I'm planning a holiday to Thailand for next January. There are flights in the 500 to 600 euro range with air France and turkish airways . However I'm weary of flying with them. I really just want to fly with emirates but the flight with them us 1000 euro

What's your rationale for giving certain carriers a wide berth?

    Emirates just seem the safest

Turkish 'airlines' are one of the largest airlines in the world, are part of the star alliance too. Emirates are decent, but unless you're traveling business or better, there's no difference.

I don't recall any issues with Turkish Airlines over the years, safety wise.

I can see where OP is coming from. I've had that internal conversation with myself. Given the terrorist incidents in both countries, how hard would it be for someone to place an explosive device on a plane...?

Why? How many accidents/terrorists incidents etc has Turkish had? I've flown with them loads of times. Fairly new fleet, pleasant staff. No issues.

Would you fly British airways or American?

Yes you are being irrational. now if you had said you were wary of Malaysian Airlines, you would have been being sensible.

Because no air France plane has ever crashed

There's a reason France has biggest air accident research centre in Europe?

I know it's irrational and sometimes you overthink things. I've flown Turkish Airlines and British Airways to Far East. No issues.

OP asked a question. It resonated with me...

Terrorist incidents... wow the media is great! Every country has had terrorist incidents. You're best not flying anywhere at all. Lock yourself in your house just in case you might meet one.

To be fair, I went on to say it was irrational. I get where the OP is coming from. Would I travel with TK or AF? If the price was right, yeah.

PS will I send you a post card from my next trip to Budapest or will you wait until I get to Berlin in December? ;)

    Yes. Irrational.

Look for evidence of a lack of safety instead of just a hunch or a notion.

I'd fly Air France or Turkish without any hesitation - I'd pick Turkish ahead of Emirates.

The flight is probably going to be the safest part of the trip. If you're really worried about mitigating risks I'd start looking at which route you'll take to the airport. You're far more likely to meet your end driving to the airport than on the flight.

I have flown with Turkish airlines and wouldn't have any problems flying with them. However I wouldn't fly with any of the chinese airlines (china eastern etc) or Aeroflot

Why not Aeroflot? They're a great airline now.

    Just wouldn't trust the maintenance

I'd fly with any of them, no point worrying about 1 in a million scenarios.
The 400 quid is much better of spent on enjoying yourself while actually on holidays rather than paying it for the seat to get there.

To be fair I kinda understand where you're coming from OP, I remember seeing a photo of an Air Ethiopia plane a few years back and thinking "glad I'll never have to fly with them".

Now thats probably a bit OTT from me, but for some reason I have it in the back of my head that maybe some airlines have been maintenance procedures and technicians than others.

Probably false of course, considering so few airlines actually suffer any crashes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,620 ✭✭✭✭coylemj

First of all, if a particular airline flies into the EU and/or the US, it means that it's maintenance procedures have been audited and found to be satisfactory.

Second, all of those recent terrorist incidents in Europe have involved people driving a vehicle into crowds and/or using knives or guns. Getting any kind of a weapon onto a plane is virtually impossible, the people who hijacked the planes for the 9/11 attacks were able to bring knives onboard because the US refused to pay proper wages or provide adequate training for airport security. European airports have had very high levels of security with properly paid operatives all the way since the Palestinian hijacks back in the 1970s.

Flew Aeroflot from Hong Kong to Brussels via Moscow early this year. They were great.

Safety should be considered as a function of accidents per Km flown, not as an unqualified number. For safety, Air France is rated 38th, Turkish 49th and Malaysian 57th. http://www.jacdec.de/airline-safety-ranking-2015/

I remember listening to a fascinating conversation between Perth ATC and a Malaysian flight that lasted about 25min where the ATC was asking the Malaysian pilots what their endurance was. In 25 minutes he never got a straight answer because they couldn't understand simple English. I then as a passenger experienced the hairiest landing ever in a Malaysian Airline flight landing in dry, clear conditions with a bit of a cross wind. It felt like the pilot nearly lost it swerving side to side after smashing it into the runway. Have never flown with them again and never will.

You probably are being irrational, but I've done it too.

I paid extra before to avoid Turkish Airlines, and that was 5 years ago before the terrorism stuff really kicked off.

    Best regards,
    David

I fly regularly and personally I have never flown Air France or Turkish airlines but I do avoid Air France, however my reason for avoiding Air France is that Charles de Gaulle is supposed to be a head wrecking nightmare with arrogant staff and very expensive. Also there seems to be a strike in France every second week so you are more likely to experience disruption. Air France also have poor quality onboard.

I personally avoid Turkish airlines as the country is prone to terrorism and Turkey is on the way to becoming a true Islamic dictatorship under Erdogan. Fly with any of the ME3 (Qatar, Etihad, Emirates) and you won't go wrong. Cathay Pacific from next June is also a good bet for Thailand. Flights to Thailand in January is pretty expensive as its peak travel demand, my advice would be get the cheapest flight with the least amount of stop-overs. Pop a sleeping pill on the long flight and you'll be grand. More risk dying crossing the street.

I've never understood why a considerable number of folks dose themselves with powerful sedative-hypnotic medication, which could profoundly impact on their ability to think and act swiftly & decisively, in the event of an emergency situation.

    What nonsense.

The 9/11 hijackers used box cutters which were perfectly legal to bring on board any aircraft at the time.
    Try checking facts next time.

Only the hijackers on American 77 (which crashed into the Pentagon) were reported to have used box cutters, the hijackers on the two flights which hit the WTC used knives.

The 9/11 commission report (Chapter 1, page 8) stated: 'Unlike the earlier flights, the Flight 77 hijackers were reported by a passenger to have box cutters'.'

    http://govinfo.library.unt.edu/911/report/911Report_Ch1.pdf

The last flight was United 53.........

At least ten passengers and two crew members shared vital information with family, friends, colleagues, or others on the ground. All understood the plane had been hijacked. They said the hijackers wielded knives and claimed to have a bomb

When I travelled to the States (California) a few weeks ago, I took an alcohol/benzo combination prescribed by my doctor and it was great. The flight was 10 hours but It was the first time I slept nearly through not just on the flight journey but from the airport to my relatives house 40 minutes away.

Don't even remember crossing through immigration and customs since they waved me through. Though memory loss is a common symptom of combining the two drugs so it shouldn't be surprising.

Fly everywhere with El Al. Their planes not only have mossad security, they also have countermeasures Air Force one would be proud of.

Or walk, no chance of crashing then.

Remember, Americans are full of bullsh1t - how many mobile phone networks had capabilities to provide service from an aircraft flying about 500 mph now let alone back in 2001 especially as the USA were well behind Europe on mobile technology.

There was voice messages left on phone answering machines from people on the flights in new york anyway

    Remember transcripts being released before

The most ignorant staff I have even met were Air France in CDG. Travelling with 2 kids, one disabled. Had no ramp to get down to the tarmac to get on the plane, asked could someone help/access to elevator etc. Staff turned shouted at me saying "It's not my problem to get you on the plane" and walked off. Had to get a stranger help with baggage and a buggy while carrying the child down the stairs and holding the others hand.

Personally I would never fly US Airways to the US again, always avoid them and Air France

No OP I wouldn't say you're being irrational. My other half is an air traffic controller, who will absolutely not fly with certain airlines due to the poor level of English and competency levels of their pilots.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 176 ✭✭nigel_wilson

Despite the cheap price of Ethiopian Airlines from Dublin to Los Angeles I don't think I'll ever fly it again :(

I'll either choose Aer Lingus, British Airways or KLM when going. Yes I know, the latter two don't fly directly to some cities.

I'm not trying to come across as intolerant or racist but when I've had the most problems with people spilling food, flight attendants not serving properly when I've flown with African airlines and/or sat near people from Ethiopia, Nigeria.

Have to say it was a nice flight. Was envious of business class though!

From what I've heard, the Arabian airlines are pretty good.

Not Emirates but an ad for Qatar Airways.
