I've always liked the surname Daly. I just like the sound of it although not so good if the first name is Richard and is shortened!

That's the actress Olivia Wilde's real surname. She probably would have kept the original if she was in a different entertainment industry :p

I lived in England for years and always thought Ward was a common-or-garden English name, it's not associated with Travellers at all over there.

I've always quite liked those Norman Irish surnames like Fitzsimons or Fitzgerald for some reason.

    The first ever Irish surname.

In the old days your surname would be either

    Mac "Your fathers name", or,

    Ua "Your Granddad's name"

Depending on who was more famous.

But the great grandson of Brian Boru, Muirchertach called himself "Ua Brian" even though his granddad's name was Tadc because his great granddad was so famous, and so did all of Muirchertach's decendants.

I thought surnames associated with the Ui Niall were the first.
Now, this is a surname that would get you noticed.

I've always wondered about Mac an tSagairt and Mac an Easpaig. The rules about celibacy in the church much have been looser back then...
