look at her and slap your hands on your thighs a couple of times

If she is elderly then certainly offer, yes.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,299 ✭✭✭✭The Backwards Man

Whether it's a man or a woman, stand up and say, 'I'm tired sitting, there's a seat here if you want it'. If they take it grand, if they don't, grand.

    Lol.

I figure my motives and manners are my own, so I would offer my seat. If she is one of the readily offended so what? I won't change my character just because someone else hasn't found theirs.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

    I'd offer it.

    Elderly yes. Pregnant yes.

Otherwise no. You could be accused of demeaning her by giving her a seat implying a woman must sit and not stand.

If you're fit to stand for an oul wan you're fit to stand for a young wan.

Offer it or don't offer it, that's the only choice that has to be made.

It's the patriarchy deciding when women should be offended and by what sexist gesture!

No need unless she’s elderly or you think she’s preggers. No need to mention the latter to her if unsure, she’ll just think it’s being offered because she’s a woman.

Modern women want equality AND special treatment. Why should you give your seat to a woman? Let her stand. I despise women who think they’re entitled to a seat.

After the pros and cons of making th offer are weighed up the session will be over so don’t worry about it

    Push her into the pool

OP don’t offer your seat. If women want equality then they’ll get it. Let her stand. I despise women who think they have more entitlement.

Many women don’t expect it now. Despise though? Social mores don’t necessarily make sense and we all buy into them to some extent.

Offer it, if she takes it fair enough, if she declines fair enough... If offended push her in the pool

Had sort of the same dilemma recently. Was sitting at a bus stop beside a "heavyset" lady and I innocently asked her when it was due.
She roared at me that she wasn't pregnant.
I said to her I meant the bus you fat cun7.

    Push her into the pool

Exactly, OP will be barred from poolside and won't have to worry about next week's seating arrangement.

I would offer my seat, to male or female, based on need. I have back problems but if anyone was in greater need then I would give it up

Would have thought sitting looking at kids in a pool with a camera phone out would be more objectionable then giving or not giving your seat up.

Check first if she self-identifies as a woman?

This hold gender thing used to be simple......now, not so much :D

But yes, regardless, I'd probably offer the seat......sometimes it's nice just to be nice.

It's pretty obvious from your posts that you despise all women.

The pathetic qualification/excuse at the beginning of that post doesn't hide it.

So good you said it twice. I despise women, yeah we get it.

Bit over dramatic? Despise is a strong word to use, given the discussion is around seats at Saturday morning kids swimming. I hope no one at the kids swimming despises women, not a good msssge to send to the kids.

Where did the OP say the woman even noticed he was sitting and she was standing.

She probably couldn't give a flying Fck.

The best answer is the person who said swimming is over now, don't worry about it. Some people will make a drama out of nothing.

I would never offer my seat to a healthy under 60 year old of either gender unless I was about to leave and they were right there

As a man, I feel that it women want equality it's not just in the areas that suit them.

    Equal pay, fine.
    Equal opportunities, fine.
    Equal seating arrangements, fine.

Expecting to be treated like goddesses, not fine.

Not all women are like this, I know.

For what it's worth, if she's good looking then I'd offer.

Or offer, and if she gets uppity about feminism etc., apologise and say you thought she was pregnant. It'll go down a treat.

She’ll hit you then. And the white knights will jump in if you defend yourself. She’ll get away with assaulting you because it would be a woman hitting a man.

Jesus... do you live in some alternative universe where things like that actually happen?!

Because here in the real world, where adults live, that doesn't happen...

    Woah be careful there.
Too many men have taken a hit for thinking a woman was preggers when in fact she just eats too many mars bars.

Or she might accept or decline graciously. Not every woman is as highly strung and defensive as that.

I find it hard to believe many women would take offense. For any woman that does go off on a sexist rant then I fully back another posters suggestion to introduce her to the pool. It's just a kind gesture, nothing more.

He says it in all his posts. Normally drives me mad when other people say it but I love when gifted says it. I've no idea why. I picture him like a real cute Dad figure that's always messing and in a good mood :D

    Lol lol. Ha.

Kids must have swam the English Channel by now. Hope the woman was not wearing heels or her feet will be in bits standing there that long.

Yep. I often get offered a seat by the Dads at the side of a basketball court/hockey pitch (and no, I don't look preggers ;)). So far I've managed to contain my inner crazy and be grateful and gracious for the offer. You never know when I might crack though!
