Yep with Declan Meehen Saturday nights 6 till 11, Declan was eventually moved to weekend breakfast and Enda Caldwell took over the Saturday night slot with a chart hits show called Planet Hits.

Was that disco show not called “Carwash”?

That was an automated show that came later, started around 2005 and lasted until about 2010

Carwash was on Q102, was it not?

No, I remember Carwash on Today FM. No Q102 where I live.

My apologies! All that disco dust must’ve played havoc with my memory

Just listening to RTE Gold this afternoon and heard Keith Walsh make reference to their "live" line up from 7am to 7pm, that "we've been doing this for a while now and let's enjoy it while it lasts".

I think that is probably an unofficial answer to what most people have been questioning.

That's a pity if it comes true. I think it has great potential but then again rte would rather spend money they haven't got on other commitments.

Maybe he was referring to the live line up returning to 7am to 1pm???

RTÉ have to put a proposal into the dept before they can close any of their Digital stations they are only in the process of doing this, they had planned to close those services by the end of the year, but it could be well in to 2021 before a new minister and a new department allows them to close those stations down.

Did you put in a for request?

I asked and they eventually said they were in the process of submitting a proposal, just 8 months after the announcement 🙄

RTE are returning one of the original weekend shows to the Gold schedule. "Ireland's biggest Jukebox" with Aidan Leonard returns this Sunday morning at 10am. Interesting...

    very interesting.
Aidan has been absent / on leave from RTE over the past 18 months or thereabouts...

incidentally, I was thinking a few weeks ago that it would have been better if RTE Radio 1 was running Ireland's biggest jukebox in the Sunday sport slot instead of Rick and will playing Atlantic 252 era hits as the jukebox was a very well know brand for almost 20 years on 2fm and It's a show that the radio 1 audience would have listened to making the Sunday roast for many years until Dan Healy moved it to digital where only anoraks would have listened.

I've missed this show since John Clarke was axed last March, can't wait for it to return, Aidan Leonard isca great choice

Ireland's Biggest Jukebox on RTÉ Gold from 10am until 2pm back Sundays with Aidan Leonard

I recall the show concept from now defunct station: Century Radio days 1989-1991 when it was originally called: "The Biggest Jukebox in Ireland".

When "Ireland's Biggest Jukebox" first aired some years later on RTÉ's 2FM, it's first presenter was Simon Young before John Clarke eventually took over the reigns. Below are just some of the shows RTÉ Radio 2FM used to play the hits of yesteryear such as:

The Golden Hour with Larry Gogan often within the Larry Gogan Show
Solid Gold Sunday with Michael MacNamara (aka Micky Mac who later presented 2FM's Dance Show)
Rock Roll & Remember on Sunday afternoons with John Clarke
Dial a Number One lunchtime on Saturdays with Gerry Wilson
30 Years of Hits on Sat/Sun afternoons: Lorcan Murray (now a presenter with RTÉ Lyric fm)
Ireland's Biggest Jukebox with Simon Young/John Clarke/Aidan Leonard

When Larry Gogan left 2fm in 2019, the station was without any "oldies" show whatsoever for the first time in it's history, tho Larrys golden hour hadn't been playing what I'd call "oldies" since 2014.

Yeah, I stopped listening to 2FM some years ago as I no longer enjoyed the material played. Once the station began focusing on the younger age demographic (like it would have when it originally launched as Radio 2 in 1979) it needed to bring Larry and the veteran presenters to more suitable slots elsewhere on RTÉ Radio 1 and RTÉ Gold. Today Dave Fanning is still completely out of place on today's 2fm schedule.

I switched to Today fm although; it's last major station revamp meant I would switch the radio dial again when Jim O'Neill, another ex-RTÉ Radio 2 DJ was dropped. That said, "Ed's Songs of Praise" was quite good when I tuned in recently but I still miss "Friday Night 80's show 7:00-11:00pm :(

I think the reason why people just adapted a disliking to the music played by 2fm and others like it goes deeper than a person's age. I know if I hear a good song regardless of its age I will view it as being a good song.

When I was growing up I used to love listening to the US top 40 and I remember two Dublin radio super pirates of the late 80's who integrated a lot of the US top 40 into their playlists. However, some older people at that time hated it and I can accept that, but for me in my mid teens it was such a great and exciting time to listen to radio.
Anyway, I just thought back then the production of the music was little more dynamic. The US charts consisted of pop but with some rock aswell.

In the mid 90's the US charts or rather airplay dissected into two main contemporary formats CHR and Hot AC and I think that is where the rot set in. The pure pop element of the chart was allocated to CHR and any rock element was allocated to Hot AC. Radio stations either became CHR or Hot AC (btw they were all considered CHR in the 80's) and something similar happened on this side of the Atlantic. Radio stations such as 2fm became purely CHR and so adopted a particular sound. Unfortunately this sound was also available on most of the other radio stations.
I am rabbiting on like an old man and this is probably a discussion for another forum but as I have gotten older, I find that the music played on CHR stations sounds very similar from a production perspective and so I tend to lose track of who is singing what.

BTW I know this is going away from RTE a bit but shows like Bee Bop Gold with Nails Mahoney and The Bop Shop with the late Bill Cunningham - now they were serious oldies shows.

Sunshine 101 and Q102 where two exceptionally well formatted CHR stations and did feature a lot of US Artists - but the songs fitted the format.

I remember hearing that the 'Yacht ' music of the late 70s and early 80s was produced with the FM optimod in mind.As an aside during the mid 80s 2FMs format was non existent .
Today the CHR music is produced with loudness in mind and that's why when you listen to eg FM104 the music / songs sound very similar after a while.

Back to Gold - what format is that aiming to be ? Classic Hits / Oldies / AC are a mix of all three ?

It's ironic that the stand out success show on Sunshine Hot Hit's 101 and Super sounds Q102 where the Beebop Gold and The Bop shop.

Sunshine and Super-Q were destroying 2fm by the late 80s, hence "the wireless and telegraphy act 1988"

Gold is a mix of all three IMHO

Well they were really the only two specialised shows on both stations as Bill didn't really advocate specialist shows.

The last proper oldies show on 2FM was The Biggest Jukebox on 2FM..was when John Clarke finished up in 2FM in 2013. John was playing stuff from the 50s to the 90s. Hard to believe looking back now that stuff played on 2FM.
At this point Larry was still doing The Golden Hour...but playing very recent oldies.

I am looking forward to hearing Aidan return RTE Gold tomorrow morning.

Best of luck to Aidan tomorrow. I think he was acting as programming director for RTE Gold for the past couple of years before his leave of absence if I'm not mistaken. Hope he has returned to that position.

I remember as a young lad in the mid 70s my older brothers would listen to "Disc a Gogan" on Radio Eireann, MW567kHz. It was when I got fermilior with the great Larry Gagan.

The show is 4 hours long too! The longest jukebox yet..original one on 2FM was 3 hours and RTE Gold was 3 and while Aidan was off 2 hours (Mike Moloney and Michael Cahill covering) ...then it was axed with all weekend presenter shows.
Great to have it back. Lets hope its not a regular playlist.

You and me both. I loved that show. It was the start of the weekend, for me, just sitting back on a Friday night listening to it.

Re: 2FM’s golden oldies I’d say Keith Walsh at the weekend is possibly their “oldies” show or at least the nearest you get to it.
