Time to give up on belly button piercing?

I've had my belly button pierced for over 20 years and still love it. This summer I spent almost two months travelling so was sitting a lot and I found the piercing could sometimes be painful. I had a small ring in and I've never had a problem with that before.

Since I've come home I've cleaned it, given time without jewellery in, used a hydrocortisone cream as recommended by pharmacy and any redness or soreness has gone. I've tried different jewellery and the original ring and don't get more than a few days before it gets red and painful again.

Is it time to give up on the piercing? For 20 years I didn't feel it but for the last 3 months I'm so aware that it's there.

Have you tried just using a mild sea salt soak/saline solution on it? I'd never use any sort of cream on an irritated piercing as creams are far more likely to catch dirt, etc, due to their thickness.

If there is a piercer you can speak to that lives near you it is a better idea than to ask a pharmacist about it as they generally don't have any experience with piercings.
