FTA is getting very attractive lately, apart from sports it's getting harder to justify a TV subscription!

    It is, yes.

I only noticed yesterday that Talking Pictures TV has been on Freesat/FTA since June.

    A lot longer than that!

You could see a lot more of these moving to freesat. I doubt Sky and others will want to pay for these fillers going forward. They will probably concentrate on core sports.

Netflix seems to have taken over the movies scene from Sky Cinema.

The Discovery showdown with Sky was a precursor for things to come.

If one was to get a freesat box what is the best way to integrate the saorview channels into one platform/remote?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,092 ✭✭✭ShaneOC

Great to see Dave being added to FreeSat. It certainly is a very good alternative to the pay packages on offer.

The only thing lacking now is the availability of HD channels other that the handful that are there now. This is very much evident in the entertainment section. 5 new HD channels would make a huge difference (e.g. Dave HD, E4 HD, More4 HD, ITV2 HD, ITV4 HD).

    Thanks for the link.

It is not possible to integrate the Saorview channels into the FreeSat platform.

However combo boxes are available (basic and the more advanced linux combo boxes).

Programmable remote controls are available. One4All of Logitech Harmony may help simplify the saorview / freesat setup.

Yeah agreed. It would be great if the ones you've listed there were HD.
I recently cancelled Sky myself and my TV actually has a built in twin Satellite tuner, so without any box at all I have Saorview and Freesat all on the TV. One thing I notice is that the SD channels seem better quality somehow this way than they were on Sky. E.g. Tv3, Itv2, etc were unwatchable on Sky but they look ok-ish on my current set up.

Good news about Dave.. it's probably the only one I'd (sorta) have missed since moving to Freesat :)

Like has been said regarding Saorview and Freesat on one platform but the humax remote can be programmed to operate most tv's.

Brilliant. Dave will be the first place to see the Top Gear repeats for me.

You'd better get to like Top Gear, Mock the Week and QI as you'll be seeing a LOT of them. :D

Yeah the repeats are nice but seeing new shows will be good too.

I had planned to see the Hoff's new sitcom on UKTV Play beforehand. I suppose the Dave channel will replace that need for now.

Is GOLD likely to follow eventually or would Sky like to keep that behind a paywall?

Seen it mentioned on the DS satellite forum that ITV Encore has gone Free To Air a few times in the last few days and then blocked again! Hopefully the encryption will be lifted permanently!

Scanning 12129 V 27500 2/3 now gives two FTA versions of both Drama and Really. Only difference is that the "new" versions are showing Irish ads. Presumably these are the new channels for Dave and Home, being discretely tested. :)

Drama and Really brought out the Irish versions a couple of months ago. Nothing new there yet

Full SD for Top Gear repeats?! They are spoiling us :D

Dave also has "Taskmaster" which IMO is one of the funniest shows currently on TV.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,635 ✭✭✭dublinman1990

The South Park movie: Bigger, Better & Uncut is on Dave right now if you don't want to miss it.

I see Parks and Recreation is on, I used to watch that on BBC Four so it'll be great to catch it again.

Great addition to FTA. It is getting much harder to justify paying money for Sky and Virgin basic TV packages

Has 'Yesterday' been added today as well. Dont recall seeing it before, plus its appears in the EPG in a default font. Home and Dave were in a default font earlier, but have since changed to their own this afternoon.

The humax freesat box remote is supplied with codes to programme the remote to operate most tv's, although you can't get Saorview through the receiver you can use the Humax remote to operate your saorview tv and the freesat box.
