Ok here is my training log. I just completed the Dunmore East Sprint Tri. Very much a novice effort 1:34.

14:40 for swim, and 44:56 for bike which I was happy enough with because I had been on a bike twice in the build up. Transitions and Run were awful though.

Anyway, I have learned a lot and want to give it another go in Carrick on Suir in 6 weeks time. Started training in earnest today for it.

Run: Approx 1 hour at lunch time
    Swim: 1200 metres

    A few stats:

    Male, 6ft, 37yo, 12st12lbs

1200 mtr swim at lunch time
5.12 mile jog this evening 9:22 min miles
Feels like running is gone to pot since starting cross training 8 weeks ago

45 mins on the Watt Bike in the gym today, worked up a good sweat as you do in the gym.

    That was at lunch time

1200m swim in the pool after work. Been lucky the first three days of the week getting the training in.

Bought a new bike a couple of weeks ago and used it for the first time in the tri in Dunmore. Front wheel is not a little out of true so I'm taking it back to Halfords tomorrow. It's a boardman team carbon and I really like it. Hope they can sort because I'd like to do a long spin at the weekend

Ran 10k at lunch time today. Cycled bike to Halfords to get front wheel trued and walked home.

Wondered when tiredness from increase in training would hit?

    Answer: right now, flaked

Right now I'm thinking rest day tomorrow ,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 245 ✭✭calabi yau

Took a rest day today, apart from walking to Halfords and collecting my bike. Brought it in with a slight buckle on the front wheel yesterday at lunch time (took a half day), and left work early today to pick it up, had to pick up kids afterwards.

Anyway guy tells me he hasn't had time to look at it so I cycle it home with said buckle but now several hours down on my work clock.

Anyway, he said he was too busy and it is a busy spot so whatevs.

Having a few beers now, maybe head to local park run in the morning.

    Park run this morning
22:37 for 5k, delighted with this because I thought it would be a lot worse. About 7:15 per mile

Cycled in and out of Park Run

400 mtr swim this afternoon. Steady 20 lengths, bit tired after efforts this morning.

Met up with Local tri club this morning for about a 35km spin. Terrific. Love the bike despite slight aforementioned buckle, it's so light

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 245 ✭✭calabi yau

8k jog on grass at lunch time today.

1200 mtr in pool but very disjointed, first thirty had problems with goggles until I eventually went in to changing rooms and dried them and my face off (only way they'll stick properly). Did final 30 lengths in pool with about 30 lads from some kind of club in there.

    There's always tomorrow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 245 ✭✭calabi yau

Lunch time - 45 tough minutes on Watt bike in gym followed by 10 minutes jog on tread mill

After work, 40 lengths of pool 800m when son was getting a lesson.

6k today at lunch time, very cranky and unsettled today. May be over training, nothing else for the rest of the day and maybe a rest day tomorrow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 245 ✭✭calabi yau

Thursday - rest day. Also got results of a computer studies diploma, got a first so celebrated that with a few sneaky Frosties. Hardly ideal preparation

Friday - despite myself, went to swimming pool for 1200 mtrs

Saturday - 30km on bike, was so glad I did this one, unfortunately though, had a few pints again for my sisters birthday

Sunday - mock tri with tri club, just joined this morning. 1:34, just under 16 mins for swim around 50 on the bike including T1 and probably just under 30 for 5.2 km run. I'd say this was a better performance overall than Dunmore East

1200 tired metres in pool this morning, 40 mins tired run at lunch time

Nothing of note today, well tired, lots of stuff going on at the moment

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 245 ✭✭calabi yau

45 minutes lovely run in forrest, followed by quick dip in the sea, great stuff

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 245 ✭✭calabi yau

Good really tough session on Watt bike today's for 45 mins avg watts 192, that's 10 watts up on last week

Followed by 10 minutes on treadmill 10.5 kph incline 2

Delighted with it, lost about 8 pints sweat, not pretty

1200 mtr pool swim this morning
10k run at lunch, tired and hungry now but think maybe Park run in the morning

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 245 ✭✭calabi yau

Park Run this morning 21:40, 8 seconds off PB, over the ruddy moon, triathlon is the way forward

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 245 ✭✭calabi yau

30k cycle this morning, was tired after but funniily enough, I seem to be getting used to being tired. Was quite irritable yesterday though after a good effort at park run. Not good.

Bike is making a load of bloody noise in the drive train, I think cables have gotten a little stretched and gearing is not as tight as it could be. Bringing it back to Halfords on Tuesday, hoping for a better result than last time, I.e no result ( good or bad )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 245 ✭✭calabi yau

800 metres steady to strong swim this morning

8 k run at lunchtime, feeling good but hungry

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 245 ✭✭calabi yau

Rest day today, really tired, brought bike back to Halfords today, the guy tightened up my gears and trued the front wheel. Bike seems to be running well. Bought a bottle cage, mini pump and saddle bag. Gonna chance a 100k sportive on Sunday.

Thanks very much, appreciate that :)

    Been a funny (busy) week.

On Wednesday, got some funny news about a transfer in work that kind of threw me. Love my current job but I applied for a promotion and those are the risks you take I suppose if it materialises. The proposed move involves a decent commute that will end up costing me, and for not a very nice job.

Anyway, nothing is set in stone yet but ended up heading to the gym after work to get some head space, 10 mins on Watt bike, 10 mins on treadmill and some core and about an hour in the jacuzzi

Thursday, I had a beautiful 8k run but then started feeling really tired so I have a bit of a dose now.

Been a relatively poor week training wise and nothing yesterday.

Volunteering at local Park Run this morning but sportive looks unlikely tomorrow and if it does happen it will be the 50k variety. Man flu :(

Anyways hopefully find out more about work next week and all will be ok.

    50k sportive yesterday

1000 mtr swim today, not having a good day

Good luck with work and maybe you need a good rest day to recharge the batteries or take it handy till you feel better

Hi, thanks for that :) I ran 10k at lunch time today & found it tough enough but was delighted I did it. Extremely warm out there today.

Funny stuff happening in work. They're not making it easy for me that's for sure. Yesterday, I spoke to personnel, then got the union involved, and finally turned down a job I haven't even been offered yet :D

Still awaiting an offer but it will be next week before it happens at least. Just hope it's the right offer :fingers crossed:

5 mins on spinner followed by 40 mins on Watt bike, tough as always, lost buckets of sweat again

    1200 mtr swim yesterday

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 245 ✭✭calabi yau

About a 70km spin this morning. Wonderful. Met a fella at a sportive last Sunday and he said a group left locally every Sat morning at 9:30. So I rocked up there. Even a part of their lotto syndicate now. Really nice group. Coffee and cake on the way back too.

80 mins jog this morning. A mate and I are heading to Newcastle for Great North Run in September so have one eye on that too.

Carrick on Suir Sprint Tri next Sunday, and probably a club mock tri on August Bank Holiday but then that will be it tri wise I'd say until Moby Dick in Cork in September.

Having a great time with it all I have to say but will need to concentrate or the running for 4 - 5 weeks for the Great North Run.

One of the lads on the spin yesterday was saying I need to sort out a decent pair of shorts. I'm a fan of GCN on YouTube and they had some decent looking gear on sale on their online shop. The bib shorts looked well reviewed to picked up a pair, but also liked the look of the jersey so got that too.

Basically what I'm trying to say is, I'm gonna be a FKW, unwittingly. It never meant to happen this way but there you have it. All the cyclists I see are FKW's anyway, at least it's not a yellow jersey

800 mtr swim moderate to strong at lunch time. Was in lean six sigma training all day and again tomorrow - snooze fest

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 245 ✭✭calabi yau

10km run today after leaving work a little early. Extremely warm out there. 8k of the run was on grass. There feels like a little knot in my right calf muscle which I picked up on Sunday long run.

I'm not too worried about it though because I probably won't run again until Sunday. Gives me a chance to get some bike miles in and ease off before Carrick on Sun

Good luck at the weekend, I ran in I guess a Tri/ adventure race, well we kayaked rather than swam LOL about 2 weeks ago and loved it, next one is in August then our next on is September

I love GCN on youtube, find them great I am new to cycling, well this type of cycling you will defiantly need the good shorts I got some decent ones in Halford and Aldi a few weeks back.

Foam roll that calf of yours so it is right for the weekend

Ah ok, so you are fairly new to this too?

The adventure races are tough going I'd say but sound like great fun. Best of luck with training for the next 2. Do you keep a log?

I guess as I'm increasing my distances on the bike, it's becoming more apparent that you need proper gear. Not only shorts but a bottle cage, saddle bag with spare tube, tools etc, jerseys with pockets. Thank god for Lidl and Aldi.

The GCN shorts were a bit more expensive alright but hopefully that will pay off with time in the saddle.

I foam rolled yesterday but it's definitely something I need to remind / force myself to do, or I tend to just leave it out of my routine.

    :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,070 ✭✭✭Baby75

Yep a total newbie LOL adventure racing I think it's very easy to get hooked, Nope no log yet I am thinking about it :)

yep, you need a good bit of gear all right and for events, you are nearly better having two bottle cages on the bike one for water and one for a sports drink with carbs or electrolytes or both in it:)

I say the shorts will be worth the extra cost, your bum will thank you for it ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 245 ✭✭calabi yau

Yeah might get myself the second bottle cage. Looks like my full GCN gear is lost in transit somewhere. I'm sure it'lol be sorted.

1200 mtr swim today. Good felt strong enough. Not going crazy this week just relax before Sunday. Hopefully get out for a spin tomorrow or Friday

    When is Moby Dick B?

I was going to say you should come up to the Pulse race in Clogherhead but it's my birthday that day so unlikely I'll be marshalling!

Moby Dick is in Cork on 30th September. It will be my last chance to get one in this year. Calendar fairly full now. Looks like the Pulse one is 9th Sep but I'm heading to Newcastle for Great North Run that day.

So after Sunday, and possibly a club tri August Bank holiday, I'll be fully concentrated on running.

Then when I get back, only two weeks to Ben5k so that will be all go. So will use Moby Dick as a complete de-stresser

30km cycle after work, arms a little sore, bike fit may not be perfect. Wore the new GCN kit, actually quite comfortable.

Didn't notice and really dodgy looks. Not as thin as the GCN guys, look a bit lumpier in the gear

    Rest day Saturday

Sunday - Carrick on Suir Sprint Tri 1:23:55

Had the car all packed up the night before. Was running through checklists constantly in my head as you do. Headed off at 8:15, I was a bit nervous I have to admit.

Stopped in mooncoin for some drinks and met a club mate in Supervalue car park, where we patched up his wet suit with some Black Witch.

First outing with club, there were 21 of us there which was really cool. One lady even drove up and looked after our bags because the weather didn't look great.

Loads of time to get ready, then headed down to river entry point. I was really nervous now. But as soon as I hit the water and realised it wasn't cold, all nerves dissipated. Some people were really nervous and I think I helped put one person at least at ease.

Swim was good 13:55 I think. Lots of river plants and stuff but a could clear line to the finish with no one really hitting me or vice versa.

    Transition was 3:00, needs work.

Lovely bike course, perfect surface, though wet due to some heavy showers. 41:53.

    0:50 T2 - I use runners and toe clips :)

Really flat run then along river bank, out and back 24:00

Saw time on clock and was really disappointed but forgot that I was in wave 2 which started 10 mins later - happy days

Different day, fantastic day. A club member had the idea to do the Park Run in New Ross followed by swim in Baginbun, the entry point for the Tri The Hook triathlon in Wexford.

Left home at 8:30 for New Ross Park Run, arrived at 9:10. People misread the WhatsApp message and went to Wexford Town Parkrun. So just myself and this other guy and some New Ross people who are the friendliest people in the world.

Bit out of it this morning, an impromptu day but I was up for anything.

Run was poor comparatively, 22:54, but off the back of 3:30hrs spin and 10k training run. New Ross also a lot tougher than Johnstown Castle, all hills.

So we headed for Baginbun where we met the others who got their Park runs mixed up. We swam 800 metres sea swim and came back to shore, then another member came and we went out for another 1000 metres. I swam quite well. Conor who I met in Park Run was in a kayak, encouraging, guiding us and keeping us safe. He knew the distances too. Fair play to him, amazing.

Then myself and the two others had coffee for 2 hours in the sunshine in Fethard, laughed about the big novice heads on us and had a lovely time. What a day, I'm high as a kite :)

25th August, its been while since I updated.

Was on holidays since the Saturday 19th August. Haven't got up to much since then. One fairly long intense run in Co. Clare 1:37 mins around 9 mins per mile - almost 11 miles.

Also did a bit of a cycle tour of the Burren but that wasn't too tasking.

What happened before that though is a little mystery which is the reason why I started this blog so that I wouldn't forget.

    Thursday 17th - 2 hour cycle

    Friday 18th - 45 minutes tempo run

It hasn't been a great fortnights training in fairness. So no better time to another tri then

Try the hook tomorrow - looking forward to it, early start, not expecting much, up about 2 - 3 pounds on the scales since holidays started.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 245 ✭✭calabi yau

Wow 3 weeks since I updated.

Tri the hook was ok, had a back spasm off bike so run was a disaster 1:43

Recovered well enough did some wonderful things including a 2km swim in Rosslare

Half marathon in Newcastle ( great North run) 1:47

Wanted to break 1:45 and not making excuses but we were on our feet for 4 hours before race began.

Now I want to log everything I'm doing again because I've signed up for a half distance in Loch Cutra.

8 k jog today, very enjoyable, measured a course for a race I'm organising next Sunday, and then some more
