This could be the wrong forum, please move it if it is.

If I trade at markets etc and want to take credit card payment, what kind of machine do I need to buy?

It needs to be portable and preferably inexpensive

If you have a suggestion, please state if it requires WIFI to work.

I have seen something called SumUP, anyone have experience of it?

Any time I have looked at a credit card machine, it has the name of the payment processing company (e.g. Elavon) on it, I'm not sure if you can just go out and buy your own machine.

A bit more Googling and I've applied for a SagePay account. I'd still appreciate any input though....thanks in advance

Sumup have a website which explains everything. You use your mobile phone with it.

I would be extremely wary about using a CC at some random stall at a market. Do people actually have these at markets? I would ask fellow traders if they thought it was a good investment, if they do indeed have them.

Plenty of food trucks / food stalls have card readers; usually Sumup but sometimes the mobile network based Verifone VX820 via a payment provider. These would be dealing in higher cost per single items sales but not always a higher total sale really.

Go to a Christmas Market in most of Europe and you'll see contactless readers on nearly every stall. Except in Denmark where its often Dankort-only which is extremely useful for an outsider....

Well I don't know if there's any risk to the customer. I can understand why some people might be wary.

I have had people say they wished they'd brought more money with them but they hadn't really expected to see anything they liked! And a lot of people don't tend to have much cash on them.

I don't think many traders do have them in my area, I couldn't say whether others do. A friend of mine who used to trade in the US has one, but she found it handy when she was there. Whether people make use of it in Ireland, I don't know.

I help trade I'm markets and use SumUp.

It's very easy and very handy. Never had anyone wary about it yet. You can also email receipts with it, which is a nice feature.

Am I right in saying SumUp doesn’t do cashback?

Wouldn't that be up to yourself? if the item came to €50, key in €100 and give them back €50?

You’d get charged for the full 100 euro in that case though. If you have a cashback function, you just get charged on the transaction value.
