What's your favourite cereal?

After about two decades of not eating breakfast and not being a "morning person", I've been making a real attempt to wolf something down before heading out the door recently in the interests of not entirely subsisting on coffee for half the day.

Holy jesus, how good is cereal though? I've been through Cheerios, Special K (bleh at best tbh), honey loops, crunchy nut cornflakes (HOLY MOTHER OF GOD YES) and am currently mid way through a box of coco pops and actively open to suggestions for my next fix.

    What's your favourite cereal AH?

Not a big fan in general, but some brands of granola are nice.

I have recently returned to granola and it's sweet nutty goodness.

I think porridge has the texture and taste of cement so probably not. Bit of tea and bread sounds nice though

Throw in one weetabix, and then fill the bowl with equal parts - rice crispies, cornflakes and country store.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,281 ✭✭✭Valentina

I'd rather have a bowl of Coco Pops

agree, Organic Flahavans Oats are fairly decent, don't even bother heating them up, dash of honey and all set.

Would avoid all that other synthetic junk, was shocked to see 'lucky charms' (thought it was a joke) and a multitude of other artificially-multi-coloured cereals for sale over the pond, no wonder they've major issues with ADHD.

And on the isle next to it a whole entire row dedicated to again, artifically coloured sugar laden 'pop' drink bottles. Sure what's wrong with aul simple drink of structured water vibrating at 430.65hz.

Hate the way people have to point out that sugary cereals are full of sugar - years ago most people would have been happily oblivous to this instead of being such informed killjoys. At some point between their childhood and now they realised with sadness that the cereals they actually like the taste of were full of sugar and bad for them and so to stop other people from getting to feel the joy that was taken away from them, they felt a need to tell those who still ate them how unhealthy they are. They also aim to make up for the satisfaction they dont get to experience from eating nice tasting food, with satisfaction from making other people feel inferior for eating junk food and getting to feel more informed (even though it isnt admirable to be informed nowadays since unlimited information is available to all on the internet.)

I would rather eat stuff like frosted/cocoa shreddies for breakfast every day but to avoid getting fat I eat bland low-sugar stuff like porridge or shredded wheat.

Despite information available a lot of people are oblivIous to crap and in particular sugar in cereals

I regret ever eating cereals but as a kid I didnt know any better

Make porridge with milk, add in berries, fruit, seeds etc and its pretty decent so its not bland at all

Tesco Strawberry Crisp is my favourite at the moment, or their nut granola. I can't stand milk so eat them with yoghurt and some strawberries and raspberries. Porridge too, unreal if you add chopped dates to it before cooking it then throw some nuts and raspberries/ banana on top.

Frosted Cornflakes. Only rarely but then I could murder for a bowl.
In general I'm not a breakfast person though.

Sugar is the new smoking. Take your pick: Obesity (Ire is quickly becoming the fatties of the EU), diabetes, poor liver function, slow metabolism.

Taste doesn't necessary equate only to having added sugar. A nice fat steak covered in butter is probably better for you than that can of cola with 9 spoons of sugar in it. Yes fat is better than sugar, you will most likely get fatter by eating extra sugar, not actual foods that are high in fat.

If that all seems too complicated, then stick to JERF – 'just eat real food'.

    Shreaddies.

Low sugar content and they break up the porridge monotony.

Golden Grahams were my fave as a youngster!

Mixed with sugar was a delicious and very-appreciated 1990s childhood treat. "The dust". Rice krispies dust was also good with sugar.

I think I've thanked most posts in this thread because I love cereal! Mmm delicious sugary cereal! I even liked the post where someone mixed a load of cereals together.

I only eat weetabix though.. cause sugar equals bad and all that.

Still though, I'd murder some corn pops now!

Greatest cereal of the 90s perhaps? Either that or Ricicles.

Actually, does anyone notice that sugary cereals are way less sugary? Out of the leading chocolate-flavoured cereals (Nesquik, Weetos, Coco Pops, Coco Shreddies), all are way less chocolatey than they used to be. Weetos in particular are seriously diminished in niceness! Used to be crunchy glazed hoops of chocolate. Now they're brown cardboard hoops smelling feintly of chocolate.

I love Kelloggs Ricicles. But only once a year or so these days.

Kelloggs START is also great. I could (and have) eat a whole box in a sitting. But only a few times a year now.

Generally Weetabix or Porridge. Sets me up well for the day rather than leaving me feeling a bit unwell and hungry after an hour.

I like most most cereals with a few exceptions - Cinnamon Grahams - puke!

And does anyone remember Banana Bubbles - wtf were they about...

I remember as a kid adding a few spoons of sugar to most cereals apart from sugar puffs, frosties etc but now you never seem to need to add sugar even to corn flakes. I deduce that cereals have far more pre-added sugar nowadays.

I loved them in the 90s anyway. They were almost florescent yellow! :D

Yeah I think they are less sugary. Didnt sugar puffs have to change its name? I think Dave gorman was talking about it one night. I think he said because sugar was rationed during the war, it was seen as a total luxury after that, so sugar puffs included it in their name as a big selling point. But sugars popularity has declined so much now , that they had to change their name a few years ago to honey puffs or something.

    Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs
"They're crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside, and they don't have a single natural ingredient or essential vitamin to get in the way of that rich fudgy taste!"

Yeah I haven't eaten sugar/honey puffs in a very long time - they were "the" nice-cereal my parents would usually buy for us as a treat! Surely one of the least healthy. Doesn't fill you up at all. Anytime I see them now it's in the likes of Dealz and there is something sad or "bygone era" about them, like the box looks really different. The new "honey monster" looks counterfeit or something. I'd say few parents would buy such a blatantly unhealthy cereal for their kids nowadays and that is why they have become so obscure.

Sorriest thing I ever did as a parent was to give my kids anything other than porridge or weetabix....

They do love their sugary cereals when we are on holidays though, Kelloggs Krave, cookie crisp,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,214 ✭✭✭jojofizzio

Love all the old traditional cereals but in the interest of health etc. I have reverted to boring porridge...barely palatable but there you go...I fecking adore Frosties and would eat them all day every day if I could eat anything and get away with it...
Anyone remember yellow Ready Brek from the 80's ..butter flavour I'm sure it was marketed as...God I loved that stuff (three or four spoons of sugar I'm sure I had with it and warm milk)....oh to be five again...
