For HM or mara training, I have generally leaned towards the LSR on a sunday, thinking I need a bit of a tempo on sat..

But ,I have some pals who have to(psychologically) get their LSR out of the way on sat ,to free up sat evening.

I did sat runs one year and it did not affect my mara time.

(I suppose it also matters what you are doing for the rest of the week!1)

    any thoughts?

Doesn't make a blind bit of heed what day you do it on, when ever suits you best (have had to do Friday's or Monday/Tues some weeks myself) however if you are doing it early at week to free up for you rake of pints or a guilt free hangover on a Sunday morning (on a regular basis) you will see it take its toll somewhere else in the plan be it illness, injury or just lack of recovery for other sessions during the week

You also need to consider how your training plan is structured. For example, P&D's marathon plans are fairly rigidly-defined, and moving one day's workout necessitates shifting about the other days to accommodate it. On the other hand, Daniels' 2Q marathon plan is a lot more flexible, you just need to have two easy days scheduled before each session, switching Sunday and Saturday has negligible impact

Also, try and do your last few long runs on the same day of the week your goal race is scheduled. Gets you into the "race day" routine.

I had a coach schedule it for a Saturday with a steady hill run on Sunday - because that fit with his coaching philosophy...or sometimes a session on Sunday after the long run. Makes no difference really, fit it in when it works for you. I now do mine on Friday evenings as it suits me better for other training over the weekend.
