It's that time of year!! Draws for Wimbledon 2017 are made tomorrow morning at 10am. Unfortunately, James McGee didn't make it through qualifying. He was beaten in three sets by Rublev. Can we start a campaign to get McGee a WC next year?:pac:

Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing how the draw goes! Will be interesting to see which side Federer and Nadal land on and how fit Murray and Djokovic are. On the women's side I'd love a Kvitova win!! Probably a long shot but I can dream.:o

Federer's draw so far from what I've gathered:

    R3: M Zverev
    R4: Dimitrov
    QF: A Zverev/Raonic
    SF: Djokovic
    F: Nadal/Murray

It's a tough draw but I suppose it could be worse.

Nadal meets Murray in the SF in a potential match-up.

Nadal could meet Cilic in QF.

    Well interesting draw anyway

If Murray is fit and in form it is very manageable for him. Seems to be limping heavily in practice but hitting well. The first few rounds shouldn’t be too problematic and potential matches v Brown and Vesely won’t be too exerting with short points. Kyrgios is always a danger but he’s been all over the place fitness and form wise since the spring. Stan has never been much of an entity on the grass. A Murray Tsonga quarter could be on the cards again

Well Federer will certainly earn the title anyway! Dolgo, Zverev and Dimitrov before he even reaches the Quarters. Raonic won’t be easy then and then possibly Djokovic, Murray/Nadal. He’s the popular, fairytale choice amongst many but at almost 36 I can’t fully trust him to navigate all of that

Rafa is an enigma here, he’ll probably do enough to make quarters but a Cilic match will be very interesting.

Tricky enough for Novak too. Lopez and Del Potro lurking in his section.

If Djokovic doesnt improve on his first 2 performances from Eastbourne then I cant see him getting past Del Potro, if he even makes it that far

Nadal got such a handy quarter while Federer's is loaded. FFS.

Looks like Dimitrov thumped Nadal in two practice sets today. Rafa also hammered by Berdych during the week

Granted un-competitive matches but given his knee issues you'd be mad to back Rafa here.

Murray seems to be moving a lot better as the day has gone on also. Apparently had three full on practice sessions

Djokovic has been woefully inconsistent this week. The second set against Young yesterday wasn't much short of abysmal from him

Looking at the draw, Pliskova has a great chance of reaching another slam final. I'm gonna predict an all-Czech Pliskova-Kvitova final, winning Kvitova winning. Feel free to drag me when they both lose early :pac:

Highly likely there'll be a new WTA world #1 as well, especially given the fact it's difficult to see Kerber defending her 1300 points. Kerber, Halep, Pliskova, Svitolina and Wozniacki (!) are all in contention for the ranking. If there has to be a new #1 I just hope they do it by winning Wimbledon, another slamless #1 is not what the WTA needs.

Agreed. Although if Nadal makes it past the first week the surface turns into a sort of clay-grass hybrid where he could flourish. I'd place him as still a threat.

I think this championship is between 4 people. Federer, Kyrgios, Cilic, and Nadal with a shot.

I'm a big fan of Kyrgios but given his last few months I can't see him doing much here

In terms of dark horses it wouldn't surprise me to see a Tsonga Cilic semi final. Tsonga is being overlooked from a lot of corners but he loves the grass and gave peak Murray a right old ding dong battle here last year. He's in the Murray/Wawrinka quarter so he'll have an opportunity

It's just so hard to know with Rafa. He's had "easy draws" in the first week here since 2011. I mean anyone he's lost to has been outside the top 100!

Don't really get blanket statements like this. Like who exactly will he lose to in the first 3 rounds, lets be honest?

He could have hardly handpicked a better first week draw

I don't expect much from Murray at Wimbledon tbh, he needs a long break. Unfortunate that he's defending over 8,000 points for the rest of the season, I hope he doesn't go chasing them. I still think he'll probably make the semi's though.

It's based off his form and my general feeling. Stale and tired. And not physically near his best. Plus, draw or not SW19 -
can always produce great tennis from any player..

Nadal and Fed being dumped by no hopers the past few years should tell us this.

Murray meant to be in big trouble from all reports from his camp, could be an early round retirement.

Weird to see Roger and Rafa favourites for a Wimbledon again. Djoko won today at Eastbourne but still not convinced based on his major showings this year.

Raonic hasn't been great this year but this is where he's seems to excel, so for me work a shot at 25's on Betfair. Also Stan is perennially overpriced in majors, can be got at 40's. Obviously not his favourite surface but that top half looks the weaker given major doubts over Andy's fitness so could open it up for others.

trickiest draw Federer has gotten in a long time here, but he could easily through the first few rounds like a hot knife through butter and be well rested from the quarters onwards

impossible to know what nadal will do, murray the same, djokovic the same, although adding Mario Ancic to the team should help.

It took Djokovic a few months to get the Becker thing fully working, so it might be early to see solid results from the Agassi 'phone coaching' thing.

Cilic would be my dark horse, would be nice to see a new slam winner but the younger brigade all look not quite ready as yet...

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,559 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

Some potential banana skins for Federer alright, but as above he could just as easily glide through the draw. Nevertheless I'm hoping he, Nadal and Djokovic all lose early :pac: If Murray doesn't do well, which he probably won't, Kyrgios-Zverev is the dream final for me.

Women's draw, f*ck knows what'll happen. I'll stick with my Pliskova-Kvitova final prediction, with Petra being the winner. Some comeback that would be if it happened!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57,372 ✭✭✭✭walshb

I think this year will be the best in quite some time that a non "big 4" player can win...I just have that feeling. Raonic/Clic/Stan feel off it...

Last year that none of the current big four won was 2002....

Anyone catch Sue Barker's Wimbledon programme last night? Was quite good.

What a great tussle between Venus and Mertens there, shame Mertens couldn't take the set. Hope she doesn't predictably fade away now.

Lucic-baroni lost her match to witthoft 2-1. In the decided She was 5-0 up in and had a match point and ended up losing the set 8-6.

Stan out. Didn't even try in the end

Not much of a surprise with Stan, he barely tries at most tournaments.

I am watching some of the build on the Wimbledon Channel of twitter...Are they going to show live games or do they just chat?

i was watching it yesteday on Twitter too and they show slightly delayed coverage(maybe 5 minutes), they stayed on the Nadal match for the first 10 minutes and then said to continue watching switch to BBC or ESPN. it was handy in work though as i got to see some of the action.

Good match between Del Potro and Kokkinakis at the moment on court 2.  A set each and 3-3 in the third.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,559 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

Shame Kokkinakis completely collapsed in the second set tiebreak. Wouldn't mind seeing him win this after all his injury woes, plus I've never been quite as enamoured with Delpo as most seem to be, he's been partial to the occasional tactical toilet break in his time.

Delpo was 100/1 last week, thought that would be worth a cheeky 5e each way, pays 750 odd, nice little long shot anyway

Am jealous looking at all the people on centre court getting baked in the sun. Would love to be there.

What a great match between Konta and Vekic.  9-8 in the third set now.

I'm loving the Brown-Murray game.... except for fact that Murray is going to win it 3-0 :(

I LOVE watching D Brown play! Really sorry we're not going to get to see more of him this time.

Murray was tremendous today, barely made an error.

Clear to see the focus difference he brings this year between slams and non -slams

Those writing him off after queens may look very foolish yet

watching Ostapenko vs the Canadian Abanda. Down to the deciding set but Abanda had a good chance to take the match in the second set tie-break.
Even if she wins would be hard to see Ostapenko getting past a decent grass-court player. Her serve is woeful. The winners don't seem to be flying off as fast as they did on the clay of Paris for some strange reason.

on the men's side I see Nadal having a strong chance this year if he can get past the first week.

Nadals only real obstacle before the final is Cilic. He couldn't have prayed for a better draw.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,930 ✭✭✭jr86

Yeah Murray isn't an obstacle at all...

Agreed. But seriously, Murray's game doesn't trouble Nadal all that well. His record against Nadal in GS's is abysmal.

some of it going back a while but Murray has only taken 1 set off Nadal in 3 matches at Wimbledon.

Nadal looked back to near beast-mode in France. In that sort of form it doesn't matter what sort of surface you're playing him on.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,930 ✭✭✭jr86

Murray hasn't played nadal here since 2011 ffs over a year before he even won his first slam

Theyve played once in a slam in what 6 years? That was in Murray's worst season too. On clay

It's always cool and all that to write off murray this time of year but he's certainly a better grass courter than nadal since 2012.

He was as good as FO 2008 level. His defence will never be as good as it was that year but he is better offensively this year.

The only time I seen Murray play awesome against Nadal in a GS was the USO 2008 SF. He was brilliant. I'd love to be wrong as I hate Nadal's game, but if Nadal makes it to the SF I can't see Murray beat him here, especially as second week Wimbly plays slower and has a higher bounce.

If Federer manages to make it to the final I still would see Roger as the favourite of the two though. His draw is packed and if he comes through it, it means he hasn't lost his early year form. Interested to see his level tomorrow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 695 ✭✭✭lostcat

the biggest threat in to Nadal reaching the semis was always a Kygrios / Cilic type (or indeed a D Brown type) who has the grass weapons (huge serve, first strike tennis) and who if they are on fire are basically unplayable. he seems to have avoided everyone of that type except Cilic, who is playing well this year and could easily bet anyone on grass on a given day.

I would fancy murray to beat nadal in a semi, just.....

and I would fancy Federer to beat him in a final,

theres a reason he hasn't been into the later rounds here since 2011, someone who is better at playing tennis on grass usually pops up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57,372 ✭✭✭✭walshb

If Nadal is on form he will make the final....He is just that hard to beat. Grass or whatever. He has shown several times that he can win on grass...

Murray would need to play out of his skin to have a chance against an in form Nadal.

Bethanie Mattek Sands looks to be in serious bother. During her match vs. Cirstea her body went one way and her knee went the other. She was on the court screaming....very tough to watch. Safarova was in tears. Got oxygen from medics before being stretchered off. According to AELTC she has an acute knee injury and is in hospital.
