Ladies Day at the Races...

...if there is a more inane and vacuous pastime than that so loved by women, and some men, who go from race meet to race meet wearing clothes borrowed from some boutique, I have yet to see it.

It's not like they design the dresses, or make them, their ability is limited to putting them on. That's it. They put them on, and not inside out or the wrong way round. And I guess maybe they apply a little make up. And then walk around for a while in front of some inter county player who uses too much hair product, sipping sparkling white wine.

I'd rather be in a bus load of angry feminists with hairy armpits on a hot day than spend a minute at Ladies Day at the Races.

They have to do something to get women down there, lets be honest it's not generally a sport that would come across as very appealing to women so turn racing into basically a social occasion rather than a sport that basically exists for gambling purposes (and lets be fair that's what it is for 95% of people) and you get women interested and turn it into a glamour event as women aren't all that interested on betting from my experience.To be fair it genius marketing by the people involved in horse racing.

Meh races aren't my thing, nor is dressing up competing against other women but I can see the attraction. Fashion is a hobby for some people and competing against other like minded people would be enjoyable for some people. I love looking at the different looks that are placed at ladies day. It's not just about a dress or a hat but it's how a person wears them and can carry themselves. They're not doing you any harm

I'm a woman and I'd be mortified at the thought of competing in a ladies day. Always thought it was really embarrassing seeing women being awarded a prize for being able to dress themselves. As if this could be the only reason a woman would be interested in going to the races.

My thinking about it was that it presents the idea that it's a sport women should be interested in because they have a ladies day, rather than the day itself and fashion competition being the reason women would go.

When they turn up at the track, get all the vacuous, self obsessed clothes horses to actually run the racecourse. even better if it's a National Hunt meeting. The clothes for ladies day aren't that attractive to 21st century men are they? It's like wedding gear, far too formal and off putting. Maybe it's what the horsey people like but they just look so stuck up and very rarely do you see an actual attractive woman there.

I went once or twice and most people looked fairly awkward and red faced talking to each other and only when there was a race on did it look relaxed.

Sorry, perhaps badly phrased, meant to ref to that subset who attend. They always featured women, and more recently there seems to be a trend for some competition for men, or more men are happy to be seen striding around at these events too.

Know 4 or 5 who go regularly, and that number again who go to the local event in Killarney. I guess it's a bit of harmless fantasy, know one in particular who owes money left right and centre, has a string of judgements against her, and yet loves nothing better than the Facebook pics of her in borrowed finery. Must be galling for her creditors.

It's just an day to get dressed up and go for drinks at a sporting event. I'd say 95% of women at Ladies Day have no aspiration of winning a prize for their outfits.

The most annoying thing about it is manoeuvring around the bigger crowds.

Yes. My bestie recently pay 60 pounds for one to attend a Ladies' Day in England. When it didn't arrive on time, she had to purchase another one. She also purchased two dresses, left one in Ireland the last time she was here, and when it also failed to arrive in time, ordered another dress.

It's the most ridiculous thing in the world. It frustrates me that she enjoys it, because she's quite an intelligent and lovely girl. However she is also bordering on neurotic about her appearance, so any chance to dress up and attempt to be the best feeds her neurosis.
