Lifestyle change!

Returning to Ireland in August and thinking about my accommodation needs and where I'd like to be located. One of my thoughts was to live aboard! So my question is....
Are there any permanent moorings to be had in Ireland? If so what are there costs likely to be?
    Insurance?
That sort of handles the main bits I guess. My space requirements are not large and was considering a sailboat around the 8 meter mark. Something to be a base, and also to enjoy a good sail in the summer months. I may not need winter berth as I may travel abroad so could have the boat stored during winter months.
    Any advise, suggestions?

    Thanks

I moved your post as you might get a better response here. Have a look at this https://www.iwai.ie/liveaboards/. as for insurance it's not too bad for boats a few hundred depending on the value of it and it's contents.

Hi Burrentech, sorry to be resurrecting a fairly old thread but I'm curious if you ever got anywhere with your liveaboard idea as I'm looking into the feasibility of a similar idea myself so any success you've had would be very heartening indeed.

    Hi Tonyandthewhale,

No problem, as you can see not much of a response, however I did get a chance to look at some boats for sale at a marina in the south. Sail boats are definitely more expensive in Ireland, even for older models. Berthing fees at the marina I visited seemed quite high for facilities offered when compared to some other EU countries. For a 36ft boat, summer mooring was quoted at €2160 for 6 months, & €240/month if left in over the winter. Hoisting the same boat out to the hard was €495, the same to put it back in the water. Costs for storing the boat on the hard was €42/week Prices are based on overall length of the boat so your results may vary. If you need shore power this was an extra cost per kilowatt.

The shower & toilet facilities I thought were an afterthought (a portacabin type affair) comparing with what is available in Denmark for a fraction of the cost. I am now involved in watching this guy refit a 42ft yacht and his costs are but a fraction of those I have been quoted, and he has purpose build shower & toilet, with a communal canteen/lounge area for residents. His YouTube channel is here.

Might go have a look at boats in the US when I visit next year and sail one back!
