    Cheers OP. Reserved one.

Have had a standard maglite for 10 years now and its still running strong with the same bulb.

Brilliant torches and amazing bargain alert OP.

    Thanks!

Similar. My dad has one that he got in the states in '99 (one of the big D cell ones)

It's built so strong it could be used as a club without problems. Well worth the money.

Is the small one "Maglite Solitaire 3AAA Black Torch" any use?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 869 ✭✭✭mikeybrennan

Are the 3 euro ones led?

Pretty good. Had one on my keychain for years before phones made them redundant.

No. Old school bulbs. I used to have one, they were annoying as the bulbs went quickly. I think the best ones here are the LED ones.

I have this one, and it's quite good. Although you need to fiddle with the spring on the battery compartment opening to make the light not flicker.

    http://www.halfords.ie/camping-leisure/camping/camping-cooking-equipment/maglite-solitaire-led-torch

This one could be worth a punt, but it is a little large:

    http://www.halfords.ie/camping-leisure/camping/camping-cooking-equipment/mini-maglite-aaa-led-torch

The reviewer of this one complains of a similar issue I had with the one above. It is possible to fix, but maybe it's a deal breaker for some.

Wouldn't touch anything that isn't using a LED bulb.

FYI, the click and collect system that Halfords have isn't accurate.

It will say things that are in stock in your chosen store that aren't, they end up calling you later on to let you know

Why and what would you recommend instead then?

An LED bulb will last for 1000's of hours of use. They are brighter and use less power. There is no good reason to use no-LEDs for torches. Just get the LED version here, or other torches that have LED bulbs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 891 ✭✭✭rejkin

FYI, I just rang the Tallaght branch which I had reserved some torches from and they said they don't have any stock and haven't for weeks.
They said the reserve system doesn't actually work and there is no way to tell if there is stock in a store unless you ring them.
They also said they have 5 reserves on the system when they never should have.

I also rang the Naas branch and they said all stock has been reserved but even then they don't have enough.

    What a load of bull.

I''ll be sending in a complaint to Halfords on that.

As mentioned using LED with typically save you 80-90% of energy costs, it can also produce a whiter (cooler) type of white light if desired.

Anyone still using 80-100w incandescent bulbs in their homes when a 12w LED will produce the same amount of light, needs their heads checked.

These LED bulbs are getting cheaper all the time, usually less than 5notes anyway. There is also 'warm white' colour versions available.

I got the newer 272 lumen one, even if it was the older one it's still a really good bargain.

Got call from Tallaght yesterday to say not to bother. Online system/real stock f*ck up, coupled with people ordering dozens of the things. 3/4 items missed.

The 4th I ordered is via Carrickmines. Will be up that way this morning.

It's bizarre that the halfords system is as bad as it is. I've been caught with it before. In the modern retail environment, it's crazy they can't have a workable system.

For anyone who manages to avail of the ba, you can't go wrong with maglites. Have one in my fishing jacket that I own for about the last ten years. Has gotten soaked, battered, etc but still working away.

The incandescent maglites are not worth a damn, they're very dim relative to a modern LED torch. And they're inefficient so despite putting out very few lumens they eat batteries. I'm surprised they still sell them.

This guy puts out 135LM on a single AAA, legit CREE emitter, TIR lens, 3 output levels. Puts any of the small Maglites to shame.

Picked up the reserved led pocket maglite in Carrickmines.

(For anyone truly desperate, there are display torches on the Maglite stand in Carrickmines. No accessories etc, but you may try to convince the manager to sell them to you)

The one I picked up for €9 was the maglite pro led which puts out 272 lumens plus has a 10 year warranty. I agree that the incandescent ones are not worth purchasing.

    Nice one

Spotted this BA yesterday. Tried to ignore it. Came back in today. Ordered two.

I now own seven Maglites. I didn't need more maglites. But now I have two more...

    Yep, that's good value indeed.

I use Convoy S2+ which can be had for around a tenner and put out ~800 Lumens.

do you have to buy batteries and charger for that?

Yes, it takes 1x 18650 cell (same cells used in many e-cigarettes).

Cell are around €5, charger about €5. Once you get basics though you'll be compatible with a huge range of good torches. Most of the popular torches nowadays use li-ions because they are higher voltage and capacity than a AA. I can do a more detailed recommendation if you want.

Look for XML - T6 torches from aliexpress or somewhere. Great LEDs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,960 ✭✭✭✭Discodog

Can you only collect from store ? I can't see any option to have it posted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 268 ✭✭rebelbmx

    Collect from store only.

If you are averse to 18650s then here's a nice 2xAA light. 200 Lumen, muti-mode, low battery LED. The difference between the two models is the tint of the light, the cheaper one is cool white, the more expensive one is neutral white.

The 281 Lumen Maglite AA is only £20 on ebay.

I would rather trust their build quality & specification accuracy

Most flashlight enthusiasts don't really bother with Maglite. They have the name recognition but there's nothing special about their build quality or specs. That particular model will get max lumens for a few seconds and very quickly step down to 60%.

There's nothing wrong with them and you'll be perfectly happy with it. It'll do the job fine. But £20 for a basic single-mode twisty 2xAA is a bit much. That Zanflare at €8.60 is a better flashlight in most regards. If you want a cheap 2xAA that's what I would get.

If you're spending €20 you can easily get a Convoy S2+ incl battery charger. I have a whole bunch of Maglites and the Convoy is on another level.

There seems to be a big problem in not buying a fake. So many cheap chinese copies.

And people wonder why readers on here get frustrated when there's none of something left. Some people have no restraint.

Two different ones that I didn't have before.

    So...
One AAA in the boot of the car.
    One AA in the glovebox.
One old incandescent I converted to red light LED for astronomy.
One in the kitchen in case of power cuts.
One old AA I leave in the shed, because it's handy to have a torch in the shed.

One new one that'll live on my keyring.
One AA LED I bought because I felt like it.

    Get over yourself?

I got 1. 1 of the 4 different ones I ordered. The staff in Tallaght said that there were orders for dozens of them. As in a commercial quantity of someone ordering to resell them. Have a go at them, not those on here that ordered different ones for different tasks and would have made use of them.

Fakes tend to be a problem with brands like ultrafire, Lenser etc. And fake emitters are certainly a problem with no-name flashlights on Aliexpress.

The 'good' Chinese brands use legit Cree and Nichia emitters. And nobody is going to bother faking a torch like the Zanflare above due to the already competitive price and high build quality. The margin just isn't there for the fakers who are more attracted to overpriced western brands.

If you are really worried about fakes you can buy a Convoy torch direct from the manufacturer. It will be more expensive than via gearbest but you are buying direct from the guy who makes them, you can customize everything, tint, power-level, modes. It's a small company, the guy (Simon) is very well known on flashlight forums. I highly recommend it.

I bought 2 Maglites, 1 AAA LED solitaire & 1 2D cell Xenon, 2 different torches for different applications ;)

Has anyone upgraded a 2D Maglite to LED ? I'm considering this replacement for the xenon bulb http://www.ebay.ie/itm/MAGLITE-LED-UPGRADE-BULB-Cree-TTS-Conversion-2D-2C-Cell-Torch-Flashlight-/282391333335?clk_rvr_id=1276886030162&rmvSB=true

Thanks. I am looking for a small 2 AA size, high output, long throw & ideally focusable. I would also prefer non rechargeable.

Useless for clubbing trespassers! :) Note they only use one AAA battery, not the 3 suggested by the name

They are small enough to fit on your key ring, although with most people having a light on their phones these days, it isn't as useful. I found that the black paint tended to get chipped when on the key ring - get it in a silver / natural finish if possible.

Just picked picked up a 2aaa led pen maglite. €4.50 with my axa card. They always look at me like 'why are you bothering its only a few cents', but better in my pocket than their till.

Anyway, very happy with the torch, only had incandescent maglites up to this, strongly thinking of getting a conversion kit for my 4D cell now
