Killester United v Galway United, Haddon Park, 2.00 pm

Dundalk v Derry City, Oriel Park, 6.30pm

The magic of the FAI cup picks up this weekend with the Second round. 16 matches spread over the three days. No replays in this round this year straight to extra time and penalties if there is a draw after 90 minutes. With at least two of the top six eliminated this weekend, there is plenty up for grabs.

Tie of the round is Dundalk vs Derry on Sunday in Oriel. With Derry in fine form with 4 wins in the last 5 and Dundalk having 2 consective 3-0 wins after 2 shaky results against Shams and Sligo this is a very tough match to call. Home advantage may sway it for Dundalk but Derry did draw in Oriel earlier this season. Match could easily go to penalties

Bray Wanderers vs Cork is another match between two of the top six. With Cork's unassailable lead in the League this represent a great chance for Cork to complete the double. However they have appeared slightly shakier since the loss of Maguire and O'Connor but they should still have enough to get past a Bray side who have struggled the end of May.

The final all premier division tie is between Finn Harps and Bohemians. With Bohs slight favourites although apart from a blip against Galway, Harps have been exceeding expectations this season. Four premier divison sides face non-league opposition with Shamrock Rovers, St Pats, Galway and Drogheda all expected to go through although Drogheda in particular could face a stiff challenge from Kilkenny side Evergreen. While Limerick and Sligo face first division opposition in Cobh Ramblers and Longford Town respectively.

With three all non-league matches we are guaranteed at least least 3 non-league teams. Chances of a shock lie in the two non-league teams against First Divison sides with Crumlin away to Wexford and Ballincollig welcoming Athlone to Cork.

Any radio streams to matches post them here please and if you are going to a FAI cup match this weekend, Enjoy It!

Why the change in the replay situation this year?

    A knee jerk reaction maybe.

A reaction to the fixture pileup last year?

Dundalk were up to their tonsils in matches last year and (natch) drew with Derry in the cup match.

You are probably correct, but It must have been agreed before the season started?

Come on shels, number 11 this is our year to slip under the radar!

We've put in a few very good performances in the last month or two but we are woefully inconsistent. Waterford away is a tough one but play like we did in the league fixture last month and there's a chance.

I am good with cup replays being axed. Its not like in the UK where they can be money spinning for anyone. They are more of a drain on already stretched resources on most clubs I would say.

AFAIK, its only this round and the next. QF and SF will have replays alright.

Possibly because all the rounds are close together. If this round was in June like last year, you could afford replays..

    Plus the drama I suppose.

Anyone getting that cup fever just yet? I know the "real" football is back tonight , but cup magic is cup magic. The removal of replays in the early rounds is a good shout, straight to extra time and penalties.

Bohs: We're away to Finn Harps tonight. Feel we could turn them over, we're on a good run and I feel we have the ability to play better football than Harps. Bitch of a trip though.

Anyone else? What are your thoughts on your own team's draw?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,261 ✭✭✭joeysoap

Bray players have a chance to put themselves into the window tonight. Nobody seriously believes their better players are going to re sign for next year. Wouldn't be surprised if it went to ET and pens.

Derry missing Curtis on Sunday but Derry are on fire so another cracker in store. Expect this one to go to ET as well.

Harps away is a really tough one. They seem to be missing a good few players though so hopefully we can take the win.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Shock result down in Waterford especially with Shels having been reduced to 10 men. Wexford apparently missed two penalties against Crumlin who for the second year in a row get past LOI opposition.

Extra time In the Harps-Bohs match. Harps scored an injury time penalty to equalise.

No real enthusiasm yet for the cup, sort of tie and game that is really a no win. Rovers are through that's about all you could say.

That's an awful long journey back from Donegal after coming from behind and getting to injury time...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,254 ✭✭✭overshoot

Lads I may have had a few to settle myself after that game but that was a proper cup game in Finn Park, end to end all game. After last weeks shambles hadn't much enthusiasm but christ!
We basically played aet with10 men as after Dsane scored a peach of a free he was crocked but gave what he could. Under the cosh for the last 20. Nothing between the 2 but it's the cup and home advantage probably counted. McAleer made a huge impact when he came on. We were going nowhere at the death til he picked it up, must have bet 3 before he was felled in the box.
Credit to bohs (and their fans) some match!

Yeah, Wexford missed 2 pens, one of which presented the taker with a tap in rebound, which the keeper got up to save. Hit the crossbar a few times too. Crumlin had 1 attempt at goal in the 2nd half and scored from it.

Crumlin are pre-season and were missing a few players. They would have no bother being competitive in the 1st Division, just like a few other Junior clubs

F*ck me we are seriously sh*t.

    Cobh Wanderers 3 v 0 Killarney Celtic
    Cobh Ramblers 0 v 3 Limerick
    Ballincollig 0 v 5 Athlone Town
    Bangor Celtic 3 v 2 Everton
    Bray Wanderers 0 v 1 Cork City
Longford Town 4 v 2 Sligo Rovers AET

Big shock in Longford with Sligo being dumped out after extra time. Cork missed a penalty but still went through against Bray. Big win for Athlone in Cork.

While Crumlin beating Wexford is probably the shock of the round, I'm not that surprised. I'm more surprised by Shels beating Waterford 3-0 to be honest.

Longford beating Sligo and scoring twice in extra-time is a fairly big upset while I'm just happy that Limerick had no issues away to Cobh Ramblers which is a tricky spot to go to, especially with it being the site of our only league loss last season.

All set up for Cork City to be drawn away to Harps next round.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 15,721 Mod ✭✭✭✭dfx-

Some meltdown by Everton, 0-2 up with 8 minutes to go. Lose 3-2 and a flurry of red/yellow cards.

How many games has Lyttle been in charge now? Is there any sign of encouragement even...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,261 ✭✭✭joeysoap

Bray season now all but finished, back to attendances of under 500. The cup could possibly have salvaged the season for them.

    Bluebell United 3-0 Sheriff YC
    Portmarnock 0-2 St Patrick's
    Evergreen 0-4 Drogheda United
Killester 3-3 Galway Galway through on penalties
    Dundalk 4-0 Derry

Surprised how comfortable Dundalk defeated Derry. We weren't massively impressive against Portmarnock but at least we are through to the next round.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,974 ✭✭✭✭Gavin "shels"

Not surprised by Crumlin Utd tbh, majority of their players are on par with LoI and/or ex-LoI who can't commit to the travelling of the 1st Div. Likewise with Bluebell.

Excellent result for us down in Waterford with 10 men and a Dean Delany peno save also.

Crumlin had the quality, but you could tell they were still pre-season. We owned the 2nd half, but were very wasteful. At full fitness, Crumlin would be a strong side alright

Killester were magnificent against Galway yesterday.

First game of their season and to go 120 minutes against a Premier Division side was fantastic, you wouldn't of begrudged them if they won the shootout!

Make no mistake this was a full blown cup match. True Dundalk might have been 3 up before half time but Derry were creating chances too and overall I'd say Dundalk were happy enough to be leading at the break. Derry could and possibly should have scored just after half time and it was ding ding until the second goal arrived. Which was a pen from a corner which Gartlan got a head to (surprise).
After that Derry threw everything into the match and only for a outstanding last ditch tackle from Vemmelund and a goal line clearance Derry would certainly have scored. In between Doherty pulled of one of the saves of the season from Benson. It could easily have been more then four but it could easily have been more than nil. The three ex Derry players were outstanding for Dundalk.

Duffy really deserved his goal. I think it's fair to say the team have finally gelled. Some excellent football been played lately. Our form since the 3-0 defeat to Cork back in early June has been excellent in fairness. Bar the loss to Shamrock Rovers and a patchy display against Sligo we've been very good. We're definitely going to win the cup this year.

Draw for the next round of the cup was made earlier tonight.

    Shelbourne vs Shamrock Rovers
    Bangor Celtic vs Longford Town
St. Patrick's Athletic vs Galway United
    Cork City vs Athlone Town
    Limerick vs Finn Harps
    Bluebell Utd vs Cabinteely
    Drogheda Utd vs Cobh Wanderers
    Crumlin Utd vs Dundalk

Tough enough draw for us but at least its a home draw. Good draws for Dundalk and Cork, both should be expected to go through fairly comfortably.Old school Dublin Derby between Shelbourne and Shamrock Rovers. Good chance for either Bluebell or Cabinteely to get to the quarter finals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,261 ✭✭✭joeysoap

Bluebell only side to get two home draws and Athlone only side to get two away draws?

Banging also two home draws. That's both Crumlin sides drawn at home next round.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,090 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Finn Harps has been a dodgy fixture for Limerick since the play offs but at least it's at home and no traveling. Also we'll play each other in the cup followed by playing again in the league a week later.

What sort of attendances are Shels getting this year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 668 ✭✭✭Pat D. Almighty

Only saw a brief clip of Jordi Balk against Portmarnock this evening, but he made a topclass interception while chasing back. Easily done against the likes of a LSL team, however, he's been top quality against every other team I've seen him play in the flesh. Great to see someone from a decent "lower" division for a change, but is he just here to put himelf in the shop window for a move to England? I think St. Pat's will be lucky to hold on to him.

It sounds flippant but more than 500. Its the noise in the ground that's more noticably missed rather than the numbers. We were getting about 1000 through the gate for games in the premier a few years back.

    Friday 25th August
    Bluebell United vs Cabinteely 19:00
Shelbourne vs Shamrock Rovers 19:45 Tolka Park
Bangor Celtic vs Longford Town 19:45 Iveagh Grounds
St Patrick's Athletic vs Galway United 19:45 Richmond Park
Cork City vs Athlone Town 19:45 Turners Cross
Drogheda United vs Cobh Wanderers 19:45 United Park
    Saturday 26th August
Crumlin United vs Dundalk FC 16:00 Iveagh Grounds
Limerick FC vs Finn Harps 18:30 Markets Field

Round of 16 starts tonight with 6 matches and 2 tomorrow. One all premier division match tonight in Richmond Park where St Pats play Galway. Both teams have shown improved form in the last few matches but home advantage might be enough for us to go through. It will be a tough match though. Shelbourne vs Rovers is the other big match tonight. Its hard to see Shels really challenging Rovers tonight and I expect Rovers to win. Cork and Drogheda should have little problem in their matches tonight. Longford should also get past Bangor Celtic. Bluebell vs Cabinteely is an interesting tie. Bluebell would be strong for a non-league side especially with the likes of Keith Fahey playing for them. Could be the main opportunity for a non-league team to get into the quarter finals.

In tomorrow's matches Dundalk should get past Crumlin with relative ease with their recent impressive form. Limerick vs Harps is also a tough one to predict. Up until last weekend Limerick's form was dire but they managed to beat Bohs and they have home advantage. Harps have lost their last two and have played an extra match this week but they do have some quality players. Think Limerick might just have enough to go through.

    Bluebell, Bangor, Shels treble :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,008 ✭✭✭kksaints

    Bluebell 1-0 Cabinteely
    Bangor Celtic 0-1 Longford
    Cork City 7-0 Athlone
    Drogheda 5-1 Cobh Wanderers
    St Pats 0-2 Galway
    Shelbourne 0-3 Shamrock Rovers

Disappointing loss for us. Didnt create enough in the second half to get back into the match. Cork and Drogheda easy winners as were Shams. Longford get into the quarters and non-league Bluebell beat Cabinteely to go through.
