Which Courier from US

    Hi all,

This isn't a post about how to avoid VAT, etc. so don't worry :pac:.

I'm ordering something from the US and have the choice of delivery between FedEx, UPS, DHL and USPS. I'll be liable for VAT on the order, so I'm wondering which of these options will charge me the lowest administration cost. Does anyone know the various admin charges each of these have? I can't seem to find it online. The total is about $80 so (if my calculations are right) I'll owe just under €20 to the tax man. I'd rather not have to give more than that to the courier company :D

use address pal by An Post - it will work out cheaper.

Vat & duty if applicable is also charged on the delivery cost

So with An Post, delivery fee will be about €20-€30 + 6.50 customs fee (I think that's the fee now), so $80 (€70) + delivery fee = vat of about €20-€23 + customs fee

Should have mentioned that the $80 includes shipping to Ireland (free shipping over x amount). Am I liable for Customs Duty? The sticky suggests the cut-off for it is €150.

Customs probably wouldn't believe a figure of $80 including shipping via courier, USPS would be ok. That should come in via An Post and they charge €10 for customs clearance., which is the cheapest.

Thanks for that. I'll probably go with that option so.

Just noticed that USPS option seems to cost extra. Is there any of the others that I should go for (or any I should completely avoid)?

Not sure what you mean by Customs not believing a figure of $80. I'm ordering from a large electronic components company so they should have all their documentation in order.

Courier companies offer express services. It would normally cost a minimum of approx $80 just to ship it via UPS, Fedex or DHL. Postal services would normally be a tenth of the price.

Ah I see what you're saying now. Thanks for the heads up.

Turns out there was a fault with the website anyway and they only offer UPS to Ireland :D. I'll just have to wait and see what happens. They did tell me that they deal with duty while the VAT is on me so fingers crossed it won't be anything unexpected.

    Thanks for the help guys.
