Mac Uilliam in Jobstown. It's a utter utter **** hole, where people toss rubbish into the middle of the streets, the local traveling community burn tons of rubbish nightly on the green mere feet away from people's houses. The odd burnt out car arnt uncommon sights. Literally gangs of kids numbering close to 3 digits roaming around. Majority of the local populous don't work, but it's also the environment they are in.

    Such a total **** hole.

It went from very disadvantaged in 2006 to disadvantaged in 2011 (when I moved in - obviously I improved things) but now it's back to very disadvantaged. Whoops.

Where we lived in Arklow, they have it fairly spot on at very disadvantaged.
We moved to a nicer spot in a village outside Gorey and we have been upgraded to just disadvantaged.

Very affluent..it just feels like a pretty regular middle class area though. Surprised by how few places there were on either end of the extreme on the map, only a couple of blocks on the whole city which were extremely disadvanataged or extremely wealthy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,245 ✭✭✭myshirt

What immediately struck me is Donegal. As an extremely low contributor of the money this country generates, I would have expected them to be less affluent than they are.

They are getting a smashing deal there. They should be writing a Christmas card to Dublin saying thank you.

    MARGINALLY ABOVE AVERAGE
Mine went from Very Affluent in 2011 to Affluent in 2016. I think their data is a bit off though, cos I know in my immediate area in 2011 there were loads of people who'd been laid off, but they're saying the unemployment rate was higher in 2016 than in 2011.

Marginally above average! That map has the phoenix park as marginally below average, so Michael D and the US ambassador are slightly disadvantaged??? It makes the north side look more disadvantaged then it should be.

I'd have to seriously disagree with you there.

Poor public services, as in we don't even have a train linking us to Dublin. Roads are, by and large, very poor.

Letterkenny IT also has the highest number of grant recipients out of all 3rd level colleges, with 74.43% of students in receipt of a grant. This gives you a good idea of the income of a lot of the people in Donegal.

The government really doesn't invest much in Donegal at all and is widely regarded as the county that's so far away for the capital that it ceases to matter.

I suppose it depends on how many ministers are from Donegal at any time.

What would be a bid advantage in your life right now?
No worries about accommodation? Very cheap below market rate subsidised rent for as long as you like, close to if not in the city centre?
    Free medical care?
    Free education?
Lots of free time to pursue education, your own interests?

They are all major advanatges in life and the state provides it all to people.
Those who work, have to scrimp to pay mortgage or rent, no free healthcare and long commutes are the real disadvanteged.

How can there be an above average and a below average, without there being an average?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,647 ✭✭✭lazybones32

... where people toss rubbish into the middle of the streets, the local traveling community burn tons of rubbish nightly on the green mere feet away from people's houses...

If the trav's burned the rubbish that others dropped, it could be a case of one problem being the solution to another problem...but i can't imagine many of them doing something that could be called work, or of service to others.

The section in donegal that is extreme disadvantage looks quite large but is very remote. Must be about three houses in the whole area

But it measures education, employment, single parent stats etc which tbf are all likely to be positive stats for an area with expensive property.
    I'm probably missing something.

    MARGINALLY BELOW AVERAGE
Marginally above average, up from disadvantaged in 2006 & 2011. Areas surrounding still disadvantaged though. I'd agree with that, our little pocket is settled and all my neighbours here are either in their 50's/60's and retired or young, professional looking families who bought houses in last year or two.

    MARGINALLY ABOVE AVERAGE
Where I live in Dublin comes up as affluent as far as I can make out on that map although the area is a patchwork of affluent and above average. It's a quiet area but not particularly posh. Dunno how they calculate it but presumably it's because it's got a mix of small estates but with a lot of one-off houses.

Where I was brought up in Dublin comes up as very disadvantaged on the map.

Fantastic decision, everyone should do it imo

Where I'm living now it says marginally below average, but for my home house it says affluent. I'd say some places in Galway got off fairly lightly there!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,734 ✭✭✭✭osarusan

It doesn't fully define what the categories are or how they are established.

As far as I can see, there are only three areas in the whole country that are extremely affluent, which at first glance, suggests that the criteria are pretty flawed/skewed.
