Dublin Marina / Sailing Club

I'm seriously considering buying a boat for sailing (cruising) in and around Ireland. Around 38 to 40 ft.

I'd like to join a club but don't know anyone (afaik) who's a member of one.
Howth, Malahide and Poolbeg would be handiest for me, Howth sounds like the nicest option...
How difficult are they to join without knowing someone?

Is membership of a sailing club a way of getting cheaper marina fees?
Or am I still looking at €4k+ / year for a berth in a marina?

I'm sure you don't need to know anyone in a club to join up but I don't think it will make mooring prices any cheeper in the likes of Malahide or Howth. There are plenty of club members here that you will get to know soon enough :)

Easy enough to join Howth at present - membership details here - https://hyc.ie/join-our-club

    Asgard membership is great value.

Would be hard to get a boat of that size on the marina quickly. There is a waiting list.

DL marina would be a better bet for a boat that size.

I can't speak for the other clubs, but howth is not difficult to join.

If you want to have a boat on moorings or marina you'll need to be an ordinary member. Whilst the form asks for proposer, seconded and a letter of introduction, you don't need to know anyone. Someone from the membership committee will sit down with you instead and have a chat about the club, what we do, what your sailing background (if any) is and generally there shouldn't be a problem with getting membership.

The marina has a waiting list, but moorings are available in the meantime. The marina rates are definitely cheaper than visitor rates - it's not a commercially run marina so members do get much better value. If you're interested, it would be worth either giving the office a call or contacting the membership email address. Details here: https://hyc.ie/contact

I don't wish to dismiss membership of a club, I'm actually a long standing member in HYC.

However, DL Marina doesn't require any club membership, has no waiting list (which in Howth is substantial) and has reasonable fees. https://www.dlmarina.com/rates/

Similarly, Malahide also has reasonable rates but is less practical to get in and out of than DL. http://www.malahidemarina.net/new/index.php/prices
