Anyone been listening to this mostly-80s station?

It is mainly a 1980s music station and I heard it for the first time last night. Bands I have heard include the Clash, Bronski Beat, Black Sabbath and the Stranglers.

Could it be the new Radio Nova??

Hardly considering it's a pirate with a sketchy signal in most places.

Hope it stays, I'm liking the mix of well known and more obscure tracks

Same crowd who ran sun fm about 15 years ago ( they used to do a great 80s night in kennedys on a Saturday night )

live programming now on Connect 101.2 with a mobile number also being announced - 80s format confirmed.

Signal good over the South West and Northside of Dublin - non existent in the SE of Dublin.

101.2 is an interesting frequency to use - that part of the band fell out of use by pirates in the mid 2000s

Most of the music is from the 1980s. Just hearing a Status Quo song from the late 60s. Pictures of matchstick men. Heard Jackson 5 "I want you back" earlier. Currently playing is the Housemartins

Now playing: Prince's version of Nothing Compares 2 U.

Connect were on and off the air yesterday sorting out a few issues - they came back on yesterday (Tuesday) evening with adjustments to their audio (though obviously not optimod) - signal is strong across West Dublin / Clearest Dublin station heading down towards Kildare / Naas etc

Playing a lot of forgotten hits - including the Jam song (albeit a rather ropey version and not the true original version)

So far so good. But, right now, they are playing Sex Bomb by Tom Jones, which was released in the late 90's. Earlier, they played I'm Too Sexy by Right Said Fred, which is also from the 90's. So, I guess it's not all 80's.

think we can forgive them for that - playing some hard to get 80s tunes - they know their music !

We have it on in the background at work some days, some absolute rarities and interesting choices like Timbuk 3's "My Future's So Bright...I Gotta Wear Shades". Haven't heard any live DJ and whilst some of the choices are clearly not 80s ("Hero" from Enrique Iglesias for example which has to be a Naughties song let alone 90s!) it plays all genres which is a welcome change to most Irish radio. I've heard a lot of soul an funk on it, which is particularly hard to find on radio here, and even some 12" versions. Long may it last.

12" of Milli Vanilli's "Girl You Know It's True" on now. LOL.

When I first heard it I though it was the Coldcut Remix of Eric. B & Rakim's "I Know You Got Soul" as it uses the same drum sample.

Now it's 5 Star's "Find The Time". I used to have a thing for one of the girls (in particular) in that band.....

12" of Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam feat. Full Force "I wonder if I take you home". Classic 80s early hip hop/R'n'B.

I love the fact they're playing 12inch versions TBH.

They said they were put off the air,and it would be back to boring talk shows and usual rubbish from the usual stations..thats it in brief..not exact wording used..It was shared on the radio anorack page, and djs of the irish pirate era..but I dont see the post on there now..Attachment not available is what comes up..

    From their Facebook page:

"Connect FM has been taken off air.
Thanks for the happy memories. We loved bringing you THE GREATEST mix of 80s songs!
And now we return you to the endless talkshows, 'shock jocks' and 'phone in misery porn' drivel that makes up our Government sanctioned Broadcasting all across the FM dial................. hisssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss"

Such a shame. I enjoyed listening to it, whenever I got a chance to. In response to the disgruntled listeners' comments on Facebook, one comment from someone involved with the station stands out:

"Can't help but wonder just who felt SO threatened by a relatively small operation that we were closed down so fast. Some station owners and managers have very short memories, already forgetting where they started out and the ideals they presumably espoused on their way to industry 'success'. Still, it's a handy way to further dilute original licence submissions and morph into mediocrity."

When I originally started this thread, it was 101.2 but now it has moved to 93.2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,359 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

I tuned in for a short while yesterday. Since it moved to 93.2, the signal has definitely been getting stronger around Dundrum and Ballinteer. It practically was non-existent around this neck of the woods previously on 101.2.

Now, could anyone tell me if it has some connection with the guy behind Easyradio? EDIT: I had a look at some posts on the Bandscan Thread and it looks like it is indeed the same guy that is behind Easyradio!

The original TX site was raided - they are definitely a lot stronger in the South East now.

IF there is a link to easy then they have a fairly powerful TX at their disposal

The best station in Dublin right now. I've given up listening to 4fm, Sunshine & Q102, I'm sure many others have too. Showing them how it should be done. Go team Connect!

Loud and clear tonight with CONNECT showing on the Rds. MUSIC POWER CONNECT FM!

on 92.0 FM it should be noted - clearer frequency than 93.2 but care is needed with Spirit .2 away.

Spirit Radio are approved for 500 watts from Saggart on 92.2. Even though Dublin is already largely covered by Spirits 89.9 FM transmitter from Three Rock, transmitting just 0.2 away from a licensed operator with a strong signal is not a wise move.

The music is a bit mad at times, but it throws up some great tunes that you don't hear anywhere else.

    I'm all in!

The 92.2 is directional and not aimed at Dublin - personally I think 91.9 would be better noting that 92.1 is still a frequency allocated to Dublin iirc
