Is there a chance a paid Business Class ticket can be downgraded, at all?

Highly unlikely unless the aircraft goes tech.

or swapped for an aircraft with a different layout, for example, at the last minute

just bring a book or snooze and sit down , whatever the experience in first class its hardly worthwhile getting all het up about and ' bidding for a seat ',who's got time for all that crap for a few hrs flight ??

Nothing. Really the dress code adhering upgradees are likely to be the best dressed due to the normal attire of your average tech worker

Any tech workers I know dress in ill-fitting suits, wear converse and have manky hair and dirty beards.

Surely they wont refuse you entry to Business Class if you are wearing trainers and casual clothes, jeans etc?? That seems to be what people here are implying..

    No they won't.

With some airlines it might increase your chances of an upgrade if you dress smart but I would imagine it goes pretty much by status/fare bucket and upgrades only in the case of an overbook.

I've never been downgraded from business/first even though I on occasion have looked a right state.

Was ushered through Mexico City one evening to a Lufthansa First Class seat in old Converse and some Jack & Jones shorts. They don't care. You pay your money, you get your choice.

No - once you pay its fine. On LAX/SFO its likely the entire paid J class cabin will be dressed like that.

You are unlikely to get an upgrade in casual clothes, unless you have top-level status/are known to staff/etc

That was my point. Suits is a stretch, really. Jeans, tshirts, skate shoes, laptop bag that cost more than the rest together.

Well I just put in a bid of 550euros for the return leg of my Dublin to Boston flight mid-September. I don't think I have a hope to be honest as the business class prices, when I checked on the Aer Lingus website, are coming in much more expensive so it will be a miracle but I wasn't willing to pay any more. Flights to and from Boston seem to be more expensive than other cities.

550 LOL Get 2 return tickets to Boston from Dublin with Norwegian for that!!! And its a short flight just a little bit past a canarias flight.
I suppose if you have cash to trow around its ok for a extra sandwich a scoul look from the beautiful ;) attendants .
Hope your flight dont get cancelled ...........................lol

You get slightly more than a extra sandwich for Business Class to/from the states. While I personally wouldn't pay €550 for an upgrade, and I presume from your post you wouldn't either it doesn't mean you should scoff.

There are people would would pay multiples of that for Business Class instead of economy and shock horror, people might value an upgrade differently to what you do.

Well that's your opinion. Business Class is a different kind of luxury, and if I'm lucky I may get to enjoy the perks as I cross over. I much prefer to get upgraded on the way home rather than on the way over. And anyway, it probably wont even happen because I don't think it will be accepted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,182 ✭✭✭killbillvol2

People who scoff at business Class have obviously never tried it. 550 may or may not be enough but it has a chance. There are threads on FlyerTalk for all the airlines with upgrade bidding but very little data to go on for Aer Lingus. Good luck!

I fly to the states quite regularly in business. And you're right on the way home it's nicer as you can sleep and arrive rested and jet lag shouldn't be too much of an issue.

However if I was doing it myself and my partner it's much better to have the outbound leg. You get to savour all the pampering :).

If your flight is mid-week your chances will be higher me thinks.

Yup. I pay the extra to have a flexible schedule. I'm quite often cancelling my plans up to 24 hours before the plane leaves the tarmac. The business tickets allows me to do this a lot better along with arriving fresher, not worrying about check-in, running to grab a seat, baggage limitations, skipping long security lines etc etc.

This might be a bit gross but every time I travel economy by the time I sit in the seat, I'm sweating buckets due to stressing about time, when I fly business I never stress one bit.

What day you flying back? If it's Thursday or Friday you don't have a great chance regardless of what you bid. Midweek or Saturday you will probably get it.

What do you get on Business class to/from the states? Genuine question as attempting to blag an upgrade or bidding for one is something that's never even occurred to me.

Not at all bitter...why would you even think that. LOL. Im young and wouldnt waist my hard earned money on something thats not worth it for me.
I know people that have gone in it (aer fungus) and they told me its rubbish. Old airplanes, dirty floor, crumbs everywhere. Ife constantly breaking down, call ding dongs constantly ringing. wifi useless.
There idea of the food was ok but then its a Bus not a restaurant.
Overall its higher class of economy not the same business area as big airlines. Now emirates is luxury go try them.........

I just want cheap fares for myself now if i went on a longhaul flight id like to try a proper business area. Boston is not long flight at all but if you can throw away 3000 then do it

Im flying back home Friday night, arriving in Dublin Saturday morning. Are Thursday and Friday evenings on this route known to be busy, have you flown it? I wont be that disappointed if I'm rejected, I have a fairly decent seat in economy anyway. I don't really expect to get it, but I wasn't willing to go higher than 550.

Yeah i've flown it lots for work and Thurs/Fri night would be generally busy with business travellers heading home. It's not a bad flight in economy if you don't get it.

I'm 21 and i've flown Business Class and paid for it with my own money. I don't regret it, I think it can be a great thing if you can get a decent price.

Infact, i'm planning on heading to California next summer and will be looking to fly Business Class return. If I can get a price of around £1200-1300 I will book it.

*Don't ever pay 3000 for a return Business Class ticket to Boston, you are being ripped off. Ideally a Business Class ticket will run around 1000 to 1800 return*

I think that not because of what you're saying but how you're putting it.. if you don't like something then just don't buy/use it!! You're trying to dis something you don't know much about and don't have much experience with. If people want to waste their money( in your opinion) that's their business.

@mikel97, Must be someone else's 330s. Not the (EI) ones I work on. When we send them out, they are clean and fit for purpose and the IFE fit is modern and works very, very well. We do take genuine pride in our work and we give every turnaround a good workout.... Some of the old Panasonic IFE kit was rubbish but most of that is gone. The WiFi is for the most part, reliable. As for crumbs and food droppings, well, some people regard aircraft as mobile landfills and believe that random scattering of food and plastic waste is the norm. We would routinely change up to a dozen seat covers per turnaround on the 330s because people think that seat covers magically absorb soft drinks/water/chocolate/mashed-in sweets/body fluids. For info, all of our fleet get deep cleaned inside and out about every 6 to 8 weeks, which includes lots of carpet replacement.A lot of airlines don't deep clean until the season is over or a C-Check is due...as for getting upgrades, the cabin crew and pilots are the acknowledged masters of doing that so ask them.

Not sure if you mean just on transatlantic flights but I can tell you from experience that's not true on European flights

When I worked there they would have 108% of the seats available for sale transatlantic in economy.

What people don't understand or know about is the amount of people who don't turn up. There will always be a percentage who fail to attend by virtue of the fact that they are late/lost/misconnected,etc and they may be in the airport, frantically trying to get to the aircraft.....a high percentage are corporate or business customers who simply aren't travelling that day and their company has not cancelled the booking. Companies used to buy a chunk of tickets each January and use them as they needed and often they would be forgotten/plans were changed, etc. Nowadays, flights are usually full and overbooking means the airline takes a hit as it tries to accommodate the passengers who turn up, expecting a seat, to find the aircraft jammed to the door.

Business class is not for everyone and that's perfectly fine. What I don't get is the need to specifically come on to aviation board, find a thread like this and then talk about stupid it is.

I don't get why people pay huge monthly rates for sky sports or why they need to go drinking every weekend and piss €100 up against the wall!! There are so many things that people waste their money on but there is no need to take the time out to berate others.
