Yeah, this thread is going to end well I'd say

    Maybe so.
Not a chance given the nature of the allegations and potential legal actions etc I think his career is probably finished.

    And rightly so

    I believe so yes.

He'll do his penance and return to the business.

That's providing that these allegations are all true of course. I don't like seeing people being tried in the media.

    I believe in due process.

I dunno. I think that regardless of what happens next, Al Porter and groping are inextricably linked. By the time he's decontaminated, other personalities will have stolen his lunch. In terms of radio, he was in the right place at the right time. That opportunity may be gone next time he looks

I dunno, look at that Cork wan ker (which particular one, I hear you cry). The DJ snake on a plane fella, isn't he back after doing penance for a while?

Yeah but the Cork lad had his hand on his own langer, Al "allegedly" liked to put his hand on other lads langers without asking first.

He should not have been hired in the first place

Was he not moving his hand up and down at the time,?
If it came to a choice between a moment of someone sticking their hand where I didn't want it or a plane journey of some guy next to me chocking the chicken I'd go with the moment.

Id hope so. Personally im not a fan, and what he did was in extremely poor taste, but to lose your entire career is very harsh IMO.

Personally I'd rather neither, but apparently sexual assault is not that big a deal for you.

Radio isn't his career, though. I'm sure he'll be back doing stand-up before he ever returns to radio.

Besides, the man's only 24! You can't talk about losing careers when someone is only that age. Most people only have their foot in the door at their first real job at that stage in life.

Rather big difference here. Neil Prendeville is a proven and experienced radio presenter who did something dumb when drunk but who is well able to do his show. Al Porter is an inexperienced broadcaster who was hired to work on 2FM and then Today FM almost exclusively by virtue of his fame and public standing. In spite of his altercation, Neil continues to present his show in the same professional manner that he always did, something that Al can't claim to be able to to.

Also, Al may have abused his position at the time of asking and has brought Today FM into serious disrepute.

It's unlikely another station would hire him, hes entwined in these allegations, seems an amount of it is true, in time we will hear his "side" to it, although i'm not sure what spin can be put on it really. Overall though, who would hire him? Even besides all the Sexual Assault allegations, he wasn't a strong broadcaster, he didn't seem to have a great appeal and wasn't edgy on air. Apart from the national stations that crave "Celebs" ahead of presenters who else would want to hire him? He, isn't even comparable to Hook, who despite his shortfalls, still attracts an audience because of his views. Almost everyone is replaceable, I never thought AL would stay there a long time anyway, and from what I heard of him on air, I didnt think much of his show.

As a media...person? I think he will re-appear in places, doing interviews about this period in his life, maybe one day he will pop up covering for someone on RTE, he will do some stand up, maybe acting, but never really recover from this.

On a sidenote, I wonder we will hear anything about any other radio presenters and their actions, RTE Secret Producer was hyping up some stories that never materialized.

John Leslie was never convicted of anything but his career was destroyed by allegations.

I'm not saying Leslie was completely innocent before anybody goes off on one.

If he were a better presenter maybe, but he really was atrocious, and not even close to being funny enough to make up for it.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

What about Hook, I think he will make a return. But where is the question, RTE I think not, maybe a Dublin local, FM104 Phone Show?

George Hook is 76. He can retire and take up gardening. He'll draw his pension and be grand. Porter is 24. He might have been well paid at TodayFM but not enough to retire just yet. He'll have to do something to pay for his mortgage or rent payments. I reckon first will be a book explaining his difficult upbringing, how difficult it was coming out, "maybe it was my confusion of my own sexual identity which lead to me being confused about my own boundaries. yaddah yaddah". Then one of the universities will be edgy and hire him to do a series of lectures and about 36 months from now when we've all forgotten what happened he will start to reappear.

Donald Trump had dozens of allegations made against him and he still became POTUS.

I think that says more about you than anything else. You'd rather be sexually assaulted than look away from someone interfering with them self?

This. If he was good at presenting or even funny he could potentially bounce back under the right circumstances but unfortunately for him he is neither good at presenting or in the least bit funny.

The whole story sounds strange, I mean did none of these lads not tell him to fcuk off or give him a smack? Al Porter is about as intimidating as a used teabag.

He's not in trouble for grabbing c***s though. It's specifically alleged he is in trouble for grabbing cocks.

Bad example-Leslie's been charged of groping a 26 year old pretty recently, as in the last week or so.

    https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/nov/25/john-leslie-charged-sexually-assaulting-woman-edinburgh-nightclub

I think much of what killed Leslie's career was what he did behind the scenes-he might very well have made a comeback, but for his sex tape with Abi Titmuss. It felt like there was some other skeletons in the closet that people knew of, thus he never made his comeback.

Hook's already got a new gig, he'll be back soon.

As for Al-I don't think he will. Tv3 took a huge gamble with Blind Date, paid a large amount of cash, had a large crew behind it, hyped it up to the nth degree, huge amount of promotion in the papers, TV and radio-and now have to shelve the whole thing. That's gonna mean job layoffs, a small fortune wasted, sets that will have to be torn down, branding that is useless now. They might be able to bring it back with a new presenter, maybe, but it's so tainted now, his dark shadow looms over it.

If RTE, or TG4, or any other channel, are looking at that, and saw the major losses incurred, I can't imagine they will be too keen to get involved with him again (Money talks, no matter the crime-and he lost TV3 money). As people note, he's 24, he could learn from these mistakes, but judging from his response-I doubt it. He may very well go on to do this crap again. I'd hope his career is finished, he got way too many chances for my liking.

I was deeply disappointed in certain individual's responses to this-people who know him and/or worked with him. They stayed silent. Ask em a question about the 8th, they'd shout your ear off-ask them about Al, who they worked with, and total silence.
There's a lot of people left with egg on their faces after this-apparently it was well known for some where in the region of 6 months, probably much longer.

Well, Muireann O'Connell got his radio gig, so good for her.

According to the Journal, its very unlikely those episodes will air. Unless they are shownnin the a.m in the graveyard shift.

I wonder what’s he actually doing now? Since this scandal broke he must have lost an incredible amount of money. I really can’t see how he can possibly make any sort of comeback. How can he? His whole act and persona was centred on innuendo so I can’t see that going down well in the future.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,168 ✭✭✭Ursus Horribilis

    Maybe so.
What else can he do though? I can't see many mainstream employers wanting to employ him. My guess is that he'll lie low for a while, then give some interviews where he talks about how he's had a year of hell, was tragically misunderstood, and been in therapy. Then make a low key comeback on the comedy circle. There are still people who will want to see him and enjoy his brand of smut and innuendo. I think he's finished as regards TV and radio though.
