Tyre advice

The current Michelin Energy tyres on my car are gone to sh!te despite not being fully worn. I bought the car in June so I'm not certain how these were treated before hand but I'm getting tramlining, aqua planing, vibration, pulling and everything else that I'd expect from poor tyres.

I'm not interested in ordering online and having them delivered.

So with that in mind I did a little bit of pricing up and came up with the following:

    Goodyear @€;160 per corner
    Bridgestone Turanza @€;125 per corner
Cooper Zeon CS €120 per corner
    Matador @€;90 per corner
Some rubbish @ €85 per corner

I'm awaiting a call back on a price for Avons, Goodyears, Dungflops and Cuntinental.

Reviews on the Cooper are very positive online, Matador I've never heard of and not willing to risk it.

Bear in mind these are being fitted to a rather sedate but much driven Avensis my priority is grip, safety and comfort in that order. I don't care if they wear a bit quicker than other tyres.

Anyone care to advise, or who has had the Cooper fitted.

Mid range is as low as I'll go. I'm doing over 1200km a week on Irelands worst roads and have to arrive safe and sound for work.

What size? They seem very expensive. I paid less than 160 for top end Michelins on a hot hatch.

The size is 215/55/R17. I was thinking they were a bit pricey for tyres if I'm honest but it's the first time I'm fitting tyres on this car.

Try and get a price for hankooks and Vredesteins.

Go On to Oponeo.ie and price them up to give you an idea of what they should cost then add €15 per tyre if you're getting them in a bricks and mortar shop. If you know nothing about tyres the Oponeo website lists different tyres as being Premium, Medium or Budget.

If you do that type of mileage all the time it might be an idea to put on a winter set this time or look at Michelin Cross Climates. If you're near Dublin I'd recommend Discount Tyres In Blanchardstown.

Cheers lads. I have a bit of knowledge about the tyres but nothing to say that isn't out dated but will see my schedule for later in the week. I could be near Blanch and be able to call over.

Would you consider Michelin cross climate plus?

I'd give avons a miss. I've a set of 225/45r17 zv7's and I'm not very impressed with them at all. Shallow enough depth of thread when new, wearing pretty quickly. Wet Grip levels are adequate but not near that of the uniroyal rainsport 3's I run on the other axle. They also have more of a tendency to aquaplane.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,428 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

I have the Turanza T001 on the Golf, 225/45 R17. They hold pretty well in the wet I must say. I took a roundabout fairly quick earlier and could feel them losing grip but they really held on surprisingly.

Not sure what ratings mine are as there's several ratings for the 91W I have, anywhere between B-D.

Goodyear Efficientgrip Performance are €108/corner on Oponeo, they'd be my choice.

I like the Michelin energy’s. The ones o have have lasted ages too.

I have Avon ZZ5’s (their flagship tyre) in 225/45/18 size. They were €120 a corner. I have roughly 14k kms on them now (rotated them at 10k kms) and they should last at least the same again. They are very good tyres, excellent wet and dry grip and they’re actually a very nice looking tyre (I know that sounds silly but some tyres are downright ugly, both sidewall design and thread pattern and that would put me off a tyre - Pirelli P-Zero Nero being a prime example)

Do you know if your car can take alternative sizes?

You could have a better variety with a different tyre size

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,638 ✭✭✭zilog_jones

I've had good experience with Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance so far - probably not the most durable tyre around, but I'm happy with the grip and performance in the wet. I remember finding some fairly extensive ADAC tyre reviews (all in German, but Google Translate helped, forget where they were exactly), which suggested Michelins were generally bad in the wet.

I had ZZ5s on my 335i and they were hugely disappointing. Grip wasn't terrible but they were unbelievably noisey!

    Nankang have been recommended.

I remember having them on a car years ago and they weren't too bad.

    Any comments good or bad?

If you are happy to spend 110-125 per tyre then there's no need to buy anything other than a Bridgestone/Dunlop/GoodYear.

In a BS get the ER300 not the T001

In the Dunlop go for the Sport Maxx

In the GY go for an Eagle F1 or the Eff Grip.

Hankook would be a good cheaper choice while still getting a brand name tyre.

    Imo

I can't find them at any tyre retailer at those prices

The obvious cheap one would be 225/45 but they'd be too small. Anything similar is oddball money too IMO.

If prefer stick with the taller sidewall for comfort and because the anything small will look silly in the wheel arches

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,545 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Nah you're dead right, you'd be essentially changing the gearing of the car too.

Sometimes you can get a tyre the same radius as an oddball expensive size and keep the sidewall the same by changing the width. I don't think it's a runner here though.

Yeah I have to agree, they are quite noisy but no noisier then the Dunlop Sport 01’s they replaced.

Why not order online and pay €12-18/tyre to have them fitted at local friendly garage? Our local garage is happy to do this, he still makes his profit margin and I get exactly the tyres I want.

For what it's worth, I've tried numerous "internet praised" tyres including Nankang, Kumho & Toyos, all of which could not hold a candle to my go to tyres - Contisports or Eagle F1s. I have heard great things about the Efficientgrip but I'm year to try them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,269 ✭✭✭Stallingrad

Ditto BS ER300 being a noisy tyre. The last for ever though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,617 ✭✭✭ba_barabus

As an update I decided to live life on the edge and fit a tyre I wasn't fully familiar with. €115 per corner for Cooper Zeon XL 215/55/17. Checked a few reviews online and explained to the guy I was buying from the type of mileage I do and he was adamant they would be good and grippy.

Well good to his word I've done 1500km since Tuesday and they're proving to be great. Grip is great, I've simulated emergency stops on various road conditions including frost tonight and no issues whatsoever. Grip seems very good to me for normal use. Only issue I can tell is slightly more road noise but I'm splitting hairs highlighting that.

I'll report back over time but happy so far.

I've seen them on 4x4s before. A little digging shows they're owned by the sane company as Avon. I'm genuinely surprised by how good they are.

Hi, just wondering if anyone has any experience of tyreleader.ie? Found the tyres I want at a good price on their website but have never bought tyres online before.
My local garage will fit them for 10Euro a tyre so will save a few quid by buying them online.

I bought my last set of Goodyear Efficientgrips from them, good prices they beat Oponeo and Eiretyres on most stuff.

Was just checking out and it asked for a intra European vat number, didn't realise I needed to have one of those to buy them online!

Same as CJHaughey - got my last set from them and beat Camskill, Eiretyres, Openeo and the bricks and mortar tyre shops

You don't if you don't want to get the ex-vat prices... You probably indicated somewhere you are in the trade.

So my 2 front tyres need replacing on my accord. I'm looking at the Michelin primacy 4 and Michelin crossclimate+ 225/50/17.
They are pretty much the same price on tyreleader. Any opinions as to which I should choose?

The cost of the service was probably factored into the price of the tyres at the time. Advance rarely give anything for free, it's their business to sell stuff.

This is a cracking price for them
Hope they cost the same when I do need them

Yes there seems to be with several tyres.
I thought I priced them for my car last year and I think it was over 200 a corner.

    Although some are still costly

How many KM have you got out of them so far?

I'd say about 9k/10k km but they are the fronts on a rwd car. I put a set on the rear last March and I'd say they have about 20k km on them now and still plenty of thread left on them so I'm happy.

Being run flats they are not cheap even online but a good bit cheaper than buying local. They replaced Dunlop Sport Maxx which I found really poor especially when they got near the minimum legal thread dept.

Well the tyres cost 90 each compared to Chinese tyres costing 75 each so there isn't much room to include cost of servicing there. I do all my own servicing and if they were adding on that cost I would know.

I ran the Crossclimates in 16" on my CN2 but found they didn't like standing water much after a little wear, used to get a lot of VSA flashing.
I'd be inclined to go for Nokian Line, in fact they are top of my list atm.

Continental 195 65 r15 service was oil + filter spark plugs and check and top up fluids. They did find extra like brake pads and discs but they didn't have the parts, I did those myself.

That's mad - those exact same Dunlops in a wider tyre and a bigger dimension are €279 each on Oponeo. Why would smaller tyres be dearer?!
