I imagine Van Dijk isn't happy with all these leaks. Eh? Eh?

Will klopp pair matip or lovren with van dijk?(tempting faith here I know) I'm aware it will be a long season but centre back pairings should be nailed down and always starting when possible.

If it's true and VVD does join Liverpool it sends out a massive message to anyone else we try to sign or staff we try to recruit that LFC mean business and that big players ect want to come here.

That in itself it worth paying the extra £10m for. You cannot buy that kind of publicity and stature for the club . Massive coup for the club should it come to pass but I won't actually believe it u too he's leaning

3 at the back next year, Salah & Mane the wing backs, league's ours bhiys

Just playing devils advocate... i'm not sure how many big superstar players around the world would look at VVD and think "oh yeah, he's a game changer, I want to play with that guy". It could equally have the effect of showing we're ripe to be taken advantage of - "if they'll pay 50m for a centre back, what'll they pay for a striker/winger/midfielder!"

Id say he's going with 3 at the back. Matip VVD and Loveren. If we do sign Virgil he'd be a definite starter considering the price being mentioned and I can't see why the club would give Loveren a large long term contract to sit on the bench.

    Indeed.
Might be a great CB etc but it's not overly exciting IMO.

On the 3 at the back .... Gomez & who as backup?

How can we agree personal terms allegedly with both salah & van d but no deals with their clubs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,151 ✭✭✭✭Osmosis Jones

I don't know why people think we'll go 3 at the back, Lovren will just move down to the bench and we'll stick to the 433.

I agree with that. Squad was threadbare at times this season. Not every player will be able to play every game so we'll need 17/18 players who can come in and out without the quality dropping

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,761 ✭✭✭redzerdrog

I really don't want to get my hopes up of signing either player but it is very encouraging. I think a pacy wide player like salah solves so many problems and in turn strengthens us in a number of positions.

I suppose it's no worse than agreeing a fee and then having to bargain with the players. I presume the clubs gave permission to talk to the players to see if there was any point in finishing agreeing a fee

It's a nice option to have though. Can is pretty good in a back three as well so there's no reason we can't at least try it if we become too predictable in our tactics like we did last season. 433 will continue to be plan A I'm sure but it's no harm to have the opportunity to switch things up when needed.

Be madness to think we could get Salah and Van Dijk done this week

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,819 ✭✭✭✭Charlie19

We played 3 at the back a few times last season. So it's not totally alien to Klopp.

He's 25 year old CB that had Man City and Chelsea after him. Chelsea is managed by Conte and just won the PL and City by Pep.

Now we're never ever going to be the club that will pay £100m for a star player - IE Mbappe, Griezman ect ect But we can from time to time pay this kind of money for a player and when he's coveted by a number of clubs and picks us, I'm sorry but that's a big deal for LFC.

And yeah you're right no one will join us because of VVD but they might just think twice if one or two others pick us over another PL club.

Goes to show the pull of a world class manager. Last time we were in champions league we couldn't attract anyone, now the sky's the limit

Mane said he chose us over utd last season.
Asked about Jose Mourinho's interest, Mane said: “Yes, it was true.

“There was interest from a lot of clubs, not just Manchester United, but as soon as I knew Liverpool were interested I just felt it was the right club with the right coach. It was right for me to come here.

There's a couple of factors to these transfers(maybe),

    1. I think FSG have finally found a manager they trust 100%, they expect him to be here for the foreseeable future and thus are backing him in the transfer market.

    2. Klopp is a big big draw, a world class manager, a likeable manager, tactician, man-manager etc which helps to attract the right players.

It will be an interesting summer as this will be Klopps first time having a mega budget to work with, it could be the catalyst that sees him mentioned in the legendary bracket of manager in years to come.

Very exciting time to be a LFC fan, i'm fully invested in Klopp and his ideas.

Sure they didn't want him anyway.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 40,061 ✭✭✭✭Harry Palmr

Salah, VVK and Keita would be a great summer by Liverpool standards even if no one else was signed or sold. Obviously adding someone like Lacazette would be better but how big would the spend be - 35m/60m/say 60 for Keita and 35m for Lacazette. That's ludicrous.

Need a Left Back as a priority.

I'd be happy if we looled at Jonas Hector.

It'll be the Hull lad Robertson I expect - a cheap option with the biggest money going down the spine

I would argue that is exactly what we have done IF* we sign VVD for north of 50mill Considering that would be a world record fee for a defender if I'm not mistaken. I just don't think it will coincide very often where the player Klopp actually wants will require a world record fee for that position. As we all know he likes to mould his own stars and therefore we won't be paying this kind of money for players very often.

*I don't believe we have signed anyone until it is confirmed by the club.

He looks a top defender no doubt but my major worry is he plays in a very compact team with 2 holding midfielders. How will he cope been exposed with free flowing attacking football in front of him.

    Really can't remember.
It all depends on how you define a transfer battle.

While manager of Liverpool, Benitez talked several players into joining the club.

2010: Raheem Sterling chose Liverpool over the big London clubs.
2007: Ryan Babel chose Liverpool over Arsenal.
2007: Mascherano turned down a move to Juventus to join Liverpool.
2004: Xabi Alonso had agreed to sign for Real Madrid before Benitez stepped in.

After Benitez was replaced, the club has more often than not missed out on 'top' transfer targets. I'd include losing Sterling to Man City as such also.

    Arsenal - Sanchez
    Chelsea - Salah, Schurrle, Willian
    Dortmund - Gotze, Mkhitaryan
    Man City - Sterling, Sane
    Man Utd - Jones, Young
Roma - Nainggolan and Pjanic both turned down the opportunity to sign for Liverpool while Rodgers was manager
    Stoke - Shaqiri
    Tottenham - Alli, Eriksen, Sigurdsson

Also he's wrong. Silva and Ederson will also be £100m odd.
And one of them is a keeper, who are the cheapest positon, generally speaking.

Buffon still holds the record for a keeper 16 years later.

I'm sure we are all a little apprehensive about the fee.

    Opportunity cost and all that.

I was led to believe it's the kind of transfer FSG wouldn't sanction.

Same fee as Suarez would be mental.

He's great in one on ones. That's the key when you play for one of the sides who have most of the possession. You must be able to defend a quick, direct counter.

    I'm not worried.
