I've a few mountain ash growing out of posts and I'm surprised they're doing so well. They were bonsi sized for a long time but they must of rooted down through the post now cause they're decent saplings now

I have a piece of an old railway sleeper lying beside the garage wall for years. I use to put it infront/behind the wheels of a livestock trailer that I had as a break.
Sometimes ash saplings grow in the cracks and during the Winter I transplant them into large pots. After two or three years I plant them in the hedges.
