Just picked up an Alcatel Pop 4 to use as a spare phone. Only €50 (was €100) from Tesco mobile and is unlocked. It's obviously not flagship quality but seems very good for the price - 5 inch 720p screen which would be very rare at this price point. Only 8gb but supports microSD. Needless to say camera is a bit sh*t!

Picked one up yesterday in Jervis street. Memory is a bit tight 5gb used with OS and uninstallable alcatel apps (can take a microSD though) but grand as a spare phone. Not sure if all Tesco mobile phones are unlocked - the original Moto G I bought years ago wasn't.

    Gonna try Jervis now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,522 ✭✭✭digitaldr

You've actually got to go customer services in Tesco store in the basement rather than the kiosk. They didn't have in the drawer under the till - she had to call the guy who deals with mobiles.

Lots of pop 4 plus and very rude staff in the stores I've been to so far just want a cheap phone for pokemon go.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 423 ✭✭cathalj

An agent on Tesco mobile live-chat told me all phones sold by them are locked to their network. Best check this out before buying if you plan on using another Sim.

    How do you find it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,282 ✭✭✭✭RobbingBandit

Yeah it's a very good phone for the price I've been using an Alcatel pixi 4 for the past 15 months got if on special too in hmv when they closed this one is much better so far very happy with purchase. Stuck a meteor sim in it no prob too so both Vodafone and Meteor confirmation.

Somebody went blah about the camera? Is it 6.8mp on one of them? which dosn't seem so bad so why the blah?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,680 ✭✭✭✭TheDriver

The sensor is probably low grade. Its not just MP that you need to look at

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,282 ✭✭✭✭RobbingBandit

The model is 5051x if anyone wants to look up the specs, it's a good phone for the price IMO.

€50 is OK but the POP4 is an awful phone. Big time lag on screen.

Got one at the weekend. Did anyone else's come with a Tesco sim and number? Mine is for a present so didn't want to set it up but it's for someone in Vodafone. I know previous posts said theirs was unlocked.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,522 ✭✭✭digitaldr

They all come with a Tesco SIM so should be fine.

    Thanks OP.

One tip the screen is extremely bright and sharp even on 25% to conserve your battery power.

I needed a replacement due to a mishap with my Nexus 5X last week....

Just received my POP 4.....great value, seems decent enough for whatsapp & phonecalls etc. Wont be doing any on-the-fly video editing, but a nice phone as a burner, while I await the Pixel 2 or Essential Phone.

    Would recommend for this price.

It's ok for an emergency, slow phone, memory fills up with a couple of apps, constantly have to clear storage.

I can't use mobile data for some reason with Vodafone, anyone else?

Happened mine too initially, until I updated the APN.....didnt have to do that for a long time with a smart phone. 4G working fine now.

If you format the SD card as internal memory it should resolve this problem (a bit). But yeah, I'd love to root it and remove the crapware / google apps.

Are you aware of any custom ROMs?

None so far unfortunately. I tried a quick search on XDA but didn't find anything. Am hesitant to use those "root" apps.

And a youtube search just brings back a load of Spanish results!

Specifically, I just added an APN....

    APN: live.vodafone.ie
    Username: dublin
    Password: dublin

    I didnt change anything else....

Be sure to insert a blank SD card and choose "Internal Storage" when it picks it up. If you don't see the message, then you can go in to Settings - Storage and do it there.
