So I'm not I'll with cancer or anything but I have had some mental health challenges for a while now. I am definitely out the other side now and am putting plans in place for period of learning, growth & discovery. I have for several years now had this urge to shave all my hear off but just never had the balls to do it! I thought 2 years ago when OH was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer was going to be my perfect excuse but he asked me not to.
Has anyone else shaved off a full head of shoulder length hair?

I didn't shave it of but I went from shoulder length hair to half an inch length. If you are not going for Britney Spears type meltdown it might be better to do it in stages. Get a good short haircut and then shave your head if you still want to.

Yes, I've always had a bit of a desire to do that. I don't think I have the facial structure, the height or the make up skills to pull it off and look like a woman. I have a pixie cut and I've had kids ask me if I'm a boy or a girl. :eyeroll:

At 30 I went from waist length to shaved bald because it was something I always wanted to experience. Was grand, free feeling, completely changed. Got some comments suggesting I was nuts, it didn't change my life or anything, but I am glad I did it because otherwise I would always wonder. It grows back, life rolls on, no guarantee you will never feel crap again, it's just a thing you do or did. I met local women in India who had done it for purposes of refocus so I had some context for the act, and used it that way, same maybe as yourself.

I appreciate your point on this one but personally I enjoyed the liberation of just going for it. Granted I did it for Shave or Dye also but it was something I had felt curious about and I found the whole apprehension and misgivings that people had about it rather bizarre. I mean considering I was so lucky to have good physical health and that hair (eventually) grows back it really usually a very reversible choice.

I have also suffered with my mental health and I'm pretty sure at the time that contributed to my decision. Doing it for a good cause means that even if you are unsure about it before or after, it will have always be a choice that has resulted in something positive. I wish the OP all the best whatever your decide.

As an aside, I know it's probably not just a social construct but I find the strong association between women and long hair quite annoying....it's almost as if short hair / shaved heads are unfeminine....if we broke down this idea then maybe it would also make the trauma of losing hair during ill health a little less traumatic.
