Do you think they should bring back this much missed alternative music show?

    By who?

The 3 people who watched it when it was first on.

Feel free to disagree with me, but I reckon an updated Nightshift for the 2010s/2020s, with a few tweaks, could be a big hit with the Spotify generation. It's unlikely Michelle Doherty would return because she lives in London now, but Eithne Shortall, Kelly Anne Byrne, Mary Kate Geraghty or Peter Devlin would be good choices to present the show. It's highly unlikely ANY alternative music show (bar Other Voices) would work in the current economic climate, but it would be nice to have a show like ND/NS back on our screens. It would certainly be better than hearing the latest on Kim Kardaschian etc.

Here's an interview with Boss Volenti from back in the good ol' days of Irish music television!

You wouldn't get that on Xposé would you?

...and here's Republic of Loose performing "Somebody Screamed" for them at Airfield.

And for those who may be interested to hear the reboot demo I found on Mixcloud (I don't know if it's a good idea or just pointless), here's the link:
    http://mixcloud.com/DJBambiInDaHouze/dj-bambi-nightshift-comeback-radio-demo-31815

It features tracks from Caribou and SOAK.

I don't mind one way or the other. :o;)

The trouble with alternative music shows here in Ireland is that they tend not to last very long on air. They're all good, of course - but either they don't get big enough viewing figures, or the commissioners have a change of heart, or both.

Indeed, after Nightshift ended, Michelle Doherty went on to host When Under Ether (named after a PJ Harvey song), which lasted only two series:

    http://www.rte.ie/tv/programmes/when_under_ether.html

The one big exception is Other Voices, which has now been running for a stonking 15 years. But of course, Other Voices is also a festival - with its own web site, sponsorship from Eir, and performances from Stateside as well as Dingle:

    http://www.othervoices.ie/content/other-voices-austin

And would Nightshift have lasted much longer, anyway, had TV3 not acquired Channel 6? The takeover took place just before the recession began, and C6 was understood to have been loss-making at the time - so it's not inconceivable that the channel could have collapsed spectacularly, rather like Setanta Sports in the UK.

Finally, while I was fairly disappointed when Nightshift ended, I was even more disappointed five years earlier, at the end of 2003, when Music Cubed fell off the air after around six months. This wasn't an alternative music show - it featured the White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army" and Beyoncé and Jay-Z's "Crazy in Love", while also playing Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" almost every night - but, like Nightshift, it made good viewing for music fans and insomniacs.

The "When" was dropped for the second series and it was just called "Under Ether".

I think bringing back Nightshift would be the best decision TV3 could ever make. Eight/nine years off air is long enough.

Better even than axing Xposé?!?!?    :D;)

Last year they brought back David McWilliams' current affairs show Agenda after a lengthy period off the air. But, of course, that was and is a more high-profile show than any of TV3's or Channel 6's music shows... :o:);)

Why did Agenda end in the first place?

Quite simply, it stopped fitting with what TV3 wanted to do. Mind you, this was three years before Xposé began...

And here's an easily-forgotten fact about the original Agenda: its theme tune was Massive Attack's "Teardrop". ;)

    2004 so?

By the way, this was the Nightshift theme tune which can also be heard in the opening link of the 2015 radio demo:

    Peaches rocks. :o;)

Getting back on topic, I see that as things currently stand, the majority of voters *do* want Nightshift brought back - but, again, the percentage wouldn't *quite* be enough to elect the Pope... :o;)

Here's a good question. If Nightshift did come back, who would you like to see presenting it? My choice would be Eithne Shortall or Kelly Anne Byrne, both women have fantastic tastes in music.

A clip of the Beatfreakz on Nightshift's sister show the Loop at the end of December 2006. The Loop was kind of an extension of Nightshift, airing music videos uninterrupted all through the night. It ended in mid 2008 when Doughty Hanson purchased Channel 6, replaced I think by some Babestation-type show set in an office. Anyway, here's the clip, which opens with the very end of Mojave 3's "Breaking the Ice" video.
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=8mnU3_CDgGs
The Beatfreakz track wouldn't have been heard dead on Nightshift :-)

Yes Harvey, Peaches is so damn underrated.

I don't blame the majority of voters, even if it's not enough to elect the Pope.

A music video for "1992" by the Tightrope Walkers. One of the members worked on both Nightshift and Under Ether.
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=fev_X9qLk6o

TV3 wouldn't touch this video with a 20 foot pole.

Director's "Reconnect" video from 2006. Another somewhat successful band that were playlisted on Nightshift.

If they can bring back Love Island, then why not Nightshift?

The Blizzards' "War of Words" video from that very same year. This is not the actual video for the song but the video got heavy rotation on the classic Nightshift in 2006/2007 and where the heck would you see a Blizzards vid on TV nowadays?
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=LACOoAEY52A

So many great memories of Nightshift, even if it has been almost erased from history.

Another Nightshift classic, Delorentos' "The Basis of Everything". Really good animation as well. http://youtube.com/watch?v=XeuZ_0Ka-Q8

TRIVIA: There was a mashup of "Basis of Everything" and "Reconnect" called "Delorector" which received airplay on the Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show on Today FM.

this is a little off topic but kind of fitting with the theme- i seem to recall a show late night on TV3 which had people sending videos of themselves miming to well known songs. Any ideas what it was?

If you mean the main channel, I can think of Pop on 3 and MusicCubed.

Nightshift and Love Island are two completely different shows in just about every way possible - country, production company, genre, budget, target audience, viewership etc etc etc...

It certainly wasn't Music Cubed, anyway.

    I'm thinking Uploaded, but that's on 3e.

Anyway, with a few hours to go before this poll closes, I can see that there's no majority now - we're split down the middle... :o:D;)

Yeah but Love Island was a show that was (originally) cancelled due to disappointing ratings.
