I won 10k - what should I do with it?

I won it two months ago and I've been bored since I've finished college this year. I don't necessarily feel the need to celebrate, it's just I'm bored. Maybe I could spend some of it on a cheap holiday on my own or something! Or would there be any way I could use it to make more money?

    What would you do?

Is there anything you would really like to do? No point in going on a holiday if your only doing it out of a sense of misplaced duty. You could just save the money and spend it whenever you come across something you really want.

Start a pension fund with it, you'll definitely need it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 259 ✭✭howdoyouknow

Lend it to me and I'll definitely make you more money from it. I've been in a predicament lately where I've won the Nigerian lotto but I've to lodge 10000 euros to cover legal fees and security and transfer of my winnings to my account. I dont have 10000 so I had almost given up on the hope of getting my winnings. If you lend me your 10000 I'll split my winnings with you 50/50

If you have a pension at work then pay the maximum AVC's and replace the gap in take home pay each month until the 10k is gone. That way you'll have not only gotten 10k tax free but (at the marginal rate ) effectively have an additional 20k in your pension

Ah the way the country has been the last 10 years I'd stay clear of that. My da paid into his avcs only to hear Charlie MCcreevy drop 7 years down to 2 a month before he retired. By the time we retire there could be no such thing as avcs

I've no idea what you're talking about but if you had a pension invested in an example Irish fund over the last ten years then you'd have had 40% growth. So after ten years that 20k would be worth 28K. Not only that but another fund would have turned it into 47k.

Way things are going, op won't be able to access it till he's 75 and it'll have been raided and only have a tenner left in it, no point in pensions anymore.

Put it in the bank and forget about it.

I saved up more than that a couple of years ago to do something but decided not to do it. Never touched it and now it's gonna come in useful over the next few months when I finally have need for it.
Whereas a few years ago, a friend got a 15k payout after being attacked (he deserved more because he had to drop his life and move country for proper treatment) and he spent it all within 6 months of recovering on crap. Now, he's fairly broke and I'd say he regrets the ridiculous things he wasted it on.

Something about winning or getting money in a lump sum makes it disappear so quick. Try and be wise.

Glad I'm not the only one who thought the O P had won a 10 kilometre Road race instead of the obvious 10 thousand euros.

    This too shall pass.

As a game, poker never seemed any more entertaining than scrabble. And most certainly something you couldn't learn quick.

Give it to me in brown envelopes and I'll spend it on wondrous things in your honor.

Or use it to put a contract out on your enemies, we all have enemies and such.

I would go on a holiday, but save at least half of it. Or is there anything you want but couldn't really afford, like a car or something?

If I won 10k now, I would put it towards a deposit for a house, or else buy a new car

The only reason I'd need a new car is because the insurers are pretending the old one is more of a risk.

Pick a continent. Pick a timeframe. Let's say South America for 2 months. Read up for a few days and put together a rough itinerary. Book a one-way flight and take it from there. Fly home if you're done after that, or continue on elsewhere if you're liking it.

That's sensible advice in fairness, that being said it's not the advice I'd give. If the OP were to take councel (and wise counsel it would be) in my mind at least, the 10 large wouldn't last pissin time. It's hardly a life changing amount after all, 2-3 months salary to most. Question for the op,are you single? If so,go on the lash, preferably in a different country and inject some prime Irish beef into maidens from as many different nationalities as possible. I've crossed a few off my list, still haven't nailed an Eskimo but I will someday. Mark my words.
