Do you remember when the internet first came out?
What was the first thing you looked up
My dad said to me.... you can look up anything in the world.
I couldn't think of anything to look up and Sonia o Sullivan was the big news at the time as she had just win a big medal.
So the first thing I looked up was Sonia o Sullivan.
So I'm thinking it was 1993 or else 1995.
Do you remember the first time you did d'h'internet.

Had one computer in college connected to the internet via Netscape I think in 93. We all had a gawk at playboy... they had one free nude image... took about 30 seconds to load it....

Other than that it was text based chat rooms and unix chat, talking to someone at the other end of the room...

Pictures of cars.

There was once a website that aimed to have a picture of every car ever produced and as a kid I must have spent hours on it. I even printed off low res pictures of my favourites for my bedroom wall.

I haven't looked for it but I suppose google image search killed it off

I remember it like it was yesterday........

It was 1997 and I had never used a computer before (other than played some games on a Commodore 64 in the late 80's). Then one day I was on George's St and I seen that Laser DVD had a sign in the window saying there was a new Internet Cafe open in their basement. Back then the Internet was known as the information super highway more than anything else and so I just tried to think about something I didn't know that I always wanted to know... and the first thing I could think of was 'How did Gary Holton die?' as I loved Auf Wiedersehen Pet and never knew what the hell had happened to him.

So in I went in and I must have asked the guy 20 or more questions about how to the simplest of things like increase the size of a window etc. Found some Auf Wiedersehen Pet fansite and so soon found out what happened Gary. Then I found myself wondering what else was online and after a quick glance around to see if there was anyone looking.... into AltaVista I typed 'Drew Barrymore's Playboy Pics' and me and the Internet have been inseparable ever since.

Mamod steam engines I kid you not. A spoilt next door neighbours kid had one and I always wanted one. They're rubbish now compared to the one he had in the 70's

My second time on the Internet was a little more productive than being merely about my own sexual gratification...........

Later that night when I got home I remembered that some old guy had been bugging my mam where she worked in a charity shop in town for an autobiography by some army guy. He said he had been under his command and would love to read his account of those years as the guy had since died. I'd asked around for the book in a few second hand book shops and checked with the library etc but nobody had even heard of it so I had kinda just forgotten about...... until that night and my stint on the net made me think of it again.

So anyway, either later that night or the next day I went back in and I found some second hand book portal wesbsite and a few places had it but it was $300+ in most for what all seemed to be first editions but one of them was selling it for $35 or something close to it. Fecking thing was in Canada though but I sure bought it a few days later anyway.

Took a good while to arrive from what I remember but gave it to my mam and said I found it in some second hand bookshop. Over the next months I kept asking her did the old guy ever come back but the answer was always 'No' until one day she phoned me and said he had walked past in the rain earlier that day and shouted in something like 'Don't suppose that book ever turned up?'. In the end he couldn't afford the £45 price the shop put on it but sure that was his problem is the way we looked at it. Only messing. Price was £1.50 or something and he was delighted with it.

Can't remember, but one of my first strong memories is of the time someone created the website bertieahern.com and demanded he be paid off by the Government after plastering it with porn.

Some good info here.

Any sort of free Porn website.

Alas there were none back in those days!

You'd have to wait 20 mins for a 15 second clip to download too.
Ya really needed to plan it out....

Circa 1997. First thing I looked up was frisbees as had been playing frisbee with a friend in the park and it was the first thing that came to mind. I remember being kind of taken aback that were websites dedicated to it.

You didn't have internet until 2003? :p

Think my first was a simpsons/futurama fan site. (Possibly the site that became "No Homers")
Wasn't old enough to be interested in boobs yet :pac:

When I first used the internet (UseNet groups in 1988), it wasn't possible to look things up. Well not in the way most people have described here.

1993 and I looked up the white house Web Page as it was one of the few places that had one.
It had an e-mail the president page , which I did and funnily enough another student did the same soon after and got in massive trouble as he included a death threat.

CompuServe chat rooms.

+1 for Compuserve and chat rooms around 1993 - 94. Got to chat with Americans would you believe?

Prior to that (1990 - 1992 ish), BBS via dialup- not really internet but sure it was all we had in the early 90's. Nemesis Dungeon was the first, I think.

No, actually, the Sierra Online BBS for walk through for one of their more maddening PC games.

To look up the online portions of a video encyclopaedia we received with our Gateway computer. The world got a lot bigger once that managed to load.

Don't remember the first thing but I remember using oceanfree chat a lot. Back in those days if someone told you they were Amy, 15 from Carlow they were in fact Amy, 15 from Carlow. Not Brian, 47 from Texas.

Pretty sure newgrounds was my first visit around 95 or 96. Possibly b0g.org if it existed then.

It was indeed , cant remember the kids name who got in trouble but I remember he did Magic in the canteen during Rag week

I got the internet at home in about 2000, I was 12 then so I think I spent most of my time looking up porn, using chatrooms (mostly to have cybersex, anyone even remember that phrase?) :P , downloading music on napster and doing quizzes on thespark.com such as ''the death test''. Also liked to look up rotten.com to see apparently dead celebrity autopsy pictures.

Yeah, that sounds like chap all right. We got up to some shenanigans with the old fake sender emails back then.

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 117 ✭✭HowItsMade

early 2000's looked up our first names as kids which inevitably brought us to porn...strangely enough all we typed in was "shane"

Weird the things you remember.

some chatrooms for starters, but now I want to know what happened that guy from Aufweidesehen pet.

I remember this very clearly. When I was a kid my Dad setting up the computer and sorting the internet, think it was AOL that you downloaded with a CD?

Anyway we got it up and running and my Dad said I could do the typing, I was all excited and feeling very grown up :P

I asked him what we should look at and he decided 'gardening' so my first internet search was that.

I also remember he then wanted to send an email to some family in America and we didn't have a clue what we were doing, we typed in my Uncle's email address as 'www.unclesemail@whatever.com' because we thought that's what you had to do, haha :D
