The issue I have with the ad is it's crap.

But Racist? An old Jewish lady telling a black lad to read the prices. Who are they stereotyping there? Black people don't have money or that Jewish people are money mad?

    Who actually give a s**t??

why is the world OBSESSED with racism when will this fad die and people just care about actual racist things rather than trying their utmost to find racism in every single aspect of life

They're two teenagers that probably don't have much pocket money so she's making sure she doesn't heat up a bagel for nothing.

My father couldn't see a black character in anything without going on about it for ages. I remember I was watching an episode of The Simpsons when my father walked in, saw Carl and started ranting about how they have to have blacks in everything and now they're even in cartoons.

You sound like him. I bet you're impossible to watch television with.

The auld granny says to the black guy "before you read the menu read the prices" insinuating he can't afford a bagel because he's black.

Scraping the bottom of the barrel what people can be offended and outraged by.

OK, what would be the solution there? Put a white person there to try avoid hurting the feelings of the outrage brigade. Or... it doesn't matter what skin colour you are. Read the prices before you read the menu.

I wouldn't go that far! It's still a terrible ad for bagels that are about as American as Goodfellas pizza

if they put a white person in his place someone would be offended as there is no black person in the add and they would be crying 'why are the african americans of new york not represented

It's more ageist than racist. Why do they think only and old person can run a city?

    Ah come on.

    Are people being deliberately obtuse?

A Jewish woman snapping about money. A black person stereotyped as too poor to have a dollar or 2. It's at least possible to construe it as racist. I think it's probably more unfortunate, but I can see why someone might point to it and say "huh?"...

i suppose it is possible , but only by the usual clowns looking for something to moan about

Bill Maher said it best when he said that Liberals in the US have spent so much time, energy and focus on this type of hysterical outrage, that they pretty much let the current moron in the White House stroll in through the front door unopposed.

She's being sexist. I reckon she's talking to the woman. And she's referencing the gender pay gap. How she knows the woman will never earn as much as the man. Glass ceiling. Wearing caps in graduation. Something.

... Am I doing this right?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,855 ✭✭✭Nabber

I pressed play seen it was a white woman and I as immediately outraged.

Bagel shops like the one portrayed in the ad are very much an NYC thing.
In common with a lot of owner operated retail businesses in NYC that sort of robust brusque way of talking is considered normal.
It's part of the deal and a large part of the charm.

Only if you're the kind of person who looks really, really hard to find racism, sexism etc in everyday situations so you can point and scream "THAT'S RACIST!".

You know I'm really starting to see the sense in the comments that people who often label racism everywhere seem to be the ones that are are truly obsessed with race

Ah come on now seriously. It really isnt. She is having a quip with a couple; a black man and a white woman

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

If there wasn't a black man in the ad, the PC brigade would be complaining there wasn't a black person in the ad.

Some people need to get a life.

Exactly because normal people (i.e the vast majority) absolutely detest this type of bs.

    That ad is racist? Really?

    It's ridiculous.

This is why the term "snowflake" for current generations is getting so much traction. Do they have a life? Because there is a hell of a lot more serious things out there other than this.
