2014 would have been the year the 140bhp version was replaced by the newer 150bhp version across most of the VAG range. The 140bhp would have been reliable enough but if you can stretch to a 150bhp version then it would be slightly more refined and fuel efficient.

What about the cheat software issue?

Find a car that hasn't had the "fix" and don't bother getting it done.

Made no noticible difference to mine.

It did to plenty others though after the fix. Good news is that VW may replace your EGR foc. :)

My brother leaves Hillingdon every Friday to get back home to Manchester(all motorway),and manages 78 mpg on the new 150 bhp 2.0.

It's across the range of their TDI engines.

It's great to be aware of the emissions fix and all but I wouldn't let it dominate my choices. In fairness, most cars that suffer a failure seem to suffer almost immediately or certainly in the first 1000kms.

So if the car has had it done and appears to be driving fine, it probably will be fine and if not, you can collect your free EGR which was probably going to fail further into the future anyway at your expense, not VWs.

    Thanks for informing so far
I'm I Right in thinking they don't suffer from oil pump problems plus

Are the 1.6 tdi very under powered for that size of car

No mention of the 140 version in there (or even the tdi for that matter), we have 6, all software updated ages ago and all running fine since.
