I was only explaining to someone three hours ago who Mark Ronson is and why I hate him, damn.

The skit is pretty funny, but Mark Ronson? I dunno about the sound of that and the wee clip that we hear of the first song fills me with trepidation - we shall wait and see I suppose. They've been an amazingly consistent band up to this point in their career, I don't think they've released a bad album. Let's hope they can keep it going.

Definitely does seem to be a funky sound to that song.

Could be an Era Vulgaris sort of feel to this album.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,211 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

I thought it was more Them Crooked Vultures actually.

I got an EV/TCV mash up. It's like an aggressive EV, be hard to keep up the standard of the last album but nothing to indicate it's getting let down.

Mikey gets a poor going over in the video, it's exactly what I imagine Josh doing, script or no script!

I don't really know much about him other than what I have heard on the radio. Is it that bad?

No. The amount of people on fan pages and Reddit ****ting their pants because Ronson is producing it is hilarious!

Sure, he's produced loads of pop music, but he's worked on other stuff too, and QOTSA are his all time favourite rock bank, he's said so himself. Just because he's produced lots of pop stuff doesn't mean that Villians is suddenly going to be a pop music album...

I'm a teeny weeny bit obsessed with qotsa, they're my all time favourite band, the clip of the new song sounds amazing and I can already see josh doing his hip swing to it live :) I'm really looking forward to the interview josh is doing with zane Lowe today :) 4pm our time

I really hope that is somehow the worst song on the album.

I really like the new single. Pure ZZ top

Love Queens, saw them live plenty of times, but I'm not arsed by the new song. And to be honest, I differ from what seems to be everyone else in that their previous album left me underwhelmed; decent album, but nowhere near their best.

I can understand the evolution of the band, and by listening through their albums chronologically their progression is really apparent, but stylistically I'm just more into their early music as opposed to their less hard stuff of recent years.
I'll still look forward to the new album when it hits, but I'll also manage my expectations so I won't be disappointed when I don't hear some crunchy, bottom-heavy guitar riffs.

I love the last album, do think this one will be more dance-y.

Anyone see the thing about the 'Coming TwentyFive' teaser? The cracks in the letters would make out Villains.

Would agree with most of this, I liked the last album but it's not really close to their earlier stuff. I much prefer the hard rock riffs of 15-20 years ago but it looks like those are gone for the band. And that's fine, I can get into the new stuff too. That song they've released just isn't a great song though, regardless of the style it was recorded in.

I know it's to be expected considering who's producing but there's a real dancey vibe to the latest clip released. I like it

Don't think it's as good as Like Clockwork on early listening. In saying that, the fear of Mark Ronson making it a rockier auto-tuned shítshow can be put aside too. Think it fits in more beside EV THAN LC.

That and they'll be belters live too!

Homme disappeared up his own jacksie a long time ago. Nick may have been a bit of a mentalist but qotsa haven't been the same since he was fired. For me, he balanced out Josh's weakness for over indulgence and gave the music an unrelenting sense of purpose. His bass playing absolutely drove their best two albums.

It's all style over substance with qotsa now. A hollowed out shell of a once great band.

New song released today is pretty poor anyway.

The whole album leaked the day before yesterday. It's excellent. Although if you're one of the "fans" that thinks they went downhill after nick left, you ain't gonna like it.

So you want bands to stand still and do the same thing ad museum? Completely ignoring external factors that mean people are in different places in their life?

The comments that it's happier and dancier are bang on cue, gets better on each listening.

I see lads called Broncho are supporting them. Won't be rushing in now.

Lullabies to Paralyse was a QOTSA game changer for me. Loved them since.

You know... I think the way you used to do might actually be the worst song on the album.

Have given it a couple of listens, it's pretty decent. Definitely more of an Era Vulgaris vibe off it than the last one, which is great for me as I actually preferred that album. It's possibly missing one or two standout tracks for me, something a little more hard rocking to mix it up a little too would have been nice. But overall it's fairly good.

Nope. The simple reality for me is that Josh's musical ambition outstrips his talent as a songwriter. Nick was a bulwark against Josh's penchant for self indulgence - which has sadly marred practically every project he has embarked on since they parted ways.

I find contemporary qotsa to be vacuous. Flash-bang production , but no wallop. Just my opinion....not gospel.

    ad museum?:p

That's a poor auto correct right there.

I enjoy the self indulgence, I Appear Missing is one of their finest songs, alongside Someone's in the Wolf. Many bands will lose the wallop as they get older, unless they're trying too hard to maintain a particular sound.

New song is pretty weak. Sounds like EODM. Not convinced the new album will be any good. LC was decent. A bit different. I don't expect "old" QOTSA but...

Agree with this. Regarding the EODM comparison, I said the very same thing, and I would put it down to production to be honest. It has that same tinny weak guitar tone, it's nowhere near as heavy as some of the riffs in that song require, it just sounds washed down and overly compressed.

There's not much point in dumping on Mark Ronson because it's Mark Ronson - he's an established producer and a successful one at that, all for a good reason - but to say I am surprised by his apparent influence in the tracks so far would be a lie, I didn't expect much in terms of great Rock sound.

It sounds like pop music with distorted guitars. All the fancy photos, the teaser videos, the suits, the haircuts etc.....

Whatever about the music, who cares about the suits and haircuts etc? Your post reminded me of the crap Metallica got around the release of Load.

And hasn't Troy always worn a suit?

Troy lives in a suit really, bar one time I saw them and he was hammered he made a ham fisted effort of getting into his gear.

This new tune sounds terribly uninspired for a lead single. I like a bit of heft in my guitar tones....this sounds compressed and tinny and with very little low end.

I'll listen and like it, most likely, but I do love what brought me to the band in the first instance - the amount of different musical ideas. When Lanegan stopped being involved and he replaced Nick with a bunch bassists who would back up rather than add to and drive the groove they definitely lost something, but managed to keep me interested over the years. The fun machine took a **** and died around then, as did "that" Queens. This is more or less Josh solo now and that's OK, but nowhere near as engaging to me as it used to be. I guess my tastes have just changed.

First song alright but a b-side really, new song is below average. Really liked Like Clockwork from the get go really when My God... was released, the likes of I Appear Missing, I Had a Tail,Smooth Sailing were boss aswell then. 2 out of 9 for new one heard, not looking good here I'm afraid!

Just wait til yaw'll hear feet don't fail me, unreborn again, and villains of circumstance at the very least before writing the whole album off

Although I'm astounded that people think the evil has landed is only meh

Speaking of Metallica watched Avenged Sevenfold support them in 06, friend wouldn't give them the time of day with the punky outfits and vest tops...he is now like a superfan of them or some sh1t...I always remind him of this gig he has no recollection of it apparently :D

Feet Don't Fail needs to be gig opener.

I love the album, I really do, I like how they change it up style wise with nearly every release but it always sounds like QOTSA...

Can't wait for the gig now and to hear some of these live...

It'll probably take a few more listens but after one spin, it's not bad. Head Like a Haunted House is great.

They are about to go on stage at the Reading festival live on the BBC Red Button channel. One presumes several songs from the album will feature.

Overall a disappointing album. It starts strong I love the opening three tracks but once we get to Fortress it goes downhill fast and doesn't recover until Villains of circumstance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,858 ✭✭✭✭Arghus

I've listened to it through about 7 or 8 times now and I still haven't made my mind up on it. I appreciate how it sounds like a change in style, but still unmistakably like Queens of The Stone Age. I haven't grown to dislike any of the songs, but I don't truly love anything on it either.

Sometimes I like the sterile tinny guitar sounds but then two seconds later my ears can yearn for a bit of grit and heft. There always sounds to be a lot going on in each song, but I do wish there was a bit more oomphh to the mix: the drums, in particular, sound like paper on some of the tunes. I could grow to like it, possibly, time will tell. I don't mind the addition of synths. It adds a bit of spooky atmosphere and they've integrated them well into their sound: It's there, you notice it, but it doesn't overpower you; really love them on the Intro to Feet Don't Fail Me.

I'm still finding the songs surprising and interesting to listen to after a number of spins, which is a good sign. But I don't think there is anything on here that's an absolute out and out banger of a tune. I think the songwriting is not as inspired as on previous albums, but they've tried to compensate by making the songs more lengthy and complex, and stuffed with different elements and atmospherics.

Just to add I'd been listening to it on Spotify, on "extreme quality", don't cha know. Well I bought it today. And I have to say it sounds fantastic. Whatever way the audio is compressed on Spotify doesn't do justice to some of the songs. Like You Used to Do sounds tinny, trebley and flimsy, but a physical copy playing through a decent stereo is miles ahead.
