I recently read a post Facebook page in which a woman was saying the death penalty should be reintroduced because Ireland is such a dangerous place compared to China because they have the death penalty and murder doesn't happen in China because of it. She also went on to claim that we murder lots of out elderly and Ireland is far more dangerous than New York to live.

I generally feel very safe in Ireland!

Ugh, Facebook. Ireland is one of the safest places in the world, give or take a few psychos, but they are in every country.

Very safe. As countries go, Ireland is pretty much one of the most safe and open countries you could hope to live in. Sure, there is a few arseholes about the place, but you get that everywhere.

Regarding China, if your friend was living there she wouldn't have been able to post that to Facebook :) Anyways, there most certainly are murders in China, lots of them in fact. Once you move out of the glitz of the big cities, you will find some parts rural China would not far off from the third world. Thankfully we don't have that kind of poverty here either.

Of course when you're reading such a myopic view of things, that's when the unnecessary panic and paranoia sets in.

*looks out window, hears birds chirping*

    Incredibly safe.

I think that woman needs to go to Tibet so she can see how safe parts of China really are.

I'd really be taking what you read on Facebook with a pinch of salt OP. As entertaining, practical and useful as it is, it does attract a lot of people who believe and promote the most god awful crap. If you read into it too much you'll believe the world is falling apart, there are global conspiracies etc.

Get off of Facebook, read more reputable sources of news, watch some news channels, read some papers etc and you'll find that while Ireland does have many varying issues, it is for the most part really rather safe and not having a death penalty is rather a good thing. Look at countries that do have the death penalty and I think you'll find that those places are in fact a lot more dangerous.

Outside gangland the rate of murder in this country between people who don't know each other already is tiny.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,257 ✭✭✭Yourself isit

Dublin had more shootings per capita than London. That said it's pretty confined.

Dublin seems more hostile than some more dangerous cultures because of the visible drug issues though.

even gangland murders are vastly overstated. there were approximately 11 gangland murders last year. even the overall murder rate is tiny. we have as many murders in a year as new york does in a month.

How can you have a "view" on something that is easily confirmed one way or another, it's either true or it isn't and a random person on the Internet's opinions is neither here or there.

    From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_intentional_homicide_rate#By_country

    China 10,083 or 0.74 per 100,000 inhabitants (2014)
    Ireland 30, or 0.64 per 100,1000 inhabitants (2015)

Both very low by world standards. Maybe she meant Singapore (0.25)

China? Just over 10000 homicides in 2014 (0.74 per 100k) compared to Ireland with 30 (0.6). Yes obviously much safer due to the death penalty.

I feel safe enough in Ireland. I feel safer in Ireland than I did in England.
I could confidently leave my front door and car unlocked at night, if I wanted to.

I could do the same but not confidently.
I'm not in Dublin but not in the countryside either.

But your right there is tons of places in this country where you can leave things unlocked without fear and a good few are less than 30 miles from Dublin or less from other large cities in Ireland.

Best country in the world(bit of wilderness would be nice though)

I was walking down the street yesterday and some kids drove by in a car, rolled down the window and said I was gay.

They said people in China were a lot less gay because they didn't wear stupid brown shoes like me.

They went onto claim that I'm gay because I love the penis, and that I'm even gayer than people in gay clubs in San Francisco.

People are emotional and therefore stats are a better way to know how thing really are.

Asking how safe one feels in Ireland is pretty useless as Ireland will encompass Letrim, Dublin and Limerick. Leitrim is very safe indeed whereas Dublin and Limerick have crime gangs which means more violent crimes and less safe citizens

But let's compare country by country.
The 2017 Global Peace Index finds that the world became more peaceful in the last year, however, over the last decade it has become significantly less peaceful.

"Hey Mister you dropped your Gay card."

Got that one morning while walking past a group of feral tenement teens on a Dublin street corner

Ireland has the 18th lowest homicide rate in the world, and a good chunk of the countries below us are micro states like Andorra, Monaco, French Polynesia, Lichtenstein and San Marino - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_intentional_homicide_rate

No, 9th by gun deaths per 100000 people. 5th on % of homicides by gun.

If I had a €1 for every bullsh*t "We're all soft. Murder/rape/robbery doesn't happen in Russia/China/Japan because they decapitate/castrate/deport etc." post I've seen on facebook I'd be pretty rich.

I remember the best one, roughly along the lines of "You never hear about Russians being held hostage because (blatantly made up story about a Soviet politician being held for ransom in the middle east 80s and him being released unharmed all because of some Spetznaz brutally slaughtering and dismembering various Lebanese). We should take the same approach."

What makes it more ridiculous is that when I think of hostage taking the first thing that comes to my mind is Beslan:
