Was in Manorhamilton mart yesterday and one of the tanglers was saying that he 'heard' it's going opening up in a few weeks for lighter lambs.

He had very sketchy details!....but it would be a help if it came...what/where did you hear about it?

Heard there going to be collecting for EID Muslim festival.

Ram lambs 40 kilos up to 50.

Heard a price 2.2 a kilo something similar to this time last year.

Unfortunately I don't think that's true. Eid is the festival at the end of Ramadan and Ramadan was in May this year. I think it's a bit soon for next years festival too.

Are there two big festivals that create demand or just one ? Remember lads ringing around this time last year looking for ram lambs ( so I thought two) ? I know the dates move each year.

I've just googled it and apparently you're right there is eid al-adha at the end of august though that seems to move too so cattle man could be right.

I think Ramadan keeps moving earlier in the year each year so I think it was closer round now last year.

Just as well these festivals create the demand, because was fair disappointed with the Easter demand this year.

just 1 point the earlier that ramadan moves the demand will be a little less

Easter lamb is finished the factories saw to that...no one around here doing it anymore. Between using hoggets or imported UK lambs they killed the trade. One good thing about Brexit might see factories change their tune in relation to importation of lamb.

some factories were worse then others in recent times. Hard to have any respect for the ones that did it most.

How did you find them last year razor ?

Were you happy with weights etc ?

No problems, paid by electronic transfer and lambs were weighed on digital scales full as ticks in the evening time

Good to here. I'm aiming to get a lot of my ram lambs away on it over next two weeks.

I see they wont take lambs that dont have tails, that will surely catch a lot of lads

Heard the quarantine period is 21 days, would they lose much weight?
Wonder would they look to export for Ramadan or would the lambs be too soft

Not sure what you mean. The lambs aren't closed up for 21 days. You just can't buy other sheep in for 21 days or even bring sheep to mart and bring home unsold

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,004 ✭✭✭Green farmer

How soon after you hand the sheep over are they killed ? Is it a boat their put on or airplane ? You'd imagine they'd have to feed them for a day or two if long boat journey to stop em loosing weight ?

I have ram lambs that suit the specc now. I was going to go to the mart Monday, but will them buyers not be there? Also a few have very dirty tail ends as there were on after grass for 3 weeks, would that matter?

Mentioned to someone before, that Turkey is good for weanling trade, pity there wasn't something similar for lambs.
Their quote was the 21 day quarantine leaves it difficult.
Personally I feel we need more alternatives than factory for early lambs

Sold lambs to Wicklow cattle company last year out of the trailer on the scales full weight and up on the Lorry to Paris and paid into the bank, the lambs go by road down to be fed and then killed for the festival.

What date is the festival starting and finishing this year ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 201 ✭✭cattle man

It was very straight forward last year but the arabs are meant to be here this time so that might change things,

Any ram lamb i have above 40 kg is going if they dont want a few of them so be it
