Installation/service engineers - employees or contractors?

I used to work in the kitchen appliances business where almost all the service engineers are either self-employed service contractors, or they are employed by a service company who just service the product, they don't sell it.

Are there similar contractors / service companies in the security sector, or do all companies who sell / install security systems employ their own service people?

In this trade, companies sell and have employees who install and service equipment.
The same goes for the self employed, they sell and service and some employ other people.
Having said that some self employed lads just sub for larger companies.
