    Quite a few artists who would tick this cathal mcloughlin,fergal sharkey,maria mckee etc but none tie in with pic

    I also assumed it was linkin park as I recognised him, but some of the last few have been vague or I simply don't know any of the bands (particularly the Irish ones)

    They do play some rock. I'd describe them as alternative.

    Alternative in usa meant "arty"..e.g Talking heads, The cars Blondie etc...

    Not The Tubes or Devo.

    This band haven't sold that many albums, but they're not unknown; they have a cult following, and have some links to the likes of Thurston Moore and Kurt Cobain.

    Just look at the picture and think about that Linkin Park guy.

    No idea how it links to the picture, but Velvet Underground were a pretty massive influence on the alt rock/punk eras and 70's would be thereabouts their time, having been described as a band that didnt sell a lot of albums, but everyone that bought one started a band.

    Yeah Half Japanese! I figured people knew Mike Shinoda was half-japanese and would know the band but I made the original visual clue too hard.
