Your favourite moment in football...

...doesn't necessarily have to be some well known moment, like the Bonner penalty save, or Keane ghosting in to drill home off the post against Germany in '02...though Christ knows they were wonderful moments.

For me, it was Kevin Doyle scoring against NEC Nijmegen at Turner's Cross in 2004. Standing in the Shed with my wife, ground heaving, sun beaming down, ball nestles in the net and the place goes wild.

Hard to pick a favourite, but McAteer vs Holland, Keane vs Germany, Long vs Germany and Brady vs Italy all spring to mind.

Long vs Germany for me. Before the game most fans I spoke to in the pub were just hopeful that we werent beat out the gate. At half time there was a bit of hope but when that goal went in the whole stadium just went insane. Im getting goose pimples thinking about it again.

These 2 for me in recent years coz I was there and got the full emotion of the moment. Yeah there were more historic ones that I watched on TV with Bonners save, Houghton's goals v England and Italy but no substitute to a live event.

Less a favourite moment, but most memorable one for me Michael Thomas' goal for Arsenal in the league decider v Liverpool back in 89.

Heartbreaking for so many reasons, given the importance of the game in a sporting context, as well (more importantly) as it the timing of it after Hillsborough.

Yeah, it's hard to beat being there, which is why I plumped for a relatively low key moment over what might be considered bigger moments on bigger stages. But not only was I there, I was in the Shed, and Doyle scored in front of us. While the win at home to Derry in the final game of the following season was a much bigger event in City's history, it just didn't have the sheer thrill of that moment for me.

Ahhhhh...thanks. After referring to goals and penalty shoot outs in my own first post the thought struck me that I had kinda prescribed the obvious stuff and had omitted references to moments that might be less obvious.

I still get chills watching this freekick. I came pretty damn close to breaking down when it hit the net on Monday June 1st 2015.

I'll never forget it. The relief felt will never be matched by another sport event.

    https://streamable.com/cqzw

For those who don't know the backstory: We were minutes away from being relegated for the first time. The first leg at home ended 1-1 so KSC were 2-1 up on aggregate. We had hit the post twice in the final 15 minutes and our fullback had somehow sliced a shot from 2m wide when it was easier to score. All hope was lost, but Diaz' freekick in injury time saved us and forced extra time. We scored again after 115' to win 3-2 on aggregate.

Limerick away to Sligo on the final day of the 2015 season. One of the best away days I ever experienced, was one of the worst seasons ever being stuck at the bottom of table all season and that run at the end of the season finishing with a win at Sligo to finally move off the bottom of the table and give ourselves a chance to stay up in the play-off.

Shaun Kelly's thunderbàstard of a goal vs Harps in the first leg of the play-off. The atmosphere that night was something else and when he scored that belter of a goal the crowd exploded with excitement and thought the roof of the stand was gonna come off.

To go from the excitement of those two nights to losing in the play-off in the second and getting relegated up in Harps was soul crushing. Talk about a week of extreme highs to the extreme low. Can't beat the highs and lows of live football.

See's goal in Lansdowne last November would be the same for me. Standing right behind the goal, stoppage time of extra time, teams deadlocked. The ball just rolled and rolled. Genuinely thought it was going to go just wide. To see it hit the net was just pure ecstasy. Three seasons of being second best and near misses, including just a few weeks beforehand in Oriel Park, all gone with a moment of joy. I've never celebrated a goal so much.

Cummins in Tolka in 2011 probably a close second. Very similar circumstances and similar stoppage time winner to win the league. Derek O'Brien's cross seemed to hang in the air for an eternity before it met Cummins' head.

McAteer vs Netherlands. Being there with a friend cos his dad couldn't go, expected little out of it. When Finnan hit that cross I swear it all went in slow motion. The bulge of the net and the noise in the place, felt like the west stand was coming down. For Netherlands to end up with so many forwards on the pitch but still couldn't do it. Ended with 10 men too!

99 FA Cup, Giggs goal Vs Arsenal
99 CL Final, the last 3 minutes can all count as a single moment, right?
    Brady against France
    Long against germany

Of course the Japan Korea WC had loads of great ones, but I was working in a bar through the whole thing so couldn't really fully go mental. 90 and 94 I'd be lying if I said I could fully remember the moments as I was pretty young. I remember the events, but it's more of a false memory now that I've seen them all so many times.

Barcelona's 2-0 win over Man United in 2009 and Barca's treble win I also loved Barcelona's 6-2 drubbing of Madrid at the Bernabeu that year. Messi, Iniesta and Xavi were truly at the peak of their powers that season and I don't think we'll see a team that great for generations to come.

    FA Cup Semi-Final 1999...Junction Bar...Waterford..place is packed...mostly Arsenal fans and ABU's.
Electric atmosphere like none I've experienced in a pub watching a game. A saved penalty and then
extra time and then Giggs picked up a stray pass and scored that goal.

Honourable mentions there are many but that for me was the single best moment I've seen.

Oh how the christ did I forget John O'Shea scoring in the 90th minute into the Kop in 2007. Was sitting in a massive Liverpool bar, maybe only 3 United fans and we had been getting dogs abuse all afternoon. When John scored the goal that essentially sealed the title the few of us went totally berserk. Great times!!

Macheda being the great striker of all time for two games was great too. Same pub for those games.

Similar one to that for me...Kevin McHugh's 95th minute equaliser for Harps in the Brandywell in the promotion/relegation playoff in 2003 - the 30 seconds after that goal were probably the happiest I've ever been after a goal. Of course we lost AET.

It's not the most left-field of choices, but Shane Long against Germany was pure euphoric stuff. I still get chills thinking about that split second just before he hit it, when I was dying inside thinking he was going to do it - and then he did it: absolutely buried it - SHAYYYNEE LONG.

The goal was an absolute mutt in loads of ways: pure route one, defensive error, kinda lucky first touch by Long, but that finish was so true and unstoppable that I honestly think it's a beautiful goal. And even though the game wasn't over, I had this gut feeling that it was and the lads were going to get their just reward for once. They'd rode their punches in that game and Germany were very wasteful but Ireland had worked bloody hard, and had doggedly given it everything. And that crazy elation everywhere afterwards, when Long gave the best post-match interview ever and spoke to and for all of us, by just saying YEEEEESSSSSS. What a brilliant night that was. Only football could have done that, never mind rugby and it's hyped up nonsense.

On a more down to earth level, a personal fond memory is the time I saw a Galway United player blast a free kick so far wide that the ball flew into the opening of the chip van that was off and to the side of the pitch. Afterwards, the sight of an angry fist being shook in anger from the van towards the pitch was more truly satisfying than a outrageous overhead kick from fifty yards. If there was any justice the ref should have immediately awarded Galway a goal for services to comedy.

I also immensely enjoyed Suarez biting Chellini in the last world cup. It was just too crazy, you had to laugh...Again?...He's bitten someone...Again?

I remember watching that McCourt goal on good ol' Eircom League Weekly back in the day. Such raw quality: The Bray defence was literally left with a choice between either tackling thin air or each other. Love the reaction of his teammate when the ball goes in: hands on head in disbelief.

Here's McCourt's equally outrageous first goal from the same game:

Tough call between the two in terms of which is better. I'd like to think he meant that backheel during the build up for the first goal, and such a sweet, sweet finish with the outside of the boot.

He was just dancing to a different tune to everyone else on the pitch that day. Pure genius.

    Italia '90.

I feel blessed to have been around and at an age (18) that I could enjoy it to the full.

I don't think there will ever be anything like it again.

Personally speaking Brady's goal v Italy was "mhhh" whereas Quinn's v Holland is just eched in my memory.

Maybe it's cos I'm getting older.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 88 ✭✭looie

I felt the same about Brady's goal, probably down to the fact that Italy didn't give a hoot that day and didn't field their strongest team. McAteer vs Holland and Keane vs Germany still gives me goosebumps. Rarely watch any Ireland games these days but Long comforting Coleman after that horrific break is up there with the rest.

My fav moment has to be being at Wembley for the Cup Final in '85, we were right at the top behind the goal when Whiteside scored, the place went nuts, so overcrowded in there, me and my dad were hanging off the girders while my grandad was in the mix below, what a kip of a venue, surprised nobody was ever seriously hurt in there

Jan 87, Rovers 3-2 Bohs, 2-1 down with a few minutes to go, 2 free kicks later, 3-2 & madness in the shed.

First derby v bohs in Tallaght, I had just caught my breath after the celebrations for the equaliser & the winner nearly killed me...

Shane Robinsons screamer of a late winner in a 3-2 win v pats at Richmond... mad celebrations (cant remember the year) again, nearly passed out through over celebration.

O'Donnells Peno away to Partizan... I actually didnt scream, shout or react in any outward way, I was that overwhelmed I simply sat down & concentrated on breathing until I could organise my brain into something that could function.

Andy Mylers volley away to Limerick ina 2-0 in 2006 when we won the first division, he chested it down & volleyed it from just inside the touchline in front of us & we watched it sail into the far top corner, i just turned & ran into the car park screaming wildly...

I'm sure theres loads more but they're the ones that spring to mind.

Stuttgart '88 when Houghton stuck the ball in the England net - or since it was still so early in the game, more-like, the final whistle was THEE moment!

I had a fairly distant interest in sport at the time but the English media wound me up bigtime before that game as they were so cocky...so I got wound up for that game and my passion for the sport really started that day!
