptoms so it's nice to get tested regularly to ensure you're not going around making people sick.

Edit to add: go to a hse clinic rather than your gp. They are more experienced, free, and will give you that injection i mentioned which will save you a few quid if you're going abroad as it's a commonly recommended travel vaccine.

Best time.. if symptoms, seek attention immediately. Otherwise wait at least 2 weeks as that's when the urine test/swabs will show chlamydia and gonorrhea. Go for a followup in 3 months, when blood test would reveal syphilis, hiv, hepatitis.

Clinic is in Limerick Regional Hospital, Limerick City, 061 482 382

Is there any chance of hiv or hep showing up sooner

Sure there is. Google "sti testing windows".

If you get symptoms or did something particularly high risk you should get tested sooner. Otherwise there's little point in getting tests done frequently. A yearly test is fine for many. Quarterly testing if you have sex with strangers or have had multiple partners.

You are so low risk, but still no harm to visit the clinic regardless.

Was going to get tested on thge 5 to 6 week mark hoping I'd get an accurate result. Tbh my gp Is very professional and friendly nd has no problem doing urine tests and blood test for screening of STIs
