I would think so he might only spend a day a week recording links but he probably thinks about his playlist rather than just playing what’s on the computer

it’s a nice background show. No annoying listener shout outs just his curated playlist

"curated" 🤐 was this word used as much before, as it it these days ?

Something seriously wrong on Gold ATM.at There seems to be two streams playing at the same time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,681 ✭✭✭channelsurfer2

I see RTE Gold now has pre-roll adverts on the stream. I never got ads on TuneIn before. On Wednesday I was getting a pre-roll RTE Gold jingle (which might have been a test), but this morning I was greeted with an ad for Leap cards. And from previous experience with these types of ads, I assume that if I lose service while travelling, I'll get another ad before the stream resumes. Could end up putting me off altogether.

That's always been the case for me at least. And there used to be just one ad, but now there's two before the stream starts. A small price to pay though.

This happened to me. Its very annoying if you lose reception for a second.

There are now 2 ads preplayed when you click directly on the rte gold website and play it.

happens on radio.net and tunein, it's no fault of RTE

RTE Gold is by far the best radio station in Ireland

Carol Moran's drivetime show 4pm to 6pm sometimes is live, sometimes voice-tracked or like today there were just back to back songs and Gold jingles, with no reference to the More Music Drive

The 96k stream at https://www.rte.ie/manifests/gold.m3u8 has a pre-roll ad in it, I presume this is the one that the apps are using? The HLS stream at https://liveaudio.rte.ie/hls-radio/gold/chunklist.m3u8 seems to be ad-free for now.

Don’t get any ads on the steam if you are overseas? At least I don’t get them

rte gold back-up tape has now kicked in on the radio 1 channel fully since 1am...complete with really old liners and jingles probably from 15 - 18 years ago.

during cathal murray's pre recorded late date show on radio 1 up until 1am, it kicked in a few times with 10cc's I'm not in love.

over on rte gold (on the 'rte gold' channel) it continues as normal. so different songs (not the back-up tape)

Rte Gold on autopilot from 26-31st and have to say the music selection seems to be better without presenters. They seem to have a large database of songs and it’s the presenters that are causing some songs to be repeated more often than they should be!

Is there a reason why Rte gold not on FM? It's my favourite station and was able to listen in the car with DAB. I can stream through phone but I drive on back roads with patchy signal and its no fun having to listen adds every few minutes.

First of all, RTE can't just decide to put a 7th national station on FM, second, National FM carriage will cost a couple of Million euro per year. Third If RTE Gold was an FM station and had to worry about money and jnlrs, it would end up sounding nothing like RTE Gold in it's current form

It was great to hear 4 hours of 80 s music non stop on RTE Gold on Saturday last.

For New Year's Day the Top 100 is Duets.

I'm liking the early picks eg Winter Song by Sara Bareilles and Ingrid Michaelson.

It's actually a brilliant idea, and what a range of songs are included. Even a duet between Patsy Cline and Jim Reeves (see Wikipedia for why that was unusual!)

Jon Kenny playing Killing in the Name by Rage Against the Machine giving Gold some edge in the afternoon

Not all presenters use the database.

    I'm adding to GSF's comment…

"They seem to have a large database of songs and it’s the presenters that are causing some songs to be repeated more often than they should be"

He's right, It is up to the presenters to choose the music..

Not all the presenters use the RTÉ library, and you can tell who doesn't by simply listening.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,884 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

The "physical" RTE library is not used at all by any presenter across the radio network, if that's what you are referring to ? It is gathering dust. And if it is - very occasionally by probably Raidio na G looking for a traditional piece of music not widely available.

Songs on RTE Gold, whether chosen by a presenter or a playlist generator come from the same "library" - the radioman computer, from spotify or ilikemusic.com resources.

In the early days of RTE Gold (John Clarke), when the Gold music database was being created for the station songs were probably ripped from the physical library CD or vinyl, but not anymore - it's easier to just add a song using a file from third party music suppliers.

I bet that the RTE radio Music library still has one or two full-time employees even though it's not being used 😆

Not necessarily. A lot of presenters draw from their own libraries, which was the point I was making. They don't depend on the database, hence the variety

An online database wouldn't necessarily be reliable. Particularly when it comes to single mixes. Much better to use your own library. Nothing worse than hearing album versions on the radio now when the single mix was a lot different.
