Volkswagen emissions letter

So yesterday I received a letter from Volkswagen saying that I had to bring my car to a garage so they can sort some sort of emissions things free of charge. I'm guessing it's to do with the cheating thing they got found out on.

What happens if I just don't bother? From reading online I've heard a few horror stories about it. Its a 2012 golf and runs perfect at the moment.
