Colposcopy in Drogheda?

    Hi all,

Just looking for a bit of advice, went for my first smear last November and nurse got doctor in to double check what she was seeing, apparently it was an ectropion. So she said it was nothing to worry about that it can happen through hormonal changes from being on the pill. My smear came back perfectly normal but she had me referred to get a closer examination done to be on the safe side. So fast forward almost a year and my partner and I decide to stop the pill to get my periods regular in the hope we will start TTC. A week later I get an appointment to go up to Dr Harkins clinic in Drogheda. The GP told me it was likely my ectropion would disappear when I would come off the pill, so I postponed the examination until November time to hopefully give it time to disappear!

So I guess my questions are, has anyone been for one before? Is it possible to have my partner in with me while the doctor is checking me out? (bf is a farmer so is well used to looking at odd things lol!) I know it seems stupid but I wanna know as much as possible (I just got a letter with my date to go, no directions where to go in the hospital, what to wear, can I eat before hand?) So yeah as much info as possible would be great! Do I have to wear a horrible hospital gown? can I eat before it? Is there much bleeding after it? Any replies would be much appreciated!! Thanks!!

A colposcopy is pretty much a smear with a camera. That's my very basic explanation and I'm sure some people would have a better definition.it takes a little longer and there was a little pain but only for a second. Nothing unbearable .
I am speaking from my experience so others could differ but I found I could go on with daily routine as normal. No bath etc for 24 hours. You could take a panadol an hour before going in.
I'd little to no bleeding. They provide pads. They gave me a gown to put over my own clothes. Had to take off trousers and knickers so I learned to wear a skirt or such to the appointments and just pulled it up over the knees to keep my decency.
Have to say I found it easier than a smear . They knew how to put in the scope without hurting whereas the nurse in my doctors surgery had to try a few times and was very painful.
Try not put off the colposcopy, I ended up having a few over a 3 year period and I've now the
All clear but I'll not dread having to have one again in the future if I ever have to.

Thanks for the info Midnight, I will (hopefully) not have any cells on my cervix, apparently I have an ectropion so fingers crossed all will be well. Can I ask if you were told you could have someone in with you? I really want my partner to be with me as he can really settle my nerves (which I know I will be) but pretty much got no information in the letter sent to me :( Thanks for answering :)

So sorry only seeing this now.
I am not sure about having someone in with you but can't see why they'd mind. I had a nurse holding my hand while doc did the scope so perhaps your partner could replace nurse at your side
